Life-cycle cost analysis is used. The results are presented in terms of the cost added to electricity stored and discharged, in US dollar per kilowatt hour. Results are compared with wholesale and retail electricity costs and with the cost of conventional pumped hydro storage.",

"abstractNote": "This article proposes a methodology to calculate the upper boundary of the revenue available from the\nstorage and time-shifting of electrical energy. The inputs to the mathematical model are a discrete timeseries of the market index prices over a particular period of interest, and also specific energy storage\ndevice parameters. By using a Monte Carlo based optimisation method, the upper boundary of the\nrevenue from time-shifting energy is determined. The method is explained and validated by showing\nthat it finds the optimum solution that is the upper boundary for time-shifting revenue. In other words,\na storage operator could never derive more revenue than this value from time-shifting alone and\ncalculating this upper-boundary gives a reference value to compare the efficacy of other methods of\nestimation. The user defined storage device parameters include: fixed efficiencies for charging and\ndischarging (%), the maximum capacity of the storage device (kWh), the charging and discharging\npower limits (kW), and the inclusion of an additional time-dependent efficiency that models the selfdischarge of storage devices (% loss per hour). The combination of these parameters enables this\nmethod to give an objective comparison between different storage devices in terms of maximum\narbitrage revenue. The output of the model provides not only a single value of the upper boundary\nrevenue, but also the corresponding charging/discharging schedule.⬚⬚",

"abstractNote": "Energy requirements continue increasing as the industrialisation spreads and the standards of living rise. Most of the world's power consumption is still generated from fossil fuels combustion which despite of its advanced development has only a maximum efficiency of about 50%, generates almost 35% of the greenhouse emissions, as well as becoming expensive and insecure with the recent instability of oil prices. Renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, micro-hydro, wave, geo-thermal, and biomass are potential solutions for clean energy problem, but still challenges exist. Britain's target to reduce carbon emissions by 32% by 2020 through producing up to 34% of electricity and 15% of all energy from renewables cannot be met unless the contribution of such intermittent energy sources becomes more effective. Storing energy harnessed from renewables using energy storage technologies allows integration of such intermittent weather dependent energy sources while balancing the grid. Hydrogen Energy storage technology is proposed here to enable the UK to utilise its vast, but intermittent renewable energy resources with increased reliance. The objective within this study is to evaluate this process which represents genuine energy carbon neutrality. Energy capacity and economic viability assessment of an existing wind/hydrogen energy system operating in conjunction with the grid is provided here as a case study.",

"abstractNote": "This exploratory investigation examined energy storage technologies that can potentially\nenhance the operation of wind power and other intermittent renewable energy systems. We\nconducted economic and environmental analyses of\nfour energy storage options: (1) lead acid\nbatteries, (2) zinc bromine (flow) batteries, (3)\na hydrogen electrolyzer\nand fuel cell storage\nsystem, and (4) a hydrogen storage option wher\ne the hydrogen was used for fueling hydrogen-\npowered vehicles. These were considered under two wind penetration scenarios (2010 and\n2020) at four California sites that are likely to\nexperience significant wind farm development.\nAnalysis with NREL’s HOMER model showed that, in most cases, energy storage systems were\nnot well utilized until higher levels of wind pe\nnetration were modeled (i.e., 18% penetration in\nSouthern California in 2020). In our scenarios,\nhydrogen storage became more cost-effective\nthan battery storage at higher levels of wind\npower production, and using the hydrogen to\nrefuel vehicles was more economically attractive\nthan reconverting the hy\ndrogen to electricity.\nThe overall value proposition for energy storag\ne used in conjunction with intermittent\nrenewable power sources depends on multiple fa\nctors. Our initial qualitative assessment found\nthe various energy storage systems to be environm\nentally benign, except for emissions from the\nmanufacture of some battery materials.",

"abstractNote": "With the growing concern regarding climate change, the integration of renewable electric technologies into the grid has taken on increased importance over the past decade. In particular, the integration of wind energy is increasing the attention paid to power transmission investment planning, generation adequacy, and secure system operation. This attention calls for the development of new tools that can simultaneously address the economics, transmission, ancillary services, and reserve requirements associated with wind energy. This paper proposes a method to choose the optimal plan for expanding both transmission and generation systems while considering resource variability of wind energy. Considered wind plants are connected to a storage system comprising an electrolyzer, a hydrogen tank, and a fuel cell. The method minimizes total cost, i.e., the sum of the construction cost and the operation cost, to fulfill expected load. Due to the nature of transmission expansion planning and the economies of scale associated with conventional power plants, finding the expansion plan is an integer programming problem solved by a branch and bound method. The proposed method is tested by applying it to modified Garver 6-bus test system and 24-bus IEEE Reliability Test System.",

"abstractNote": "The widespread use of renewable energy sources is hindered by their intermittent and unpredictable nature. This problem can be overcome with a storage system which manages the time mismatch between energy production and load requirements.\n\nThe aim of this work is to develop a simulation tool for evaluating energy and economic performance of renewable energy islands, including various electricity generation technologies (photovoltaic modules, wind turbines and micro-hydroelectric plants), integrated with a hydrogen storage system, comprising an electrolyzer, a hydrogen storage tank and a fuel cell. After a brief description of the simulation tool structure, the attention is focused on energy and economic models of system components. Then an innovative approach for optimizing the energy island is proposed; it is based on a hybrid genetic-simulated annealing algorithm and aims to minimize the unit cost of electricity. Finally a generation island that provides electricity and hydrogen to a farm in central Italy is designed and optimized, comparing configurations based on different renewable technologies.",

"abstractNote": "Wind and solar power generation is growing quickly around the world, mainly to mitigate some of the negative environmental impacts of the electricity sector. However, the variability of these renewable sources of electricity poses technical and economical challenges when integrated on a large scale. Energy storage is being widely regarded as one of the potential solutions to deal with the variations of variable renewable electricity sources (VRES). This paper presents an up-to-date review of the state of technology, installations and some challenges of electrical energy storage (EES) systems. It particularly focuses on the applicability, advantages and disadvantages of various EES technologies for large-scale VRES integration. This survey paper indicates that each challenge imposed by VRES requires a different set of EES characteristics to address the issue, and that there is no single EES technology that consistently outperforms the others in various applications. This paper also discusses external factors, such as mineral availability and geographic limitations, that may affect the success of the widespread implementation of EES technologies.",
