            "abstractNote": "In this paper we explore how 'ability' is currently conceptualised in physical education and with what effects for different groups of young people. We interrogate approaches to theorising ability in physical education that draw on sociological and phenomenological 'foundations' together with notions of ability as 'physical' and 'cultural capital' drawn from the work of Bourdieu. We also look to data we and others have collected across a number of empirical projects to ask: where do we find talk about what we might identify as 'ability' in the context of physical education and sport; how is it talked about? And in what ways might this further our thinking of the meaning of 'ability' in physical education and school based sport? Our findings suggest that physical ability is far from a neutral concept and that how it is understood has important consequences for young people in relation to gender, race and social class. We argue that ongoing discussions around what we mean by ability, how we use it, and in relation to whom, are crucial in physical education where organised sport, recreation and exercise remain privileged over other constituents of physical culture.",

            "abstractNote": "The purpose of this research was to explore support for Native American sports\nnicknames. A survey of students at the University of North Dakota, a school\nwith substantial Native student enrollment, was conducted to determine support\nor opposition to the school’s “Fighting Sioux” nickname and logo. A majority\nof Native American and a minority of White students thought that the nickname\nconveyed disrespect and argued for change. Although the study was situated\nwithin Bonilla-Silva’s theory of “new racism,” the results indicated that a frame\nof color-blind racism provided an inadequate explanation of attitudes toward\nthese nicknames.",

            "abstractNote": "In this article, we examine the complex relationship between whiteness and men's U.S. distance running. Through a critical examination of over 700 print and electronic sources dealing with distance running in the U.S. from the 1970s through the present, we present evidence that distance running has been framed as a “White space” that is threatened by both external factors (dominance of male international distance-running competition by athletes from African nations) and internal factors (lack of U.S. White male success in conjunction with the success of U.S. citizens of color, born within and outside of the U.S.). We also examine several forms of backlash against these perceived threats, including the media focus on a succession of next White hopes, the rise of U.S. only prize money in road races, and the marginalization of African-born U.S. runners. Our analysis reveals how the media works to normalize whiteness within the larger narrative of U.S. distance running and suggests the need for future work on whiteness and sport.",

            "abstractNote": "U.K. sprint coaches' employment of common racial stereotypes in explaining the success of Black and White sprinters was studied. It was hypothesized that Black success would be attributed to innate genetic factors, whereas White success would be attributed to socioeconomic advantages, intelligence, and hard work. Thirty-one sprint coaches participated in success attribution exercises. Quantitative results revealed that Black and White photograph conditions were generally scored similarly in relation to stereotypical factors. However, qualitative results indicated some stereotype replication and susceptibility to natural ability stereotypes due to an overemphasis on biological determinism, and modest recognition of less immediately apparent developmental factors. Although reassuring evidence was gained that U.K. sprint coaches do not widely employ stereotypes in attributing differently the success of Black and White athletes, there was sufficient evidence to necessitate continued vigilance. A theoretical model of stereotype influences in sprinting and recommendations for both coaching and coach education are presented.",

            "abstractNote": "This essay, in struggling to account for the twisted intersections of sport and race across the US-Mexico border, argues that the cultural critic must account for not only hybridity and transnational flows of labor and capital but also for structures of feeling and structures of interaction. In this framework, basketball reveals a postmodern emotional self for the indigenous Mexican that is at once gendered, racialized, resistant and complicit, flexible, and strategic. Examining the pleasures of basketball for indigenous Mexicans in both Mexico and Los Angeles, the author asserts that while playing this game with so much passion, the players are devising their own sets of racial and ethnic premises, authoring, as it were, their own theories of difference and identity.",

            "abstractNote": "The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the nature and status of four African American male athletes' educational experiences as participants in a big-time college football program at a predominantly white institution of higher education (PWIHE) in the United States of America. A focus group and individual interviews revealed that although these African American males felt that they derived certain tangible and intangible benefits from being participants in this football program, the term `student-athlete' was an inaccurate description of who they are, especially given the expectations and tremendous time demands their participation in football related activities placed on them. These general findings are discussed in terms of their implications for future research in college sport.",

            "abstractNote": "Sport management scholars must begin to recognize the significance of race and ethnicity as viable epistemological considerations in research inquiry. This article discusses the concept of \"epistemological racism\" (Scheurich & Young, 1997) and argues that critical race theory (CRT) is a legitimate epistemological and theoretical alternative to research approaches that have typically been based on the dominant worldview (i.e., Eurocentrism), and that it is an appropriate framework for conducting race-based emancipatory research in sport management. In particular, because CRT focuses on issues of justice, liberation, and the empowerment of people of color in a society based on White supremacy (i.e., Eurocentrism), the primary purpose of this article is to provide sport management scholars and students with insight into how CRT's epistemological and methodological bases could be applied to critical areas of research in our field. The article concludes with some practical suggestions for how we can address epistemological racism in our sport management research and education.",

            "abstractNote": "The pejorative use of Aboriginal imagery in professional and amateur sport has been criticized by Native Americans, public activists and academics from various disciplinary backgrounds. They have campaigned successfully to convince sport organizations to rid themselves of such slanderous signification. While sensitive to these activist and academic strategies such perspectives do not seriously take into account that many First Nations peoples and sport teams in Canada display these images in a variety of ways. The proliferation of these images in First Nations contexts motivated me to examine the issue of Native American sport imagery further, in particular how their use by First Nations peoples may problematize standard oppositional discourse that dominates academic literature on the subject. Through my interaction with these context specific uses of such imagery, I have come to formulate a reading that encourages the proliferation of these images, a call for their saturation in the sport and fashion industry. It is only then that their signifying potential of a reality that never was can be erased, giving way to new systems of meanings.",

            "abstractNote": "In 2007 Penn State basketball coach Rene Portland retired shortly after a confidential settlement ended a discrimination lawsuit brought by former player Jennifer Harris against Portland and Penn State. Because of Portland's infamous policy of not allowing lesbians on her team, her departure was celebrated as a victory against homophobia in sports. Yet although Harris's claims of sexual orientation discrimination were validated in the media, her allegations of racial discrimination were ignored or dismissed as implausible. In this article, we examine the omission of race from the discourse surrounding this case and suggest that both legal and cultural factors contribute to society's tendency to ignore the intersecting discrimination in sport and the multiplicity of identity.",

            "abstractNote": "Despite a lack of supporting empirical evidence, the belief that sport participation can be used to address a wide range of social problems remains popular. In this study we explored ways in which the social-integration value of sport participation was constructed by participants in an Amsterdam soccer tournament created to enhance integration. We used a critical discourse analytical perspective to analyze survey, interview, and ethnographic data. We found that the construction of the socially integrative values of this event created a space in which participants could construct its effects to reflect their own interests. The resulting practices seemed to do little to challenge problematic dominant discourses and social relations.",

            "abstractNote": "Very little has been written about Lennox Lewis, an athlete who won the Olympic gold medal for Canada in 1988 but who was widely hailed as Britain's boxing savior when he unified various world titles in 1999. This article begins to address some of the gaps in our knowledge by placing Lewis alongside intellectual debates arising from Paul Gilroy's work on a Black Atlantic. It argues that some of the major themes of Gilroy's work--nationalism, double (or poly) consciousness, Americocentricity, and Black masculinity--are extremely useful tools for us to plot Lewis's career and to contend that a brief description of his career reminds us of the Canadian gaps in Gilroy's attempt to chart Black identities that are not just African, American, British, or Caribbean.",

            "abstractNote": "This essay offers one response to recent calls for leisure studies scholars to more effectively integrate race into their analyses. Drawing from interdisciplinary scholarship ship ethnic studies. Cultural studies, and gender/women's studies the article initiates a broader dialogue about the possibilities and dangers of analyzing whiteness within leisure contexts. The article outlines several studies that demonstrate ways in which whiteness operates to advantage white hegemony. It suggests how the concepts of power evasiveness, normalization and intersectionality might be applied to leisure settings and concludes with a discussion of some problems associated with the study of whiteness. The ultimate aim of the essay is to provoke further dialogue as a step toward documenting and overturning inequitable social arrangements in the movement toward justice.",

The divisions laid bare by the Bryant case involve long histories of discursive contests waged by social movements and state actors over the meanings of categories of race and gender. I argue that these struggles have influenced public understandings of history; that contemporary understandings of race, gender, and crime are very much indebted to rhetorical battles fought long ago; and that invocations of collective memory can help to determine how various audiences make sense of public dramas unfolding in the mass media.",

            "abstractNote": "Amid a backlash against the influence of hip-hop within professional basketball, exacerbated by the 2004 brawl at the Palace of Auburn Hills, NBA executives, media pundits, and fans have denounced the influx of Black high school players. This article argues that the establishment of a policy preventing high school players from the NBA is neither a pure business decision nor a hypocritical move by a league that has long profited off the contributions of young Black males and the popularity of hip-hop. Instead, it links this discourse to the larger societal moves to police and put Black male bodies under surveillance. It specifically examines the ways in which calls for an age restriction within the NBA and those efforts to send young men and women of color into America's expanding prison system reflect the same White supremacist logic that necessitates the control, regulation, and punishment of Black and brown bodies.",

            "abstractNote": "In this essay I analyse the cultural politics of the white masculinities constructed in new millennium American sport films. Specifically, I situate the production and consumption of these films in a historical conjuncture marked by an alleged crisis of masculinity for American men and the revitalization of a new conservatism in the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11 2001. Produced within this social milieu, several new millennium American sport films offer narratives featuring white everymen experiencing various crises where sport provides a masculinizing solution to their anxieties (at least momentarily). Thus, I illuminate four representational strategies common in a number of these films in order to read new millennium sport films as key cultural sites disseminating and popularizing a set of conservative ideologies and logics about gender, race and class, whose effect, if not intent, is the re-centring of white masculinity in post-9/11 American culture and, by extension, refortifying white male privilege in American society.             "abstractNote": "The U.S. Supreme Court's decision in the Brown v. Board of Education case was used as a point of reference to elaborate on the often divergent realities in education and sport for Black and White Americans. The impetus to integrate sport and the movement to integrate educational institutions in America were two separate yet often paralleled phenomena. It is typically argued that efforts to integrate educational institutions were about ensuring equitable access and opportunity. Less so, due to moral principles, integration in sports was more about winning and generating revenue. Still today, race-related divergences are reflected in education and sport. The intent of this article is to reflect on America's education and sport histories (then) and highlight some present-day realities (now) as associated with the social construct of race, particularly for Black male students and athletes.",

            "abstractNote": "This study reports on a search for racial disparities in the value of baseball cards for Black and White members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame (HOF). The study's sample of 51 players was derived from the population of the 96players elected to the HOF since 1936 by the Baseball Writers of America. Although the authors found that race produced no statistical difference in Black and White players' card values, they did observe that players' career performance plus the availability of a player's card (scarcity) exerted a significant effect on the value of cards. The study concludes with a discussion of possible interpretations of these findings.",

            "abstractNote": "Learning communities are defined as linked courses that encourage integration of the curriculum, help students establish academic and social support networks, and bring the faculty together to collaborate in meaningful ways. The purpose of this article is to describe a learning community based on two linked courses with an African American popular culture theme. The design, function, and process of this learning community are described, and results of focus group evaluations are delineated. In addition, the learning community concept's application to African American students is considered. Specifically this learning community focused on race, hip-hop, and sport. The high visibility of African American athletes and entertainers has spawned a phenomenon in the African American community, the United States, and the world that merit careful study.",

            "abstractNote": "This article is a study of an Aboriginal men's sport team in an Australian regional community and their experiences with non-Aboriginal teams and their players. The data were drawn from interviews and conversations with the players of the Ballarat Wanderers men's basketball team and the analysis is grounded in the inferential racism work of Hall (1995). Investigation of the Wanderers revealed that participation provided the players an uncommon opportunity to participate in an Aboriginal team of players, coaches, and managers. The findings, however, indicate that even though the Wanderers achieved some success as a social, political, and sporting group, they do so in an environment which is inferentially racist.",

            "abstractNote": "This essay offers a broad introduction to the representation of black athletic bodies in film. It explores how black athletes, from Jack Johnson to Jackie Robinson, from Muhammad Ali to Tiger Woods and Cathy Freeman, are depicted - and speak for themselves - in their encounters with the media. The focus of this essay, however, is on the 1996 docu-drama When We Were Kings. It offers a critique of Muhammad Ali's standing as a figure of the global black struggle by juxtaposing Ali's outspokenness in the USA with his too often unremarked-upon reticence in the post-colonial world. This essay explains how Gast's When We Were Kings plays Ali off against his opponent in the 'Rumble in the Jungle', George Foreman, while simultaneously denying both boxers the right to speak for themselves in a documentary first screened some two decades after the original event.             "abstractNote": "Sport and representations of sport in the media are key sites for political and social struggles around race and nation. In order to explore how meanings of race are constructed in a sporting context, we undertook a discourse analysis of Australian print media coverage of two incidents of alleged racial vilification in sport. In one, Australian cricketer Darren Lehmann was suspended for racially vilifying the Sri Lankan team. In the other, Pakistani cricketer Rashid Latif was accused of racially vilifying an Australian cricketer. Our research suggests the following: first, there was strong condemnation of racial vilification; second, despite this, print media representations reflect a white versus black divide in world cricket; third, a Lehmann as victim/reverse racism theme emerged. We conclude that race is being mobilized as a potent but contested symbol of both inclusion and exclusion within Australia.",
