"abstractNote": "Tangible interaction shows promise to significantly enhance computer-mediated support for activities such as learning, problem solving, and design. However, tangible user interfaces are currently considered challenging to design and build. Designers and developers of these interfaces encounter several conceptual, methodological, and technical difficulties. Among others, these challenges include: the lack of appropriate interaction abstractions, the shortcomings of current user interface software tools to address continuous and parallel interactions, as well as the excessive effort required to integrate novel input and output technologies. To address these challenges, we propose a specification paradigm for designing and implementing Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs), that enables TUI developers to specify the structure and behavior of a tangible user interface using high-level constructs which abstract away implementation details. An important benefit of this approach, which is based on User Interface Description Language (UIDL) research, is that these specifications could be automatically or semi-automatically converted into concrete TUI implementations. In addition, such specifications could serve as a common ground for investigating both design and implementation concerns by TUI developers from different disciplines. Thus, the primary contribution of this article is a high-level UIDL that provides developers from different disciplines means for effectively specifying, discussing, and programming a broad range of tangible user interfaces. There are three distinct elements to this contribution: a visual specification technique that is based on Statecharts and Petri nets, an XML-compliant language that extends this visual specification technique, as well as a proof-of-concept prototype of a Tangible User Interface Management System (TUIMS) that semi-automatically translates high-level specifications into a program controlling specific target technologies.",

"abstractNote": "ActiveCube is a novel user interface which allows intuitive interaction with computers. ActiveCube allows users to construct and interact with Three Dimensional (3D) environments using physical cubes equipped with input/output devices. Spatial, temporal and functional consistency is always maintained between the physical object and its corresponding representation in the computer. In this paper we detail the design and implementation of our system. We describe the method we used to realize flexible 3D modeling by controlling the recognition signals of each face in each cube. We also explain how we integrated additional multimodal interaction options by a number of sophisticated I/O devices and by the inclusion of a second microprocessor in our cubes. We argue that ActiveCube, with its current real-time multimodal and spatial capabilities, is ready to enable a large range of interactive entertainment applications that were impossible to realize before.",

"abstractNote": "This paper outlines Siftables, a novel platform that applies\ntechnology and methodology from wireless sensor networks\nto tangible user interfaces in order to yield new possibili-\nties for human-computer interaction. Siftables are compact\ndevices with sensing, graphical display, and wireless com-\nmunication. They can be physically manipulated as a group\nto interact with digital information and media. We discuss\nthe unique affordances that a sensor network user interface\n(SNUI) such as Siftables provides, as well as the resulting\ndirectness between the physical interface and the data being\nmanipulated. We conclude with a description of some ge-\nstural language primitives that we are currently prototyping\nwith Siftables.",

"abstractNote": "This paper presents “\nToyVision\n”\n:\na\nsoftware toolkit\ndeveloped to facilitate the implementation of tangible\ngames in visual-based tabletop devices. Compared to other\ntoolkits for tabletops which offer very limited and tag-\ncentered tangible possibilities, ToyVision provides\ndesigners with tools for modeling and implementing\ninnovative tangible playing pieces with a high level of\nabstraction from the hardware. For this purpose, a new\nabstraction layer (the Widget layer) has been included in an\nalready existing tabletop framework (ReacTIVision),\nproviding the host application with high processed data\nabout each playing piece involved in the game\n.\nTo support\nthe framework application, a Graphic Assistant tool enables\nthe designer to visually model all the playing pieces into\ntangible tokens that can be tracked and controlled by the\nframework software. As a practical example, the complete\nprocess of prototyping a tangible game is described",

To address this\nproblem, we present a taxonomy, which uses\nmetaphor\nand\nembodiment\nas its two axes. This 2D space treats\ntangibility as a spectrum rather than a binary quantity.\nThe further from the origin, the more ‘‘tangible’’ a sys-\ntem is. We show that this spectrum-based taxonomy\noffers multiple advantages. It unifies previous categori-\nzations and definitions, integrates the notion of ‘‘calm\ncomputing,’’ reveals a previously un-noticed trend in the\nfield, and suggests design principles appropriate for\ndifferent areas of the spectrum",

"abstractNote": "Tangible user interfaces (TUIs) are often compared to graphical user interfaces (GUIs). However, the existing literature is unable to demonstrate clear advantages for either interface, as empirical studies yielded different findings, sometimes even contradicting ones. The current study set out to conduct an in-depth analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of both interfaces, based on a comparison between similar TUI and GUI versions of a modeling and simulation system called ''FlowBlocks''. Results showed most users preferred the TUI version over the GUI version. This is a surprising finding, considering both versions were equivalent in regard to most performance parameters, and the TUI version was even perceived as inferior to the GUI version in regard to usability. Interviews with users revealed this preference stemmed from high levels of stimulation and enjoyment, derived from three TUI properties: physical interaction, rich feedback, and high levels of realism. Potential underlying mechanisms for these findings and practical implications are discussed.",

"abstractNote": "Transition research investigates processes of fundamental change in societal subsystems, such as a transition to a low-emission mobility system. Much of transition research uses abstract frameworks to structure narratives. An understanding of the underlying mechanisms generating transitions is however required for purposefully influencing transitions (to sustainability). Such mechanisms comprise constellations of actors, technologies, institutions and their interactions leading to a specific type of phenomenon and refer to more confined social phenomena than transitions. This paper introduces the PSM (Phenomenon of interest, Specification and operationalization, Mechanism) approach to embed mechanisms describing particular dynamics of interest within the broader picture of an overall transition. The PSM approach uses three steps to bridge abstraction levels: 1) identify a phenomenon of interest in a specific phase of a transition and on or across levels of the multi-level perspective, 2) specify and operationalize the phenomenon of interest, and 3) identify mechanisms which are (partial) explanations of the phenomenon of interest. The PSM approach is considered useful to bridge levels of abstractions between which policy development must navigate, to empirically ground discussions around abstract frameworks and to transfer insights on relevant mechanisms between cases. An illustrative example from the mobility field is given.",

In this paper, we present Beyond, an interface for 3-D design where users can directly manipulate digital media with physically retractable tools and hand gestures. When pushed onto the screen, these tools physically collapse and project themselves onto the screen, letting users perceive as if they were inserting the tools into the digital space beyond the screen. The aim of Beyond is to make the digital 3-D design process straightforward, and more accessible to general users by extending physical affordances to the digital space beyond the computer screen.",

The aim of the first one is to support computer aided design (CAD) parts assembly operations in the mechanical product domain. The aim of the second one is mainly designed to help stakeholders during the task of validation of subsoil model in the field of geosciences. In this paper, we propose a design methodology of the tangible parts (also called props) based on our previous experiences in TUI development. This methodology is mainly based on multidisciplinary work and user tests and we assume that this process is reproducible.",

"abstractNote": "This paper introduces a paradigm for describing and specifying tangible user interfaces (TUIs). The proposed Token and Constraints (TAC) paradigm captures the core components of TUIs while addressing many of the conceptual challenges unique to building these interfaces. The paradigm enables the description of a broad range of TUIs by providing a common set of constructs. Thus, the TAC paradigm lays the foundation for a high-level description language and a software toolkit for TUIs. We evaluate the proposed paradigm by testing its ability to specify a wide variety of existing TUIs.",

"abstractNote": "Rope-based games such as jump rope, tug-of-war, and kite-flying promote physical activity and social interaction among people of all ages and especially in children during the development of their coordination skills and physical fitness. Our RopePlus system builds on those traditional games by enabling players to participate remotely through interacting with ropes that connect physical and virtual spaces. The RopePlus platform is centered around the rope as a tangible interface with various hardware extensions to allow for multiple playing modes. In this paper, we present two games that have been implemented in detail: a kite-flying game called Multi-Fly and a jump-rope game called Multi-Jump. Our work aims to expand tangible interface gaming to real time social playing environments.",

"abstractNote": "For Oriented by the teaching philosophy-“game based learning”, this paper carried out an in-depth research on the interactive mode of children's educational toys. In the research process, it attempted to build a new immersed educational-game scenario for children by using the new interactive technology so as to inspire the children's interest in learning and exploration. The research object in this paper was an interactive educational toy-“funny tap” English learning machine for children. After integrating the design concept of this product from an industrial design perspective, we selected specific interactive technology and completed the engineering. Moreover, we have conducted tests of work principles and effect of usage based on the sample machine. The final result indicated that there is a promising and huge market potential to apply the new interactive technology to development of educational toys.",

"abstractNote": "Distributed, tangible, collaborative applications involve potentially complex interactions of users, computing platforms, and physical artifacts. Realizing the necessary connections for these interactions can create hardware and software dependencies early in development, resulting in a system that is difficult to adapt to design changes. The Ensemble architecture is designed to encourage exploratory development of these systems by limiting the impact of changing components. Ensemble is a product of the exploratory design process it supports, evolving through use in two distinct application domains. The experience gained from these implementations has shaped Ensemble's structure and design priorities, resulting in a component-based architecture that includes: (i) an application framework and graphical user interface support; (ii) a service framework, including service publication and discovery; (iii) local and remote event handling; (iv) distributed user and resource coordination; and (v) a structured configuration language shared by all Ensemble components.",

"abstractNote": "Conceptual work on tangible interfaces has focused primarily on the production of descriptive frameworks. While this work has been successful in mapping out a space of technical possibilities and providing a terminology to ground discussion, it provides little guidance on the cognitive or social effects of using one type of interface or another. In this paper we look at the area of learning with tangible interfaces, suggesting that more empirically grounded research is needed to guide development. We provide an analytic framework of six perspectives, which describes latent trends and assumptions that might be used to motivate and guide this work, and makes links with existing research in cognitive science and education.",

"abstractNote": "The results of a study of two computer games, that use human movement as direct input, were analysed using four existing frameworks and approaches, drawn from different disciplines that relate to interaction and movement. This enabled the exploration of the relationships between bodily actions and the corresponding responses from technology. Interaction analysis, two design frameworks and Laban movement analysis were chosen for their ability to provide different perspectives on human movement in interaction design. Each framework and approach provided a different, yet still useful, perspective to inform the design of movement-based interaction. Each allowed us to examine the interaction between the player and the game technology in quite distinctive ways. Each contributed insights that the others did not.",
