processes of memory and the storage of things that had been seen, trying to draw a link between how American realism was written and the science of the day. There is a lot done on reflexes and how they were automatic. At the end point, there is a discussion of how Twain felt that his writing happened automatically and how such processes might have made for a transition between narrator (or other) subject positions in realism.\n\nThis is useful for chapter one in that it talks about how the nervous system was understood in terms that were developed for the telegraph. However, there is nothing in here on trauma, so those parallels will have to be drawn through a sort of extrapolation/new historical move.
