An illustrated study of SHA's design of the Writing With Light House in Eastern Long Island, New York. The design of this linear wooden beach house was inspired by the site's close proximity to the studio of the painter Jackson Pollock; several free-form designs were based on the 1949 painting Seven in Eight. Notable features of the design include a wooden balloon frame construction that is comparable to the strip wood sand dune fencing along the ocean, a double-level living room around which several rooms are arranged, and a pool suspended over a garage.",

An illustrated study of SHA's winning entry in the competition to design the Bloch Building, a new addition to the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. The expansion of the museum fuses architecture with landscape to create an experiential architecture that unfolds for visitors as it is perceived through each individual's movement through space and time. The new building is distinguished by five light-gathering glass lenses, traversing from the existing building through the sculpture park to form new spaces and angles of vision.",

An illustrated study of SHA's design of the Nail Collector's House in Essex, New York. An illustrated study of the winning entry in the competition to design the Cité du Surf et de l'Océan in Biarritz, France, by SHA in collaboration with Solange Fabião. "abstractNote": "Part of a special issue on the work of American architectural practice Steven Holl Architects (SHA). An illustrated study of SHA's design of the new School of Art and Art History at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. The building is a formless, hybrid structure with implied rather than actual volumes outlined in the spatial layout, where flat or curved planes are slotted together or assembled with hinged sections. As a working and flexible teaching instrument, the building connects interior functions within a central spatial overlap that acts as a “social condenser” where ongoing work can be observed. A rich architectural language is achieved through the inventive use and combination of basic elements, such as fluorescent lighting tubes hidden by metal beams or the merging of painted ducts with the steel structure.",

An illustrated study of SHA's entry in the competition to design the Sun Slice House in Lake Garda, Italy. Notable features of the design include a north facade made of glass with views of the lake, a building geometry based on simple cubic volumes (to emphasize the bends and changes in sunlight), wind-protected patios on either side of the house, and an interior of white plaster with terrazzo floors on the ground level and bamboo floors on the second.",

An illustrated study of SHA's design of the new Higgins Hall Center Section at the Pratt Institute, New York. This new urban intersection takes the form of a glass structure situated between two historic landmarked buildings. A misalignment between floor plates of the north and south wings was drawn into the new glass section, creating a “dissonant zone” that marks the new entry to the school. The glass center is supported on six precast concrete columns.",
