After reading about conservation in chapter 28, I decided it was important to include an article about another scientists effort to conserve the giant panda's environment. Giant Pandas are on the nationa list of endangered species, among many others, and because of their enourmous size and land requirements, their protective can give assistance to the protection of other species. I feel the scientists in this article takes the same approach I would if I were conserving their environment by enriching their environment and providing a detailed analysis of how. It also saddens me that many species, such as this one, are on the brink of extinction because of human activities. We used five different enrichment items, each selected because of the different behavioural opportunities they promoted: (1) manipulable plastic objects; (2) a burlap sack full of straw; (3) spruce branches; (4) a fruitcicle (apples frozen in a large ice block); and (5) a puzzle feeder. Each subject received each of the five items on three occasions, for a total of 15 enrichment sessions over the course of the 2.5-month study period. Each enrichment session was paired with a control session in which no enrichment was present. Pandas spent significantly more time active, and displayed a greater variety of object- and nonobject-directed behaviours when enrichment was present. We also found a statistically significant reduction in the rate of and percentage of time engaged in the performance of stereotypic behaviour and behaviours indicative of feeding anticipation. This effect was maintained even when pandas were not interacting directly with an enrichment item, suggesting that enrichment had a motivational carry-over effect in the aftermath of interactions with enrichment items. These results are consistent with the ethological needs model of motivation in that opportunities to perform more natural behaviour appeared to improve motivational indices of well-being. The pandas remained responsive to enrichment across the 15 trials, providing no evidence for habituation or cross-habituation. Age proved to be an important determinant of responsiveness; for example, adults, but not subadults, displayed a significant preference for feeding enrichment. Our reading about estuaries fascinated me. This article discusses eelgrass in both the Chincoteague and Chesapeake estuaries, which has been dying off. Losing such autotrophs affects the nutrient cycle, which has a negative chain reaction for many other species.

In describing aquatic ecosystems, I was fascinated about information regarding realiezd and fundamental niche of cattails. I felt that a reference article for this type of concent would be pertenant to our class. These models were then used to predict the probability of occurrence of these species in selected elevation ranges when water levels were raised in 1985 either 0, 30 or 60 cm above the long-term normal water level. These realized-niche models were calculated using elevation and species data collected in 1980. After having been eliminated by two years of deep flooding, the emergent vegetation in this complex had been re-established during a drawdown beginning in either 1983 or 1984. Our hypothesis was that from 1985 to 1989 the frequencies of occurrence of species in selected elevation ranges would converge to their probabilities predicted from the 1980 logistic models. This was not borne out by our results. Actual frequencies and predicted probabilities of occurrence of a species were similar at best less than 40 % and then mostly in the control (0 cm) treatment. The realized-niche models were not adequate to predict the distribution of emergents after an increase in water level in the short term because the emergent species did not migrate upslope. I felt this article was interesting in referencing intrasexual competition in reference to humans. It goes into detail about how men and women compete against those of the same sex for mates, much like other mammals in the wild. The evolutionary model assumes that what is attractive to males is not youth, per se, but features related to fertility. This perspective leads to a hypothesis concerning the development of age preferences among adolescents: teenage males should violate the normative pattern shown in adult males and express interest in females older than themselves. 209 teenagers (103 males, 106 females) ranging in age from 12 to 19 were surveyed regarding the age limits they would find acceptable in a dating partner, as well as the age of a dating partner they would find ideally attractive. Although teenage males were willing to date girls slightly younger than themselves, they indicated a much wider range of acceptability above their own ages, and also reported that their ideally attractive partners would be several years older than themselves. Preferences of teenage females were similar in pattern to those of adult females, ranging, on average, from their own age to several years older.
