The size composition of the catch varied during the fishing season and the polymodal nature of the length-frequency distribution indicated a number of age groups present in the catch. Scales and otoliths were examined to ascertain the age structure of the catch. Inconsistent sculpturing of scales from the same fish and failure to delineate entire rings on the scale past the first two rings did not permit aging of fish suspected of being older than two years. Annular marks on otoliths were not resolved. The length-weight relationship was derived. It is suggested that the scup resource is being over-exploited. Both total landings of scup throughout their range and catch per trip of the winter trawler fleet have declined. Small fish, by market sorting standards, have become an increasingly important component of the landed catch because of the scarcity of larger fish. vocal signals produced by wild-caught pre-volant and volantMyotis lucifugusAudio recordings were made from young animals (1-33 days old) and adults (over 1 year of age). The animals were removed from an attic maternity roost and studied individually in a room below. To stimulate flight-related behaviours, animals were released from a launching platform via a hinged floor, and their vocalizations were recorded as they approached a soft foam pad below. When the hinged floor opened, the youngest animals (1-4 days old) typically dropped onto the pad, but older animals either flapped their wings to achieve some horizontal displacement (>4 days) or sustained horizontal flight (>17 days). Vocalizations recorded under these conditions showed frequency modulation characteristic of adult echolocation sounds, even in animals as young as 4 days. Ontogenetic trends showed an increase in sound frequency, an increase in sound repetition rate and a decrease in sound duration as the animals matured. During July the population of bats arriving at the hibernacula consisted of adult males and nulliparous females, while in August and September subadults and post-partum females predominated. 3. Inside the hibernacula bats often flew in pairs consisting of adult males following females, and transient groups of females and subadult males formed around adult males. 4. Mating began in late August and had two behaviourally distinct phases. Prior to the build-up of torpid females in the hibernacula, copulations followed both paired flying associations and interactions in groups. After torpid females became common, adult males often forced copulations with torpid bats of either sex. 5. Adult males showed no site fidelity or competition for females. 6. Through comparative analyses of bats, we show that multiple mating by males, in the absence of multiple mating by females, has no evolutionary impact on relative brain dimension. In contrast, bat species with promiscuous females have relatively smaller brains than do species with females exhibiting mate fidelity. This pattern may be a consequence of the demonstrated negative evolutionary relationship between investment in testes and investment in brains, both metabolically expensive tissues.
