Les installations portuaires occupent une part considérable du littoral des Bouches-du-Rhône. Cette emprise si impressionnante est pourtant relativement récente : elle s'amorce au milieu du 19e siècle, avec l'aménagement du port moderne de Marseille, pour se renforcer par vagues successives, en annexant l'étang de Berre, dans l'entre deux-guerres, puis le golfe de Fos, au début de la Ve République. Mais à chacune de ces étapes, c'est très rapidement que le percement des bassins et des darses a été suivi de l'implantation des usines ou des raffineries ; et dans le même mouvement, ont surgi de nouveaux quartiers voire des villes nouvelles. Cependant, l'industrialisation et l'urbanisation n'ont pas totalement colonisé la côte ni uniformisé le mode de vie de ses habitants : la sauvegarde des espaces naturels (la Camargue, les Calanques) paraît durablement acquise, la pêche artisanale fait encore vivre quelques petits ports et maintient l'institution originale des prud'homies de pêcheurs. Le développement de la plaisance et de la croisière augure enfin d'un nouvel équilibre entre essor économique et société de loisir.

Si les ports font illusion, c'est qu'avec eux on a l'embarras du choix. Lyrisme du chant des sirènes. Docks sinistres et bars enfumés. Amour et mélancolie. Naufrages et passions. Lieux communs à la pelle et matelots au charbon. Grand frisson garanti. Mais cet imaginaire urbain, décliné à l'envi au cinéma et dans la littérature, a du plomb dans l'aile. La crise est passée par là et, depuis plusieurs années, les villes cherchent à \"réinvestir\" leurs quartiers portuaires, les privant parfois du charme étrange qui faisait leur singularité
Paradoxalement, le port est un peu l'antithèse du voyage : c'est la ville de ceux qui restent. Mais on ne rêve jamais aussi bien qu'à quai. L'auteur propose ainsi un itinéraire à l'envers du décor, teinté d'imaginaire. Que savons-nous aujourd'hui des ports, de leur histoire et de leur fonctionnement ? Une des approches les plus fructueuses passe par l'étude des environnements portuaires. Des spécialistes français, britanniques, américains, belges, allemands et italiens nous apportent le résultat des recherches qu'ils développent depuis de longues années. Historiens, sociologues, géographes, professionnels nous livrent leurs réflexions sur ce milieu si important pour l'évolution de nos civilisations. Les exemples sont tirés de toutes les mers du globe, de San Francisco à Montevideo, d'Anvers à Gioia Tauro. Les ports français, bien représentés, s'égrènent de Dunkerque à Fos, avec une attention toute particulière pour la Basse-Seine (Le Havre, Rouen, Honfleur, Dives,...) et la Bretagne. Mais l'ouvrage va au-delà des études de cas puisque l'une de ses originalités est de regrouper plusieurs articles marqués par la dimension comparative. Dans une première partie, les auteurs examinent les représentations et la culture des ports. Dans la deuxième, des réalités plus matérielles, telles que les espaces, les aménagements et les règlements occupent le premier plan. La troisième partie enfin, la plus longue, est dédiée à la foule des métiers de la mer : marins, manutentionnaires, pêcheurs, pilotes et surtout dockers. Ces derniers sont étudiés par des chercheurs qui ont consacré des années d'études à ce milieu complexe et fascinant.
