Precedent can be asset or an encumbrance to international organizations and their members, depending on their aims and on the policy area. Linking current decisions to previously-agreed ones helps to increase cohesion, facilitate consensus among members, and borrow authority – benefits that might be more necessary for some organizations than for others. To compare whether the features of norm-producing organizations correlate with their preference for jurisprudence, we compare two organs from the United Nations system: the Security Council, which produces binding decisions, and the General Assembly, which delivers soft law resolutions. We explore the citation networks formed by the approximately 20,400 resolutions adopted by each organ between 1946 and 2019 to test their differences with regards to the dynamics of citation formation, concentration of citations, and timing. Descriptive results reveal the main periods of jurisprudential activity by the Security Council and the General Assembly, but find no sizeable difference in their overall rate of precedent usage. We introduce “IO positioning” as a conceptual lens for studying patterns and shifts in IO networks resulting from negotiations between IOs over their distinctiveness and social membership in complex organizational fields. We suggest that IO positioning has two constitutive effects. First, on the level of individual IOs, positioning affects IO identities within the field as these are (re)negotiated in relations with other organizations. Secondly, the positioning practices of IOs have constitutive effects on the contours of entire policy fields too; they form and shift the boundaries of regime complexes. Empirically, the paper examines the utility of our approach by analyzing the history, dynamics, and positioning effects of interorganizational relations between eight IOs in global health governance—an area of international cooperation that is commonly portrayed as exceptionally fragmented, complex, and densely populated. Examining relations between our eight IOs, we provide network analytical longitudinal data of in- and out-reporting by IOs derived from IOs’ annual reports between 1970 and 2017. However, it is not clear to what extent these results on human behaviour are artefacts of contemporary communication technology and culture and if the fundamental patterns in communication have changed over history. This paper presents an analysis of historical epistolary metadata with the aim of comparing the underlying historical communication patterns with those of contemporary communication. Our work uses a new epistolary dataset containing metadata on over 150,000 letters sent between the 16th and 19th centuries. The analyses indicate striking resemblances between contemporary and epistolary communication network patterns, including dyadic interactions and ego-level behaviour. Certain aspects of the letter datasets are insufficient to corroborate other similarities or differences for these communication networks. What explains this proliferation? Existing studies focus on the role of major powers and polarity but fail to explain exercises without great powers or the continuous growth of MME participation. I conceptualize patterns of exercises among all members of the international system as networks. Inferential network analysis shows that higher-order effects like popularity, transitivity, and memory increase the probability that states cooperate militarily. Countries with many connections have institutional knowledge and prestige to attract partners. Multinational coalitions form where mutual friends increase trust and create positive feedback. Past cooperation lowers the costs of future partnerships. The networked society, as a social term, aims to depict communities in ongoing interactions and hence gives prominence to ties and connections between members of the society in question. To digitally visualize those links, there are innovative devices such as Gephi software. Through various algorithms, the program converts the relational database of musicians and digitally visualizes this database in many different forms. The powerful layouts offer compelling evidence of the channels of musical knowledge that were transmitted from masters to disciples as well as between musicians. Moreover, the visual depiction of musician networks would permit us to interpret the influential, isolated musicians and the interactions between the main and the sub-clusters in the whole network. This corpus consists of more than 350 different editions of textbooks used for teaching astronomy in European universities during the early modern period. Connections between the editions are based on mutual semantic knowledge and are arranged in a multiplex network of four layers, with each layer representing a different semantic relation. The modeling aims for a better understanding (and possible prediction) of the process of knowledge accumulation in the various editions. We consider semantic text-parts as knowledge units transferred between the editions, and show how these units spread using both an SI model and its modified version, the Bass model. Both models include a parameter representing the rate of transfer, which is interpreted as the mechanism underlying the process of knowledge accumulation; the Bass model has an extra parameter that represents the rate of external influence and stands out as the “resistance to adoption from” and “resistance to be influenced by” other knowledge systems. The modeling has helped us to chart the path and mechanisms of knowledge transformation in the early modern period. Networks are identified by adding further layers whose graphs express socioeconomic relationships and conditional sub-networks. The comparison between the model and these layers enables us to conclude that the accumulation of knowledge was highly dependent on the institutional embedding of scientific production because the diffusion of knowledge was mostly determined by the economic constraints of early modern printers and publishers. It further suggests that geographic proximity played a role—although secondary—in the diffusion of knowledge but only under the condition that the book producers involved were still living. Some groups became legends and survived for decades, while others vanished and are known now only to the most dedicated music history scholars. To explain and predict success, we built a complex network of the groups and their almost 20,000 members based on performers’ sharing using the data from Wikipedia and Google. We calculated the primary network measures: centralities, degree assortativity, and clustering coefficient — and discovered that they could not accurately predict music group success, but they could distinguish between coarse measures of success, such as which groups were above or below the median. In particular, all centralities positively correlate with success, and the clustering coefficient non-linearly maximizes it. Through a process of chord slicing, we obtain a representation of the score as a complex network, where every chord is a node and each progression (voice leading) links successive chords. In this paper, we use this representation to extract quantitative information about harmonic complexity from the analysis of the topology of these networks using state-of-the-art statistical mechanics techniques. Since complex networks support the communication of information by encoding the structure of allowed messages, we can quantify the information associated with locating specific addresses through the measure of the entropy of such network. In doing so, we then characterize properties of network topology, such as the degree distribution of a graph or the shortest paths between couples of nodes. Here, we report on two different evaluations of network entropy, diffusion entropy analysis (DEA) and the Kullback–Leibler divergence applied to the conditional degree matrix, and the measurements of complexity they provide, when applied to an extensive corpus of scores spanning 500 years of western classical music. We apply this method, focused on the structural distance, to three significant individuals associated with the Italian Renaissance: Copernicus, Michelangelo, and Pico della Mirandola. The results point to the effectiveness of this approach for discovering new knowledge about the interdisciplinary transactions between people and ideas coming from artistic, scientific and philosophical domains during this period. The emergent network reflects the apparently strong network-level interactions between Michelangelo and Mirandola’s clusters; the importance of Hermeticism across the three clusters; and how the so-called “knowledge dealers” related to Neoplatonism contribute to the depiction of the period by future historians. This paper aims to examine these questions via a comprehensive investigation of the writings of two prominent political and literary figures who experienced the Northern–Southern Song transition, Sun Di 孫覿 (1081–1169) and Li Gang 李綱 (1083–1140). A close examination of the letters written to senior court officials by these figures during their periods of political inactivity reveals not only these writers’ political agendas but also their attempts to exert influence in the political arena—a manifestation of the “outwardly regal” notion—via their epistolary networks. Despite the fact that Li has been highly praised while Sun has been widely condemned by posterity, the two men employed similar strategies to curry favor with senior court officials, who turned out to be potential patrons and facilitated the subsequent political rehabilitations of these two men. Sun Di’s and Li Gang’s eagerness to resume public service indicates the opportunistic motives underlying their epistolary exchanges and the ungenuine claims of disinterest in the politics expressed therein. To illustrate these two patterns, this paper focuses on the ego-network of Fayun 法雲 (?–766), a prominent Vinaya leader based in Jiangsu region, as an example of the formation and evolution of regional Buddhist communities in southern China. Degree centrality indicates that Fayun was one of the central figures in the southern Buddhist landscape of the early eighth century.
