Similar to the approach for wine in France and Italy, more and more coffee-producing countries try to establish appellation systems for coffee. Whereas some countries and regions such as Colombia or Jamaica have already legally protected GIs for coffee, most coffee GIs are still informal, meaning that no legal protection has been obtained so far. But the recent acceptation of the term Café de Colombia as a Protected Geographical Indication in the European Union and the Ethiopian Trademark Initiative document the increasing engagement of coffee-producing countries to achieve an appropriate legal protection for their GIs. From an economic point of view, data from U.S. online retail stores indicate that single-origin coffees receive significant higher retail prices, with 100% Kona coffee from Hawaii and Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee being the most expensive ones. Correlations were sought between absorbance in wavelength classes as determined by NIRS, and a set of variables describing soil quality grouped into three classes: (i) chemical variables (Ca, Mg, K, exchangeable Al, total P, P-Bray II); (ii) organic variables (total C, total N, N−NH4+, N−NO3−, respirometry and carbon content in different fractions separated by the LUDOX physical methods) and (iii) NIRS variables quantifying the absorptions in the near infrared region separated into 101 classes of wavelength). For each group of variables, a principal component analysis (PCA), associated with discriminant analysis, was run. Each class of variables separated the different soil-use systems (***P<0.001) similarly. Co-inertia analyses among the different groups of variables verified the sensitivity of the NIRS in detecting significant changes in the soil chemical and organic composition, as well as in microbial activity. CLR is of worldwide importance, while CBD is still restricted to Africa. Host resistances present in C. canephora to both destructive diseases have been successfully introgressed into C. arabica, after several decades of breeding and selection notably in Brazil, Colombia, India and for CBD resistance in East Africa. CLR resistant cultivars have since been grown on hundreds of thousands of hectares in Latin America and elsewhere, while CBD (and CLR) resistant cultivars are now increasingly being planted in East and South Eastern Africa. They contribute to ecologically sustainable coffee production and to considerable socio-economic benefits for the coffee growers. Nevertheless, some representatives of the international coffee trade continue to be sceptical about the cup quality of these modern cultivars. Coffee is a tropical crop of relatively high quality, whose value is increasing as consumer demand in developed countries for specialty coffee. Smallholders in emerging markets can benefit by capitalizing on the natural resource variability in their production system and from the knowledge that they have about this variability. The objective of this paper is to illustrate the benefits of systematically targeting management practices by coffee growers to improve attributes of their product. Data from case studies in Colombia and Mexico show statistically significant differences in beverage quality of coffees grown under different production conditions such as slope aspect, varieties, times of harvest, and shade levels. Possible intervention options can be selected by growers in terms of their ease of implementation, the likely improvement of quality that they achieve and the resource intensiveness they require. The conclusion is that optimum management is site specific so that it is not possible to make any blanket recommendations. The objective of this study was to develop and implement a sound, robust and repeatable approach with and for the FNC to identify regional causal relationships between coffee quality and environmental characteristics as bases for labels of denomination of origin. Environmental differences between coffee-growing areas in the departments of Cauca and Nariño were statistically significant for several characteristics, including the number of dry months, annual precipitation and diurnal temperature range. The dominant varieties (Caturra and Colombia) did not show major differences in quality attributes, and were pooled for the analyses with the environmental data. There are significant differences in biochemical and sensorial product characteristics between the two departments. The spatial patterns in product characteristics exhibit a non-random, regionally-changing structure that is related to those in the environmental data. The generated results provided ample evidence to support the application for regionally-based denominations of origin. Recommendations were derived to help mainstreaming the developed approach and thereby facilitate policy decisions for its use in other geographies and with other crops. Furthermore, the importance of systematic interdisciplinary institutional collaboration for large-scale denomination of origin projects was corroborated for food policy dialogue and decision making. It seems plausible that producers of high-quality products within other commodities are likely to follow the FNC in seeking denomination of origin for their goods.
