"abstractNote": "Pressure ulcers frequently occur in patients with limited mobility, for example, people with advanced age and patients wearing casts or prostheses. Mobile information communication technologies can help implement ulcer care protocols and the monitoring of patients with high risk, thus preventing or improving these conditions. This article presents a mobile pressure ulcer monitoring platform (mULCER), which helps control a patient's ulcer status during all stages of treatment. Beside its stand-alone version, it can be integrated with electronic health record systems as mULCER synchronizes ulcer data with any electronic health record system using HL7 standards. It serves as a tool to integrate nursing care among hospital departments and institutions. mULCER was experimented with in different mobile devices such as LG Optimus One P500, Samsung Galaxy Tab, HTC Magic, Samsung Galaxy S, and Samsung Galaxy i5700, taking into account the user's experience of different screen sizes and processing characteristics.",

"abstractNote": "Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder in which drug dosing regimens become increasingly complicated with the progression of the disease. This poses a significant risk of nonadherence to drug dosing and a failure in treatment response. We hypothesized that a medication reminder delivered by short message service (SMS) could be one way to ameliorate the problem of medication errors. We conducted an open feasibility study in 50 patients with advanced PD. The subjects set up the process to receive reminders by a Web tool, after which they started to receive automatically transmitted text messages as a medication reminder for 4 weeks. In total, 35 of 50 subjects (70.0%) were able to set up the reminder system without any help. The majority (69%) of the subjects rated the set-up process as very easy or easy. Almost all (41 subjects, 91%) felt that SMS reminders worked well for them, and only 4 subjects (9%) felt that SMS texts were totally valueless. Almost half of the subjects (22 of 45, 49%) considered that there were clear benefits, and an additional 17 subjects (38%) enjoyed some benefits in using the medication reminder system. Our results indicate that an SMS medication reminder system is a feasible method, even in subjects with advanced PD.",

With the rapid increase of mobile phone subscribers, text messaging has the potential to be used for evaluation of population health interventions in rural China. Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the feasibility of using text messaging as a data collection tool to monitor an infant feeding intervention program. Methods: Participants were caregivers of children aged 0 to 23 months in rural China who participated in an infant feeding health education program. We used the test-retest method. First, we collected data with a text messaging survey and then with a face-to-face survey for 2 periods of 3 days. We compared the response rate, data agreement, costs, and participants' acceptability of the two methods. Also, we interviewed participants to explore their reasons for not responding to the text messages and the reasons for disagreement in the two methods. In addition, we evaluated the most appropriate time during the day for sending text messages. Results: We included 258 participants; 99 (38.4%) participated in the text messaging survey and 177 (68.6%) in the face-to-face survey. Compared with the face-to-face survey, the text messaging survey had much lower response rates to at least one question (38.4% vs 68.6%) and to all 7 questions (27.9% vs 67.4%) with moderate data agreement (most kappa values between .5 and .75, the intraclass correlation coefficients between .53 to .72). Participants who took part in both surveys gave the same acceptability rating for both methods (median 4.0 for both on a 5-point scale, 1=disliked very much and 5=liked very much). The costs per questionnaire for the text messaging method were much lower than the costs for the face-to-face method: (sic)19.7 (US $3.13) versus (sic)33.9 (US $5.39) for all questionnaires, and (sic)27.1 (US $4.31) versus (sic)34.4 (US $5.47) for completed questionnaires. The main reasons for not replying were that participants did not receive text messages, they were too busy to reply, or they did not see text messages in time. The main reasons for disagreement in responses were that participants forgot their answers in the text messaging survey and that they changed their minds. We found that participants were more likely to reply to text messages immediately during 2 time periods: 8 AM to 3 PM and 8 PM to 9 PM. Conclusions: The text messaging method had reasonable data agreement and low cost, but a low response rate. Further research is needed to evaluate effectiveness of measures that can increase the response rate, especially in collecting longitudinal data by text messaging.",

This paper explores an innovative mobile approach for patient safety and health care services in a Taiwan hospital, where a web-based patient safety services (PSS) system was implemented to enhance the efficiency of diagnosis and patient safety. The functions and operating procedures of the PSS system are introduced. Furthermore, the contributions of the PSS system over a six-month period of clinical use are analyzed. Finally, the managerial implications of mobile PSS are discussed. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.",

"abstractNote": "The objective of this research is to investigate the role of user attitude toward the activity supported by a mobile health application in the overall technology acceptance equation. For that, a perceived risk-motivation theoretical model integrating user attitude on quitting smoking was developed and tested empirically with 170 participants from the UK for the context of using cell phones to support smoking cessation interventions. Results show an attitude favourable to quitting smoking has a negative effect on the perceived risk, no significant effect on the motivation, and a small positive influence on the behavioural intention associated with using the mobile health service. Overall, having a positive a priori attitude toward a healthy activity is not a sufficient reason to make users accept a mobile service supporting that activity.",

"abstractNote": "M-health is an emerging area of research and one of the key challenges in future research in this area is medical video streaming over wireless channels. Contrasting requirements of almost lossless compression and low available bandwidth have to be tackled in medical quality video streaming in ultrasound and radiology applications. On one side, compression techniques need to be conservative, in order to avoid removing perceptively important information; on the other side, error resilience and correction should be provided, with the constraint of a limited bandwidth. A quality-driven, network-aware approach for joint source and channel coding based on a controller structure specifically designed for enhanced video streaming in a robotic teleultrasonography system is presented. The designed application based on robotic teleultrasonography is described and the proposed method is simulated in a wireless environment in two different scenarios; the video quality improvement achievable through the proposed scheme in such an application is remarkable, resulting in a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) improvement of more than 4 dB in both scenarios.",

"abstractNote": "Human activity recognition with wearable body sensors receives lots of attentions in both research and industrial communities due to the significant role in ubiquitous and mobile health monitoring. One of the most concerned issues related to this wearable technology is that the sensor signals significantly depends on where the sensors are worn on the human body. Existing research work either extracts location information from the activity signals or takes advantage of the sensor location information as a priori information to achieve better activity recognition performance. In this paper, we present a sparse signal-based approach to corecognize human activity and sensor location in a single framework. Therefore, the wearable sensor is not necessarily constrained to fixed body position and the deployment is much easier although the recognition difficulty becomes much more challenging. To validate the effectiveness of our approach, we run a pilot study in the lab, which includes 14 human activities and seven on-body locations to recognize. The experimental results show that our approach achieves an 87.72% classification accuracy (the mean of precision and recall), which outperforms classical classification methods.",

"abstractNote": "Background: The Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT) Disability Hospital program transportMYpatient was launched in 2009 to address transport costs, which are a major barrier to patients accessing CCBRT health services. The initiative uses mobile phone technology to transfer funds to cover transport costs. Methods: Data were reviewed for fistula patients using the transportMYpatient scheme in 2011, noting region of referral. Average costs of using the scheme were calculated and the location of \"ambassadors\" by region was recorded. Results: Between 2005 and 2009, CCBRT repaired approximately 170 fistulas annually, increasing to 286 in 2010 and 339 in 2011. In 2011, the transportMYpatient initiative transported 166 fistula patients from almost all regions in Tanzania, accounting for 49% of total repairs. Conclusion: The increase in referrals to CCBRT during 2011 as a result of the transportMYpatient program shows that transport costs are a real barrier to accessing care. Analysis of geographic referral data informs outreach and community sensitization initiatives, concentrating on regions of low referral. The use of mobile phone technology to transfer funds represents an innovative means of overcoming a major barrier to healthcare access for patients in low-income countries. "abstractNote": "Objective The use of mobile phones can improve and strengthen (preventive) health care in low- and middle-income countries. We aimed to retrospectively assess the response patterns of participants in free SMS health education quizzes in Uganda. Methods Study participants were employees of two companies and their community networks. We investigated how quickly individuals responded to quiz question(s) and assessed possible influencing factors. Cox regression and anova analyses were used. Results Fifty percentage of responders answered within 50min. The response chance declined with every additional day after sending an incentive via SMS (Hazard Ratio 0.993, CI 95% 0.9810.984). Quiz topics influenced both participation rates and response time. Response time was shortest for questions on HIV and sexual behaviour. Response rates were high for HIV (79%) and malaria (78.4%), but only 37.4% for demographic topics. Network providers had a substantial effect on response behaviour. Conclusion Interactive SMS programs are a fast method to reach the target population and incentives increase response rates. The most important factor influencing response time and participation rate is the network provider. Future research should focus on developing evidence-based guidelines for the design, implementation and evaluation of SMS-based interventions. "abstractNote": "Aims Limited published studies have examined patient characteristics and disease patterns served by mobile clinics in remote areas post natural disaster. By comparing users of a remote mountainous stationary clinic and a mobile helicopter outreach clinic in Neelam Valley, 4 months post Pakistan-Kashmir earthquake, this study aims to: (i) compare the demographic and disease profile of health service users, (ii) examine how acute and chronic disease patterns vary with clinical settings, and (iii) discuss the potential implications to mobile emergency clinical service planning acute phase of natural disaster in remote areas. Methods Cross-sectional, retrospective record-based study in two remote clinical settings in Neelam Valley, Kashmir-Pakistan. Patients who presented to clinics from 21 January to 20 February, and whose diagnoses were available, were included in the study. Descriptive statistics and v 2 significance tests were conducted. Results Different users and disease profiles were found between mobile and stationary clinics. While older age, female sex, living further way from clinics, earthquake-related trauma, wound and gastrointestinal infections were found to be more significantly associated with mobile clinic users, stationary clinics patients tended to be younger, living closer to the clinic site, and disease profiles were predominantly chronic in nature. Conclusion In addition to the provision of acute and chronic medical clinical service, mobile clinics operating during post acute emergency phase of natural disaster in remote areas should be sex sensitive, with highly trained and experienced staff as well as the capacity to provide trauma care. "abstractNote": "The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of a smartphone-based application developed for photographic-based goniometry, DrGoniometer (DrG), by comparing its measurement of the knee joint angle with that made by a universal goniometer (UG). Joint goniometry is a common mode of clinical assessment used in many disciplines, in particular in rehabilitation. One validated method is photographic-based goniometry, but the procedure is usually complex: the image has to be downloaded from the camera to a computer and then edited using dedicated software. This disadvantage may be overcome by the new generation of mobile phones (smartphones) that have computer-like functionality and an integrated digital camera. This validation study was carried out under two different controlled conditions: (i) with the participant to measure in a fixed position and (ii) with a battery of pictures to assess. In the first part, four raters performed repeated measurements with DrG and UG at different knee joint angles. Then, 10 other raters measured the knee at different flexion angles ranging 20-145 degrees on a battery of 35 pictures taken in a clinical setting. The results showed that inter-rater and intra-rater correlations were always more than 0.958. Agreement with the UG showed a width of 18.2 degrees [95% limits of agreement (LoA)= -7.5/ + 10.7 degrees] and 14.1 degrees (LoA = -6.6/ + 7.5 degrees). In conclusion, DrG seems to be a reliable method for measuring knee joint angle. This mHealth application can be an alternative/additional method of goniometry, easier to use than other photographic-based goniometric assessments. Further studies are required to assess its reliability for the measurement of other joints.",
