"abstractNote": "Satellite remote sensing at Mantinea and Elis in the Peloponnese has identified an extensive network of near-surface orthogonal streets and sections of city blocks. This new and valuable information reveals the general organization of urban space and its parameters, showing that Mantinea and Elis were planned settlements at some point in time. In presenting the evidence for buried archaeological features, the report describes the wider urban layout of each city and outlines a partial reconstruction of an orthogonal network of streets. As Peloponnesian settlements, Mantinea and Elis are considered more broadly within the traditions of Greek town planning. In particular, the report highlights the evidence for planned settlements in the Peloponnese and in doing so challenges the misconception that the region was disinclined to adopt trends in Greek town planning. Finally, an argument is made for the wider integration of satellite remote sensing applications in archaeological fieldwork projects throughout Greece, where until now they were generally lacking. "abstractNote": "In the present study the archaeological site of “Louloudies – Kitros” (N. Greece) is investigated by the use of magnetic and spectrometry geophysical methods. For this reason soil samples were collected from several trenches within the archaeological site, as well as radial traverses around kilns, which were used for glass production. Moreover, samples were collected from a long traverse, starting from the middle of the archaeological site and extending outside of the site, in order to identify the limits of the archaeological settlement. The performed measurements were successful in identifying the different occupation levels and the boundaries of the archaeological site. High values of magnetic susceptibility and iron oxide content were well correlated with the periods of intense human activity. Around the kilns, the mean values of the magnetic susceptibility indicated the effect of the fire mechanism in the surrounding area and also gave some first evidence concerning the use of the kilns. Comparison of the magnetic and chemical properties of the anthropogenic soils suggests that their enhancement may be used as an index for locating areas and features of archaeological interest.",

The latest are of significant value for the detection of buried archaeological features\nusing remote sensing techniques. The proposed transformations, re-projects the initial VNIR\nbands of the satellite image, into a new 3D coordinate system where the first component is\nthe so called “crop mark”, the second component “vegetation” and the third component\n“soil”. For the purpose of this study, a large ground spectral signature database has been\nexplored and analyzed separately for each different satellite image. The narrow band\nreflectance has been re-calculated using the Relative Spectral Response filters of each\nsensor, and then a PCA analysis was carried out. Subsequently, the first three PCA components\nwere rotated in order to enhance the detection of crop marks. Finally, all proposed\ntransformations have been successfully evaluated in different existing archaeological sites\nand some interesting crop marks have been exposed.",

"abstractNote": "Remote sensing may be used for quick and cost effective detection and monitoring of water leakages, since traditional\nfield survey methods for detection of water pipeline leakages are costly and time consuming. Vegetation indices are\nwidely used by researchers for many applications. Among them, NDVI, RVI and SAVI are indices that can be used for\npipeline leakage detection. In this study, the above vegetation indices were evaluated based on Landsat ETM+\nmultispectral images in a multi-temporal mode. The evaluation was performed in the semiarid environment in Cyprus, in\norder to detect the position of points/areas where water leakage occurs and to examine the accuracy of the vegetation\nindices in detecting such events. In addition, a low altitude system was used to record spectral differences before and\nafter a leakage event. The results showed that there are leakage points that could be detected using satellite images due to\nthe increasing and decreasing of the surrounding vegetation affected by the water leaked of the pipeline. Other\ncharacteristics such as the soil type and precipitation were also examined. Finally, the low altitude system highlighted the\nadvantages of using such non contact techniques for monitoring water leakages.",

"abstractNote": "This paper presents the results obtained from field spectroradiometric campaigns over Neolithic tells (“magoules”) located at the Thessalian region in Greece. In each one of the four archaeological sites selected, three sections were carried out using the GER 1500 handheld spectroradiometer. Spectral profiles of the sections and several vegetation indices such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Indices (NDVI) and Simple Ratio (SR) have been examined in this study. This is one of the first times that ground hyperspectral data are evaluated in such context of archaeological research for the spectral characterization of archaeological features. As it was found, ground spectroradiometric measurements can be efficiently used in order to support and validate satellite imagery results for the detection of archaeological sites.",

"abstractNote": "Satellite data can be used as a valuable tool for the detection of water pipeline leakages in semiarid areas. However the use of multi-temporal satellite images for this purpose can be problematic since reflectance values may change due to phenological changes of plants, radiometric errors during the pre-processing of satellite data, etc. It is therefore important to establish a spectral signature library with “ground truth data” for different scenarios of water leakages in a control site minimizing other potential errors. For this purpose, the GER 1500 spectroradiometer was used for measuring the reflectance values of three different targets: soil, vegetation and asphalt. The targets were saturated with a specific amount of water and then several spectroradiometric measurements were taken. The narrowband reflectance values were then re-scaled to spectral bands of Landsat 5 TM and spectral signature variations were highlighted for all targets before and after moisture level were increased. Using these data, threshold values were defined in order to be used for multispectral satellite data analysis. Specifically, this data was used for detection of water leakages in pipelines in Cyprus using Landsat 5 TM images.",

"abstractNote": "Vegetation indices have been widely used for the detection of archaeological traces, based on crop marks, during different phenological stages. Such indices can be used in order to enhance interpretation performance of multispectral and hyperspectral satellite data, for identification of buried archeological remains. Although a variety of indices exists in the literature, research is still limited and only a small group of these indices have been explored. This paper aims to highlight the prospects as well the limitations of several broadband vegetation indices for the detection of Neolithic tells in the Thessalian plain (Greece). Several multispectral Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite images have been used for evaluating the effectiveness of such indices. In addition, new developed algorithms and hyperspectral narrowband indices, specially designed for archaeological research, have been also used and compared using hyperspectral satellite data (EO-Hyperion). Indeed, the Normalized Archaeological Vegetation Index (NAVI) as well as a linear transformation of the Landsat 5 TM were applied to satellite data. The above were also compared to other processing algorithms such as Tasseled – Cap algorithm and Principal Component Analysis. The results have shown that several indices and new algorithms may be used for the enhancement of crop marks, while some no-widely used indices can be successfully used for archaeological purposes.",

"abstractNote": "Air pollutants, together with climatic parameters, are of major importance for the deterioration of cultural heritage monuments. Atmospheric pollution is widely recognized as one of the major anthropogenic threats to architectural cultural heritage, in particular when associated with water absorption phenomena. Atmospheric particle deposition on surfaces of Monuments (of cultural heritage interest) may cause an aesthetic impact induced by a series of chemical reactions. Therefore there is a need for systematic monitoring and mapping of air pollution for areas where important archaeological sites and monuments are found. Earth observation techniques, such as the use of satellite image for the retrieval of Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT), are ideal for this purpose. In this paper, all important monuments of the Paphos District, listed by the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, have been mapped using Geographical Information Systems. Several recent (2012) MODIS satellite images (both Aqua and Terra) have been used to extract the AOT values in this area. Multi-temporal analysis was performed to identify areas of high risk where AOT values are considered to be high. In situ observations have been also carried out to verify the results.",

"abstractNote": "The city of Demetriada was constructed around 294-292 BC and became a stronghold of the Macedonian navy fleet, whereas in the Roman period it experienced significant growth and blossoming. The ancient theatre of the town was constructed at the same time with the foundation of the city, without being used for 2 centuries (1st ce. BC - 1st ce. A.D.) and being completely abandoned after the 4th ce. A.D., to be used only as a quarry for extraction of building material for Christian basilicas in the area. The theatre was found in 1809 and excavations took place in various years since 1907. Geophysical approaches were exploited recently in an effort to map the subsurface of the surrounding area of the theatre and help the reconstruction works of it. Magnetic gradiometry, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electrical Resistivity Tomogrpahy (ERT) techniques were employed for mapping the area of the orchestra and the scene of the theatre, together with the area extending to the south of the theatre. A number of features were recognized by the magnetic techniques including older excavation trenches and the pilar of the stoa of the proscenium. The different occupation phases of the area have been manifested through the employment of tomographic and stratigraphic geophysical techniques like three-dimensional ERT and GPR. Architectural orthogonal structures aligned in a S-N direction have been correlated to the already excavated buildings of the ceramic workshop. The workshop seems to expand in a large section of the area which was probably constructed after the final abandonment of the theatre.",

"abstractNote": "For the seismic action estimation according to Eurocode (EC8) one has to characterize site conditions and suitably estimate soil amplification and corresponding peak ground motion for the site. For this reason, as specified, one has to define a design spectrum through the ground-type/soil-category (S), and the peak ground acceleration (PGA) of the reference return period (TNCR) for the corresponding seismic zone and for structural technical requirements chosen by the designer. Ground type is defined through geophysical/geotechnical parameters, i.e. (a) the average shear wave velocity up to 30 meters depth, (b) the Standard Penetration Test blow-count, and (c) the undrained shear strength of soil. Through the “GEO-CHARACTERIZATION” THALIS-PROJECT we combine different geophysical and geotechnical methods in order to more accurately define the ground conditions in selected sites of the Hellenic Accelerometric Network (HAN) in the area of Crete Island. More specifically in the present efforts, geological information shear wave velocity and attenuation model calculated from seismic surface geophysical measurements is used. Additionally we utilize the ground acceleration recorded through HAN from intermediate depth earthquakes in the broader area of South Aegean Sea. Using the recorded ground motion data and the procedure defined in EC8, the corresponding elastic response spectrum is calculated for selected sites. The resulting information are compared with the values defined for the corresponding EC8 spectrum for the seismic zone comprising the island of Crete. As a final outcome of this work we intend to propose regional normalized elastic spectra for seismic design of structures and urban development planning and compare them with Eurocode.",

"abstractNote": "Remote sensing may be used for quick and cost effective detection and monitoring of water leakages, since traditional field survey methods for detection of water pipeline leakages are costly and time consuming. Vegetation indices are widely used by researchers for many applications. Among them, NDVI, RVI and SAVI are indices that can be used for pipeline leakage detection. In this study, the above vegetation indices were evaluated based on Landsat ETM+ multispectral images in a multi-temporal mode. The evaluation was performed in the semiarid environment in Cyprus, in order to detect the position of points/areas where water leakage occurs and to examine the accuracy of the vegetation indices in detecting such events. In addition, a low altitude system was used to record spectral differences before and after a leakage event. The results showed that there are leakage points that could be detected using satellite images due to the increasing and decreasing of the surrounding vegetation affected by the water leaked of the pipeline. Other characteristics such as the soil type and precipitation were also examined. Finally, the low altitude system highlighted the advantages of using such non contact techniques for monitoring water leakages.",

"abstractNote": "The main purpose of the present study is to investigate the suitability of magnetic properties in correlation to geochemical measurements as a pollutionmonitoring tool and study the metal transmission factors in an area around a major local source, namely a ligniteburning power plant. Surface soil samples were collected in the wide area of the power plant of Megalopolis (Peloponnesos, Greece). The magnetic susceptibility and other magnetic properties of the surface soils were originally measured and mapped. Loci of high values of magnetic susceptibility within the study area gave rise to further analyze the soil samples for metal concentrations. GIS techniques were used for mapping all the chemical constituent concentrations and the magnetic measurements on the various topographic and geological features of the area. Maps were created through interpolation algorithms indicating the spatial distribution of the above measurements. Spatial tools and statistical analysis through the calculation of Pearson’s coefficients proved the correlation between magnetic properties, metal concentrations and the terrain attributes (especially the geological structure and the wind currents) of the region.",

"abstractNote": "Peak sanctuaries are distributed unevenly over the island of Crete. They date from the end of the Early Minoan period to the beginning of the Second Palace Period, and can be found on or close to mountain peaks. They were identified as sanctuaries because of the cult related finds that were found or excavated at their location. “The sanctuary should be seen from the region it served” and “it should ‘see’ that region”. This is only one of the many topographical characteristics defined by Alan Peatfield in his 1983 study of Minoan peak sanctuaries1. Intervisibility in between the peak sanctuaries was understood as “the expression of ritual unity that may have transcended political boundaries2”. Nowicki grouped the intervisible peak sanctuaries in three zones, connected to the physical geography of the island3. GIS is a new tool that can anchor the peak sanctuaries and their geographical data on a map, and it can be used to create a model that is capable of analyzing the location of these mountain sites, based on both environmental and cultural variables. It is therefore possible to better understand the choice of location, the use and the meaning of the peak sanctuaries in the broader Minoan cultural landscape.",

"abstractNote": "Magnetometers, multi-frequency electromagnetic induction sensors, multi-point electrical resistivity prospecting instruments and ground-penetrating radar have been employed jointly during 1992 and 1998 in Shangqiu area, northern China, an archaeologically important region of investigating the origin of Shang civilization. The study was supported as part of the collaborative projects \"Archaeological Investigation of Early Shang Civilization in China\" between Harvard University's Peabody Museum and the Institute of Archaeology, CASS. One of the most important achievements of the past years' intimate integration work of geological and geophysical team was the discovery of a buried Eastern Zhou (770-450 B.C.) city with rammed earth walls. Another joint campaign from the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (FORTH), the Technical University of Crete and the French Archaeological School of Athens has been concentrated in the geophysical mapping of archaeological remnants of the Hellenistic port of Itanos, NW Crete, since 1994. Seismic, magnetic, EM, resistivity, GPR and resistivity tomography surveys have mapped various portions of the archaeological site providing valuable information on the habitation patterns of the ancient settlement and its geomorphological setting. A joint research project that is carried out by members of the above teams from China and Greece aims towards the combination of high resolution geophysical and satellite data from Itanos. This kind of interaction brought up a number of differences in scale and similarities in research procedures that are followed in archaeological prospection. Field strategies in geophysical investigations from reconnaissance mapping to volume mapping, instruments and field procedure, data processing and interpretation, and merits and limitations of each technique are also discussed within their archaeological context, stressing the need of more comparative and joint research studies.",

"abstractNote": "The present survey aimed to image the subsurface structure, including karstic voids, and to evaluate the extent of the heterogeneities that can result in potentially dangerous collapse of road segments overlying these features. A multidisciplinary geophysical approach (seismic refraction, frequency domain electromagnetic and ground penetrating radar) in combination with a detailed geological survey indicated the presence of tectonic faults as well as velocity and conductivity anomalies along an old road within the area of Akrotiri at Chania (Crete). Due to the presence of subsurface fuel pipes, perpendicular to the direction of the road, 2D resistivity imaging was excluded from the applied geophysical methods. Interpretation of the geophysical data revealed that the section of the road investigated overlies prominent voids attributed mostly to karst features. The conductivity and velocity anomalies are interpreted to indicate an area where the host limestone rock has been downthrown by faulting and associated karstification. The continuation of this fault zone was observed in the slope of the road during later excavations. Interpretation, using geographic information systems (GIS) to integrate data, allowed these controls and relationships to be understood and monitored. The above methodology was proved successful for areas where the application of resistivity method is not possible.",

"abstractNote": "A communication system based on fire signals was identified in Crete by the field archaeologist Nikos Panagiotakis, during an archaeological survey he conducted in the Pediada region in central Crete (from 1982 to 1989), covering more than 800 sq. km. The Pediada lies between the Bronze Age palatial sites of Knossos and Malia (from west to east) and extends south and southeast of modern Heraklion. The communication system was used during the Minoan period, especially between 1900-1700 BC. It worked by means of codified fire signals sent from the top of large, man-made constructions (in the shape of a truncated cone), built on the tops of hills or ridges. The network with its interconnecting visual contact could keep a close watch over, and so control natural passes and routes, covering the whole countryside and the coasts.",

"abstractNote": "This paper aims to explore the formation of crops marks over archaeological features using remote sensing data. Crop marks are very important to archaeological research since they can reveal in an indirect way buried archaeological remains. Several researches have been able to locate subsurface relics via interpretation of multispectral and hyperspectral satellite images. However the best phenophase (time-window) where these crop marks are enhanced and which spectral bands are the most capable for this enhancement are still an open question for the scientific community. This study aims to address these fundamental aspects of Remote Sensing Archaeology. For this reason an extensive dataset was used: two control archaeological sites were constructed in two different areas of Cyprus (Alampra and Acheleia). In these areas both barley and wheat, were cultivated. In situ spectroradiometric measurements were taken over a whole phenological cycle (2001e2012) for both areas. More than 30 in situ campaigns were performed and more than 2600 ground measurements were collected. The phenological analysis of these measurements have shown that a period of only 15 days is best suitable for monitoring crop marks which is connected with one phenological stage; during the beginning of the boot stage of the crops. This period can be used in areas having similar climatic condition as Cyprus (Mediterranean region). Also as it was found, this phenological stage of crops might be also influenced by the climatic conditions of the area. The evaluation of a proposed Archaeological Index was performed at the Thessalian plain (central Greece), where several Neolithic settlements are established. The evaluation was made using both Hyperion and Landsat images. The results have shown that the proposed Archaeological Index is suitable for the enhancement of crop marks in satellite imagery.",

"abstractNote": "An integration of geophysical surveys, ground hyperspectral data, aerial photographs and high resolution satellite imagery for supporting archaeological investigations at the multi-component Vészt}o-Mágor Tell, located in the southeastern Great Hungarian Plain, is presented in this study. This is one of the first times that all these techniques have been combined and evaluated for retrieving archaeological information. Geophysical explorations, specifically magnetic gradiometry and ground penetrating radar methods, have revealed shallow linear anomalies and curvilinear rings at the Tell. The use of remote sensing images has confirmed the diverse anomalies with respect to geophysics through photointerpretation, radiometric and spatial enhancements. Moreover, several indices from ground hyperspectral data also have revealed stress vegetation anomalies. These integrated results were used to map the main areas of archaeological interest at the Vészt}o-Mágor Tell and plan future excavations. It was found that these multiscalar data can be used efficiently for detecting buried archaeological features.",
