"abstractNote": "A microwave acid digestion method prior to the determination of210Pb and210Po in sediments and soils is described. It involves an acid (HNO3, HCl, HF and H3BO3 mixture) digestion with microwave heating in closed vessels at high pressures. Analyses carried out for various reference materials showed that the results were statistically equal to certified values and reproducibility was also assured. The advantage of the microwave technique compared to the traditional leaching procedures is that the solid materials are completely dissolved and, therefore, ca. 100% efficiency is achieved in the extraction of210Po and210Pb, even though a fraction is associated to the silica net. Moreover, time of analysis is drastically reduced, as are the risks associated to vapour inhalation and material corrosion.",

"abstractNote": "The Beaufort Sea coast is well known for its strong cross-shelf physical gradients that are believed to influence the geographic range of benthic fauna, from inshore river deltas to the shallow lagoons and bays inside the linked barrier-island chain. We examined the results of a series of field studies conducted over the past decade to explore the spatial (and temporal) patterns in the distribution of estuarine fauna in relation to other biological and physicochemical parameters. Our data revealed that infaunal and epifaunal communities on deltas were relatively depauperate in species richness and abundance compared to adjacent deeper habitats. The low abundance of benthic biota at the mouths of river deltas are related to a combination of disturbances, including sediment transport, bottom fast ice, scour by deep-draft ice, and extreme temporal and spatial variations in salinity through the annual cycle. Deeper inshore areas were generally more species rich, but areas of high infaunal diversity and biomass were also associated with elevated concentrations of sediment chlorophyll a and pheopigments. However, the deltas provide an early seasonal food source for vertebrate grazers, especially the large numbers of migrating shorebirds and estuarine fishes that are the basis of a subsistence lifestyle for local natives. Stable isotopic values of the major freshwater prey species on deltas reveal their strong late spring dependence on terrestrial carbon sources. Yet, with the immigration of estuarine species to the deltas throughout the summer, a more mixed assemblage of invertebrates assimilate a combination of carbon sources derived from both marine and terrestrial sources. The seasonal evolution of river delta invertebrate fauna, from aquatic freshwater species to estuarine species, reflects the enormous resiliency and resistance of these ecosystems to profound physical and chemical gradients at the Arctic land-sea interface.",
