As they are demonstrably not part of the printing process, they have not attracted the attention of textual editors; but as this article shows, neither are they markers of ownership that would interest scholars researching provenance. The presence of these stamps suggests that Magnes and Bentley served not only as publishers and booksellers, but as distributors of the playbooks they produced. In The Specter of the Archive, Nicholas Popper shows that earlier eras had to grapple with the same problem—how to deal with too much information at their fingertips. Termed nova cantica, this repertoire was characterized by novel approaches to form, poetry, and melody which, although chiefly a Latin tradition, also characterize a smaller number of vernacular songs composed during the same period. Linking Latin and vernacular nova cantica, a subset of multilingual songs also exists that foregrounds novel relationships between languages and music in the nova cantica tradition. I argue that the cross-fertilization of Latin and vernacular languages signals both the literary and cultural backdrop of the twelfth century, as well as the desire of poet-composers to explore the expressive potential of language. This article considers how the use of more than one language fostered opportunities to exploit language rhetorically, compositionally, and sonically and to construct ties to the cultural and linguistic milieux within which the songs were produced. Two case studies united by a shared devotional subject, Saint Nicholas, offer a comparative perspective: Exultemus et letemur, a Latin/Anglo-Norman song transmitted in a twelfth-century English manuscript, and Nicholaus hodie, a Latin/Picard French song in a late twelfth-century theological miscellany copied in northern France. This article draws on the records of merchants, naturalists, diplomats, and showmen to examine the forces that rendered the world’s tallest animal a commodity. Tracing three American attempts to transport the giraffe – through British India, the Cape of Good Hope, and North Africa – it highlights the central role of imperial networks, Indigenous knowledge, and the slave trade in early zoological collecting. The edition is based on an extensive collation of variant readings\nfrom indirect sources – the Septuagint, the PeshiĴa, the works of St. Jerome (the Vulgate and the\nCommentary), and the Targum – as well as from direct sources such as the Qumran fragments\nand Hebrew medieval manuscripts\nThe ultimate goal of the edition is (a) to reproduce the earliest textual form, the Archetype, that\ncan be reconstructed on the basis of the available evidence; and (b) to propose a rehabilitation of\nthe Original of the Author by resorting, when necessary, to conjectural emendation. We date the\nArchetype to the II century BCE, corresponding to the date of Hebrew fragments from Qumran,\nwhile we place the Original between the V and III centuries BCE.\nUnlike previous critical editions of Qohelet, ours follows the so-called eclectic model, which involves the reconstitution of a critical text and the preparation of a critical apparatus of secondary\nvariants. Our edition includes, moreover, new data, taken both from primary literature, such as\nthe recently published GöĴingen Septuagint, and from up-to-date studies and critical commentaries on the text of Qohelet.\nThe work is made up of five main parts: an introduction, which sets forth the rationale of the edition and the methodology adopted; the collation, where the variants are listed in their original\nlanguage; the ctitical commentary, where the variants are extensively discussed; the critical text\naccompained by the apparatus, which presents a selection of authentic Hebrew variants taken\nfrom the collation; and finally, a translation of the critical text.\nThe edition uses the mark-up language of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI).
