Historically, the monitoring of this landslide has been conducted using different types of techniques and disconnected investigations leading to protracted analysis and project knowledge attrition. The extreme sizes of these landslides have made stabilization measures prohibitive and few options exist for mitigation. Although significant field investigations were completed on these landslides after the 1986 and 1987 movements, these studies have not been updated. This study presents an integrated investigation platform that supports continued kinematic monitoring, document cataloguing, and subsurface modeling of the landslide complex. A geographic information system (GIS) was integrated with a visual programming based subsurface model to facilitate modular integration of monitoring data with borehole information. Subsurface modeling was organized by material type and activity state based on multiple sources of kinematic measurement. The system is organized to accept new borehole information as it becomes available, as well as integrate updates to surveying data, or reclassification of surficial deposits. The framework is constructed to modularly integrate remotely sensed imagery and other spatial datasets such as LiDAR-derived elevation products as more precise datasets become available. The framework allows for terrestrial LiDAR survey error estimation, borehole siting, and placement of wireless sensor (GPS, accelerometers, geophysical) networks for optimized spatial relevance and utility. After the problems and delays suffered during the construction of the North Tunnel, due to a complex geologic context of highly fractured and soft rocks under a highly urbanized environment, a very dense automatic monitoring system was implemented to control the settlements of surface (more than 1000 points), the structures adjacent to the tunnel alignment and the underground galleries being constructed. The latest automatic instrumentation systems were installed, using for example AMTS capabilities in terms of \"automatic prismless settlement monitoring\". All the data (geotechnical, structural and geological) was gathered in a global automatic data acquisition system and continuously available on a web based interface. Three different threshold levels (notification, anomaly, alert) were set up, each one with a differential and an absolute value for settlements. Depending on the actual geological site conditions and the actual monitored settlements, different supporting systems and excavation techniques were used. Furthermore, The monitoring data was also used to predict and anticipate the future settlement , by comparing it continuously with the theoretical Peck settlement curves. This method allowed a better risk management by limiting the settlement on existing structures and helped to secure the Works progress schedule, for a project that lasts from July 2007 to March 2011. This is particularly the case in underground construction. Geological modelling\nin three-dimensions (3D) can provide a detailed definition of sub-surface conditions. Such modelling\nrequires the extension of traditional GIS methods to handle the volumetric representations. Over the\npast two decades, a series of sophisticated 3D modelling technologies have been developed to address this\nneed. However, the adoption of these techniques in the geotechnical industry has lagged behind technological\nadvances.\nTwo contrasting approaches to 3D geological modelling are presented: a) the Thames Gateway Development\nZone (TGDZ) in London, UK and b) subsurface characterisation studies in Boston, USA. The\nTGDZ studies used ‘GSI3D’ software, while the Boston studies involved geostatistical evaluations of the\nfield data and the Environmental Visualization System (EVS) for model creation and visualisation. Both\nstudies have created 3D geological models attributed with physical and mechanical property data, but this\nhas been achieved in two different ways. The TGDZ study provides a single uniform property attribution\nto individual geological units, whereas the Boston studies used geostatistical methods (kriging) to interpolate\nborehole sample data onto a 3D structured mesh. This 'discretisation' allowed the development of\nvolumetric models that quantified the variability of the data used to build the property model.\nThese different modelling methods provide solutions to two very different problems. In the TGDZ, the\nrequirement was for regional scale information for ground investigation design, for assessing water management\nstrategies, and as a tool for communicating information to non-geo-specialists. In this situation,\nthe best approach was a system for model building that did not require a specialist modeller, the use of\nbulk attribution, and the ability for modelling to be carried out quickly using a desktop computer. However,\nin Boston, a more specialist solution was required to provide a detailed understanding of the natural\nvariability of the complex geology, thus discretisation and spatial interpolation of
