Investigations of awareness systems for the domestic environment have suggested that such systems can help individuals stay in touch with dear friends or family and provide affective benefits to their users. Our research provides empirical evidence to refine and substantiate such suggestions. We report our experience with designing and evaluating the ASTRA awareness system, for connecting households and mobile family members. We introduce the concept of connectedness and its measurement through the Affective Benefits and Costs of communication questionnaire (ABC-Q). We inform results that testify the benefits of sharing experiences at the moment they happen without interrupting potential receivers. Finally, we document the role that lightweight, picture-based communication can play in the range of communication media available.</p>",

"abstractNote": "Most systems for promoting virtual presence are focusing on providing awareness information to one user through a personal device, being it a desktop or a mobile device. Shared displays have been lately proposed as a way to provide information, and to promote community building and socialization. Displays situated in public areas allow immersing awareness information into a wider informational and social context. In this paper we discuss the usage of shared visual displays to provide presence information to a working community sharing a common territory. (Invited paper)",

Important aspects of shared workspaces are presence and awareness information, flexible sharing of work material, and support for communication among group members. In this paper we will discuss the need for mobile shared workspaces as well as an experimental platform for ubiquitous collaboration and a number of shared workspace implementations for both formal and informal collaboration.</p>",

"abstractNote": "<p>Ubiquitous computing integrates computation into the environment, and enables users to move around and interact with computers more naturally than they currently do. This helps to address some of the traditional challenges of computer supported collaborative work (CSCW), as users are not bound to a desk and a personal computer, and are not forced to stay in a static environment where ad-hoc collaboration is impossible. UbiCollab is a platform for the support of ubiquitous collaboration, and it provides such functionality as context-awareness and automatic device discovery. The vision of UbiCollab is to be both flexible and extendible, so that it can provide ubiquitous collaboration support for many different existing and future domains and settings. A previous study has compiled a set of requirements that needs to be fulfilled in order for a platform to reach this vision. This work re-designs the architecture and the platform components of UbiCollab so that they conform to these requirements. OSGi is chosen as the underlying architecture, supporting the requirements of flexibility and extendibility, and a suitable OSGi framework for the platform is chosen. The platform components and their application programming interfaces (APIs) are designed, and a selected number of these are implemented with full or partial functionality. A testbed of applications and external services is used throughout development to test the flexibility and functionality of the platform and the completeness of the APIs.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Full text closed. "abstractNote": "UbiNomad is a contribution to the UbiCollab project, which is open source and supporting\nnatural collaboration usingmobile and ubiquitous computing technologies.\nThis project aims towards sharing your location with your friends and applications in a flawless\nway where it is integrated with your social networks sites and applications. Today we use a\nlot of different social network sites and applications that use location sharing, and the market is\nrapidly growing.\nThis work has been done as a preliminary study ahead of ourMaster Thesis. Included in this\nreport is a state of the art analysis, which led us to figure out the need of the problem domain.\nWe used scenarios to illustrate some of the leaks in the domain and used them to design the\nrequirements for the UbiNomad API. A restriction carried from the UbiCollab project is that the\nUbiNomad has to be developed for Android. One of the goals of this project is that UbiNomad\nhas to be easy to integrate with other applications. Hence we have designed some prototypes\nfor applications to use with UbiNomad.\nBased on the scenarios and prototypeswewere able to draw the outline for the requirements\nand the architecture for the UbiNomad API, both of which are subjects to change in the future.\nSince this is a preliminary study for our master thesis, we end it on the high note of what we are\ngoing to do in the spring and how we are going to evaluate our work.",

"abstractNote": "This project has been performed as a master thesis and contributes to the UbiCollab project, which is a service-oriented platformfor ubiquitous collaboration where social interactions may occur both naturally and unconstrained of situation and location.\nSocial medias have had a rapid growth throughout the last decade. People tend to share everything they do, and where they do it. With the simultaneously growth of mobile applications,\napplication developers integrate social networking services into their application to reach a greater audience. It is easy to integrate one network into their application, but when multiple\nnetworks are integrated, the code tends to become more complex. Developers usually choose only one service to keep it simple. This has the disadvantage of making users of different social\nmedias unable to share their geographical location and communicate with each other.\nDuring our work with this master, we have created a middleware that is able to share and manage geographical places across social networks, in order to make it easier for developers to make location-based applications for multiple social services.\nWith this implementation we support core features for sharing geographical places in social networks. However, the system needs to support additional features to be treated as a suitable\nalternative to existing tool.",

"abstractNote": "With the ever rising consumption of electricity in households and people becoming increasingly conscious about the environment, a market has evolved for systems that monitor power consumption. There are systems on the market that allow monitoring of devices and total usage, but none of them focus on sharing experiences with others. Awareness around, and encouragement to reduce power consumption might be aided greatly if users could share their experiences and progress on social media, like Facebook.\nThis report describes how a team of six students at NTNU, developed a solution for SINTEF Energy to resolve this problem. It includes both detailed architecture of the system, the development process, and how the team envisions further development of the system. The Android app Wattitude was developed to give users an easy platform to monitor and control their power consumption. The app also gives users the ability to create tips for saving energy, and share both these and their consumption data with their Facebook friends. A server for data synchronization was also developed.",

"abstractNote": "BACKGROUND: Fall related research is a major ⬚eld of research, and di⬚erent solutions\nemerge rapidly. Many of them are technical and focus on mobile technology. To be\nable to develop high-level applications of good quality rapidly, well-de⬚ned and wellstructured\nback-end platforms are crucial elements. There exists a gap in a well-de⬚ned\nplatform that provides back-end data-storage functionality, Such a platform will help\ndevelopers to focus on the front-end; making it easier to develop high-level applications\nquicker and of higher quality. OBJECTIVE: The major objective of this study is to\ndevelop a data-storage platform, called NoFall, to ease the development process of fall\npreventative high-level applications. This will decrease required development time and\nenable development teams to focus more on functionality and user interface. NoFall will\nbe developed for Android devices. RESEARCH METHOD: First, this thesis investigates\nthe current research in fall detection and prevention. Second, State-of-the-Art solutions\nare examined and discussed. Finally, requirement speci⬚cations are formed based on the\nproblem elaboration and usage scenarios. RESULTS: The resulting platform has shown,\nthrough the development of test applications, that this is a step in the right direction for\nthe increased quality of high-level applications targeting fall prevention. Due to the fact\nthat the result is a proof of concept, some important future improvements are identi⬚ed,\nsuch as improvement of the database, making the platform easier to use - and supporting\nmore usage scenarios.",

The\npaper highlights application domains, research focus, population, technology\nused and type of research contributions in the ⬚eld. Results show that most\ncontribution is done in the health domain, and that the research focus is on\nbehavior change and less on attitude change. "abstractNote": "BACKGROUND: Seniors, in this case 67 plus years, are the fastest\ngrowing demographic group in Norway. The people in this group have a\nhigh risk for falling, where one out of three has at least one fall incident\neach year. The fall incidents often leads to injuries and reduced quality of\nlife, and even reduced lifetime expectancy. The falls are not just making\nthe seniors suffer, a publication by the The Norwegian Directorate of\nHealth about fall prevention, stated that around 80% of all accidents\nand injuries among seniors are directly linked to fall, costing the society\nabout three billions Norwegian kroners annually. A preliminary study to\nthis thesis, conducted fall 2014, showed that exercise, more particularly\nstrength and balance exercise, can be a great intervention to prevent\nfalls. Another important finding was that none of the papers, found\nby doing a literature review, did document neither the use of any user\nacceptance tests, or any inclusion of the users in the development process.\nOBJECTIVE: The objective for this Master’s Thesis is to develop concepts\nthat would encourage physical activity, with the use of Information\nand communications technology (ICT), in order to reduce the risk for\nfalling among seniors. RESEARCH METHOD: The report starts out by\nelaborating the problem at hand, and presents several commercialized\nexercise concepts. This is followed by a systematic literature review,\naiming to illuminate the State-of-the-art (SoTA) within seniors, ICT and\ntraining. A workshop with active seniors, consisting of a focus group used\nto investigate their motivations, challenges and general thoughts about\nICT and physical activity, and a co-design session where participants\ncame up with ideas to a concept were conducted. Ideas from participants\nand results from literature review were used to develop concepts by\nmaking mockups. Our developed concepts were then evaluated by two\nexperts through semi-structured interviews. RESULTS: The conducted\nliterature review, about ICT, exercise and seniors, shows that seniors\nare not included in development processes, which also supports one of\nthe findings from the preliminary study. We also found that few of the\npapers did discuss fall as an important part of the interventions. Our\nworkshop with the seniors gave us valuable insight in the seniors everyday\nlife. Our participants were three active seniors, who reported that their\nmain motivation for doing physical activity was simply to get a better\nlife. As we also saw among the commercialized exercise applications\nand literature review, the seniors from the workshop were focusing on\nendurance exercise. We learned that they did conduct some strength\nexercise as well, but none were especially focusing on balance training.\nThe concepts that we developed can be seen as a result itself, but it also\nproved to be an excellent platform for discussing seniors with experts. We\nfound several similarities, but also some differences when we compared\nexperts’ and seniors’ opinions, especially when it comes to how they focus\non fall and what kind of activities the seniors should do to prevent fall.",

"abstractNote": "Research on persuasive technology and designs are in continuous need, and\nthere are not many conceptual models available, certainly in persuading youths\nto perform healthy behaviors. B.J. Fogg's Blue Span behavior, which states that\none perform a familiar behavior for a period of time, is accounted in a case study\nconducted on 30 youths for two months. The results were used to create a design\nguide with a conceptual model, which guides the researcher or designer on how\nto create applications for persuading youths to be physical active for a period.\nPush-ups was selected as the healthy physical behavior, and the results states that\nthe majority of the informants took daily push-ups, all the participants used the\napplication and did the behavior for two weeks, and some used the application for\ntwo months.",
