Abstract | ‘Sectarianism’ has been frequently used by politicians, activists, journalists and even some academics to explain causes and dynamics of the Syrian uprising and the subse- quent civil war. However, this state of affairs contrasts sharply with the kinds of symbols and rhetoric used by the predominantly peaceful protesters who took to the streets in Syria in 2011. Drawing on interpretivist approach and thick-description, this article traces how local and supralocal activists' reactions to the regime's violence and its master narrative culminated in the activation and politicisation of the category of ‘sect’ as a residual sociality. I argue that the increasing visibility of sectarian frameworks and the demobilisation of non-sectarian actors were parts of boundary-making strategies pursued by local and supralocal actors who capitalised on regime violence and regional sec- tarian framing and sought to have a monopoly over the symbolic representation of the uprising. The effectiveness of the sectarianisation process was contingent on the esca- lation of violence, the militarisation and internationalisation of the uprising, and the transnationalisation of sectarian networks. Taking Syria as a case study, this article demonstrates how conflicts, or violence, become ‘ethnic’ or ‘sectarian-coded’ and how macro social phenomenon influences microlevel behaviour, perspectives and strategies of boundary making. |

Abstract | This thesis considers the effects of nationalism on the autonomy of intellectuals in Egypt. I argue that nationalism limits intellectuals’ ability to challenge social hierarchies, political authority and economic inequality, and that it has been more readily used to legitimise new forms of domination in competition with old ones. I analyse similarities between religion and nationalism, using the sociological theory of Pierre Bourdieu together with cognitive linguistics. Focusing mainly on the similarities between priests and nationalist intellectuals, and secondarily between prophets and charismatic nationalist political leaders, I show that nationalism and religion are based on relatively similar concepts, which lend themselves to similar strategies for gaining credibility, recognition and moral authority. I present case studies of a few nationalist intellectuals, focusing on ones who advocated views that later became dominant. The translator and teacher Rifāʿa Rāfiʿ al-Ṭahṭāwī, who was trained as a religious scholar before studying secular subjects in France, brought nationalism to Egypt by blending European nationalist concepts with centuries-old concepts from Islamic religious and literary traditions. In the early 20th century, the nationalism of intellectuals such as Muḥammad Ḥusayn Haykal enabled them to compete with men of religion for prestige and political influence, and also served particular class and professional interests. Tawfīq al-Ḥakīm’s concept of the charismatic national leader influenced the young Gamal Abdel Nasser, who became a successful nationalist prophet and military autocrat. Iḥsān ʿAbd al-Quddūs articulated the concept of the nationalist martyr, who 3 dies for his country; this concept also contributed to Nasser’s charisma. Both al-Ḥakīm and al-Quddūs arguably lost autonomy under Nasser’s regime. Al-Ḥakīm was unable to criticise the regime until after Nasser’s death. Al-Quddūs was imprisoned and tortured for advocating democracy, then became one of the most fervent supporters of Nasser’s autocracy. |

Abstract | The ongoing Syrian war has presented media and communications scholarship with a unique opportunity through which to investigate the evolving role of user-generated content (UGC) in war reporting, and the implications for the evolving relationship between professional journalists and citizen journalists. With the unparalleled amount of UGC produced in Syria and disseminated via YouTube and other social media platforms, this study will question whether the unfiltered nature in which this conflict has been mediated can allow for a more cosmopolitan journalism, by introducing the voice of the Syrian citizen-as-witness, into mainstream media coverage. Through in-depth interviews with eight British journalists from mainstream media institutions who have been working with Syrian citizen journalists, this study will question the manner in which ordinary witnessing is incorporated into Western mainstream media coverage, the effect that UGC has had on how British journalists cover the conflict, and finally if the convergence of UGC into Western media can provide the basis for a more cosmopolitan journalism. Thematic analysis of interviews will demonstrate that Syrian citizen journalists are subjected to gatekeeping practices that involve the use of third party actors, such as NGOs and British citizen journalists to filter and vet sources, limiting the potential for the voices of citizen journalists to gain authority over the media narrative. Ultimately, analysis will conclude that the potential for cosmopolitanism through media witnessing is bounded by professional journalists’ hesitancy to trust Syrian witness testimonies, and therefore maintaining their role as the arbiters of truth in the global media sphere. |
