This study examined the use of critical incidents as a tool for reflection employed by teacher candidates during their clinical teaching semester. All participants were required to write weekly reflections using either a traditional journaling format (N=10) or an on-line weblogging format (N=10). Two independent readers analyzed the narratives and collaborated to reach censuses using open and axial coding to determine key phrases and words and to assign themes. The quantitative method used to analyze reflection entries was a Two-way ANOVA design. The results indicated a significant difference between the reflections of those who weblogged and the reflections of those who wrote in traditional journals. Participants who wrote in journals wrote complex investigative reflections of classroom events. Participants who wrote using weblogs wrote less complex descriptions of classroom events. In addition, participants who wrote using the weblogs generated questions about how to solve instructional issues more so than those who participated in the traditional journaling format. The rationale for such an endeavour is fourfold. First, it directs attention to the neglected territory of methodology which is essential for researcher reflexivity. Second, it shows that most research in social work education has been situated within the positivist or interpretivist paradigms, and the relative dearth of studies in the critical paradigm raises important questions about anti-oppressive practice in research. Third, a comparison of studies in different spheres of professional education indicates that research into social work education has often not been as rich or robust as research into medicine or teaching, and this deserves further reflection. Seeking an alternative approach, academic developers designed a four-stage Collaborative Scholarship Model where they provided individualised SoTL mentoring to academics implementing a teaching innovation. Project outcomes included sustained change to teaching, openness to new ideas, scholarly contributions and peer recognition (through awards, publications or invited presentations). This model had a sustained impact on participants’ teaching and increased research productivity. To achieve this, specialised training, based on an understanding of disciplinary communication practices and appropriate assessment methods, is needed. However, there is a lack of reliable assessment instruments which are designed to assess profession-specific communication skills and to strengthen students’ reflective skills. This study evaluated the reliability and consistency of teacher evaluations based on developed criteria, and tested the suitability of the criteria as a tool for reflecting on one’s behaviour in pharmacy. The main findings suggest that professionally tailored criteria offer a reliable framework for assessing discipline-specific communication skills and for improving students’ learning. On the basis of a reflective interpretive analysis, this paper seeks to investigate how concepts developed by Wilfred Bion offer a framework for the making sense of thinking, learning and experiencing that took place within a reflective practice space developed by the group. Utilising Bion’s concept of parallel conscious and unconscious group processes that lead to the accumulation of both knowledge and non-knowledge within groups, the argument is made that group affiliation offers a powerful explanation of the situated nature of seemingly individualized thinking, learning and knowing. The research focused on the social construction of reflection within a post-registration, palliative care programme, accessed by nurses, in the United Kingdom (UK). Through an interpretive ethnographic approach, the organisational, contextual and cultural issues impacting upon teaching and learning interactions, and the use of reflection therein were explored with student and nurse educator participants. Data were collected from observations of teaching and learning, interviews, and extracts from programme documentation and reflective learning contracts (RLCs). Findings contribute new empirical knowledge regarding the process of teaching and learning about reflection, including educator and clinical supervisor facilitation, the emotional work involved in reflection and methods of ‘mapping’ and ‘modelling’ to support reflection. The influence of both higher education and practice partner organisations on the use of reflection is also evident and indicates that professional reflective education requires institutional support from both education and practice. Specific findings in this paper are pertinent and transferable to other disciplines, where reflective education is used to develop being critical in order to learn through experience.
