Now -- with the recent opening of the Russian Military Historical Archive -- scholars may now fully explore Russia's part in these crucial events.
\n
This collection from the Military History section (Voenno-Uchenyy Arkhiv/VUA) contains the rich core of the Archive's holdings on the Napoleonic era. It enables scholars to research this subject without the need for long stays in Moscow, with all the uncertainties that are an inevitable aspect of working in the under-funded and periodically closed Russian archives.
\n
The VUA collection contains a huge mass of documents, mostly military but also political and diplomatic. It includes the official and private correspondence of the Emperor Alexander, of the Minister of War, and of the key generals. This correspondence features the official battle and campaign reports of units of varying size, from corps to regiments, but it also offers more ephemeral correspondence between Russian commanders, allowing scholars to trace how operations developed through Russian eyes and without the benefit of hindsight.
\n
This collection also provides intelligence reports from before and after the 1812 campaign. It has a number of key position papers on logistics and requisitioning, on fortification of Russia's borders, on the topography of various regions in which the army fought, and on Russian grand strategy and campaign plans at various moments in the struggle against Napoleonic France.
\n
Included in the archive is also a mass of day-to-day correspondence on the crucial questions of how the army was recruited, trained, fed and supplied before and during campaigns, which sometimes took regiments thousands of miles from their bases. There are documents on the raising of the militia and on partisan activity in 1812, as well as on the creation, training and movement of the Reserve Army, which moved through Poland and eastern Germany in 1813 and played a vital role when it arrived on the decisive battlefield of Leipzig in 1813. Until now, the ways in which Russian troops in Central and Western Europe were supplied and financed in 1813-14 were unknown to historians, who will now be able to answer this question authoritatively using the great mass of documents on this issue in this collection.
\n
Within this archive there are a number of individual smaller collections, including those made by General Mikhailovsky-Danilevsky for his histories and by the General Staff itself for the anniversary celebrations and publications in 1912. These collections often include unpublished memoirs and notes of participants in the wars, which are of great value. They contribute to a collection of immense richness, undoubtedly the world's largest and -- until now -- barely touched source of new materials on the Napoleonic era.
\n
92 reels
",

Tsarism's humiliation on the Pacific was the first in a series of convulsions that would ultimately topple the Romanov dynasty. And the confrontation in Manchuria, with its enormous land battles involving the use of trenches, artillery barrages, and machine gun fire, heralded many of the murderous innovations of World War I. For these reasons, the conflict that pitted Eurasia's largest land empire against the rising East Asian power is one of the pivotal events of the twentieth century.
\n
Contemporaries in the West paid a great deal of attention to the Russo-Japanese War; journalists, military attachés and others wrote scores of books about the dramatic events in the East that enjoyed a wide readership in the immediate aftermath of the conflict. Yet with the outbreak of the Great War less than ten years later, interest in the confrontation slowed to a trickle. And it remained a backwater of military history for much of the previous century. While Russians continued to study the war, much of what they published was heavily distorted by political imperatives, especially during the Soviet era.
\n
The approaching centenary of the Russo-Japanese War and the increasing attention paid to conflicts outside of Europe is reviving interest worldwide in this historical landmark. Until very recently those studying Russia's role have had to rely on secondary accounts, most of which are either dated or tainted by propaganda. But with the easing of restrictions on scholarship the most important primary source -- the rich archive of the tsarist army itself -- have become accessible.
\n
And now the holdings of Military History section, the crown jewel of the tsarist army's archives of the Japanese War, have been microfilmed. Scholars who are unable to undertake a lengthy stay in Moscow or may be reluctant to hazard periodic closures and the other difficulties of research in Russia can therefore conduct research by consulting this valuable source at their home institution.
\n
In the wake of Russia's defeat against Japan, the Military History section (Voenno-Uchenyi Arkhiv or VUA) gathered a mass of documents to provide the primary source base for the General Staff's official multi-volume history of the war. Although the focus is on the military, the collection also contains much important material dealing with politics and international relations, as well as the Trans-Siberian Railway.
\n
The Military History section's holdings are immense and cover virtually every aspect of the tsarist army's role in the Russo-Japanese War. Here scholars can study intelligence reports and war plans, commanders' reports to Tsar Nicholas II about the Japanese Navy¿s surprise attack on Port Arthur, the base's lengthy siege, the major land battles in Manchuria, and the Baltic Fleet's annihilation at Tsushima. The collection also preserves the orders, dispatches, and official correspondence of the senior generals in the field. And the daily logs kept by the staffs of armies, divisions and brigades also provide a wealth of detail about operations in the field.
\n
As a conflict involving over a hundred thousand troops fighting some 8,000 kilometers from the imperial capital, the war's logistical challenges were immense. The Military History section also holds records about the railways, road transport and provisioning in the field. Material about fortifications and operations in the rear are also included.
\n
Another major challenge to the tsarist armies in the East was morale. The political turmoil that ravaged the imperial capital and the countryside in 1905 was paralleled on the front by railway and telegraph worker strikes, revolutionary agitation, mutinies, and an armed rising in the Siberian city of Chita. These events are also well represented in the collection. It even preserves a valuable set of radical woodblock prints (lubki) and St Petersburg newspaper clippings about the unpopular war.
\n
In short, this microfilm collection will prove to be the basic primary source about Russia's role in its war against Japan outside of the archive in Moscow. It will be of tremendous importance to scholars of Russian and East Asian history, as well as the military and international relations.
\n
170 reels
",

Danilov
Senior Research Scholar, Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Russian History and Moscow Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences (Intercenter)
\n
From 1917 to 1929 statistical observation in the Soviet Union was undertaken by the Russian zemstvo--local councils of self-government dating from the mid-19th century. Late 19th and early 20th century Russia had a predominantly peasant population and zemstvo statistics dealt mostly with the peasant farm and its productive and social evolution.
\n
In the pre-Soviet period, Russia underwent profound social development both in urban and rural areas, and it was during these years before the revolution that statisticians began to consider taking yearly surveys of rural villages. Such surveys would obtain a picture of the actual dynamics of social development in the countryside. In addition, they would enable statisticians to observe and identify the factors causing and the scope of the changes taking place in rural Russia. These surveys--the dynamic censuses--were undertaken during the 1920s.
\n
The new regime was presented with a unique opportunity as a result of transforming zemstvo statistics--those compiled by local organizations--into Soviet State statistics. In 1918, the Soviet Republic Central Statistical Administration was set up, and agricultural statistics were compiled by four departments: agricultural production and current information, land-use statistics, agricultural censuses, and agricultural dynamics. A. I. Khryashcheva, whose earlier work on yearly surveys of peasant farms is particularly notable, headed the agricultural censuses and dynamics departments from 1919 to 1926.
\n
In 1919 and 1920 statistical data on dynamics programs began to be collected. The practical identification of rural \"clusters\" or micro districts that is, a group of small villages, a large village or sometimes an entire township was started during the peasant farm censuses of 1919 and 1920. From 1920 onward, special materials on dynamic clusters were deposited in the Central Statistical Administration.
\n
In 1921 and 1922 famine and heavy population migration inevitably affected the dynamic cluster surveys. The years 1923 through 1926 saw a great deal of valuable statistical data collected as more and more cluster surveys were conducted; during this period, many farms were surveyed within the clusters. For example, 591,000 farms were surveyed in 1925; 590,000 in 1926; and 614,000 in 1927, when clusters were identified. The dynamic surveys during these years became annual censuses of 3% of peasant farms.
\n
The files, all in the original Cyrillic, contain the following information for the years 1920-1924 and 1926 (the documents of 1925 have not been found) together with selected information from 1927, 1928 and 1929:
\n

\n
\n
Raw census data such as household cards, community forms and land commune forms
\n
\n
\n
Summary tables and tapes
\n
\n

\n
A household form filled out on both sides provides three to four pages of typewritten information. Typically a completed form runs to six or seven pages and a summary table constitutes 10 to 12 pages of information. A wide range of geographic areas -- provinces, republics, and districts -- is covered by the censuses.
\n
The materials of both the 1927 and 1929 dynamic censuses are of particular interest. Shortly before they were undertaken, there was a change in leadership at the Central Statistical Administration Office, notably in the dynamic censuses department. V. S. Nemchinov was placed in charge and made responsible for introducing a more Marxist footing to the peasant farm censuses, with the aim of identifying class structures within the rural population.
\n
The archival documentation offers clear examples of how this was accomplished. Previous dynamic censuses had grouped peasant farms by physical indicators, such as size of sown areas and total head of draft animals. These indicators were replaced by groupings, which indicated the means of production employed. In addition, a detailed description of interfarm relationships provides further insight into the social development of the Russian countryside. Charts are available that indicate the regions of the country included in the surveys, the number of files for each region and the total number of pages in the files.
\n
This publication offers an unprecedented opportunity for scholars in social and economic history, political science and sociology, demography and geography to study the social development of the early Soviet period.
\n
The Russian Peasantry on the Eve of Collectivization:
The Dynamic (Cluster) Censuses of Peasant Farms, 1920-1929: 278 reels
\n
1920 (26 reels)
\n
1921 (37 reels)
\n
1922 (29 reels)
\n
1923 (36 reels)
\n
1924(35 reels)
\n
1926 (19 reels)
\n
1927 (72 reels)
\n
1928 (10 reels)
\n
1929 (13 reels)
\n
Index (1 reel)
\n

",
