I had earlier read a thought-provoking article called Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age by a Canadian academic named George Siemens, and was intrigued to stumble across references to a related online discussion that was taking place, led by Professor Siemens and another Canadian researcher named Stephen Downes. OK, to be honest, I am not sure that I actually participated in the course (and I wasn't actually sure if it was a course in the traditional sense ... although it was certainly a community), given that my 'participation' consisted of a haphazard scanning of emails and RSS feeds being generated by people whose were much more engaged in the effort than I was. That said, both the content and approach piqued my curiosity, and I spent enough time browsing through related materials that I was able to tell my boss with a straight face that I was doing some 'online learning'.\nI saw Siemens speak at eLearning Africa, was suitably impressed, and later tried to figure out a way to bring him to the World Bank to talk about his work as part a new series we were trying to put together on 'eduradicals'. I was particularly interested in learning more about, and exposing colleagues to, the concept of a 'massive open online course', which (it turns out) was the label that was being applied to what Siemens and Downes (and a few thousand other people) had been engaged in. Given the courses' huge size, exchanges between the professor and students are minimal. But many MOOC's feature automated grading and the ability to earn a certificate for mastering the material. More than 1.3 million students have already signed up for MOOC's through Coursera, a for-profit company founded by two Stanford University computer scientists. A handful of other providers, such as Udacity and Udemy, which are also for-profit, and edX, a nonprofit effort run jointly by MIT, Harvard University, and the University of California at Berkeley, are rapidly adding courses. Online discussions are as important in MOOCs as in other online courses. Online discussions that occur in MOOCs are influenced by additional factors resulting from their volatile and voluntary participation structure. This article aims to examine discussions that took place in MobiMOOC in the spring of 2011, a MOOC structured around mobile learning. This line of inquiry focused on language from the discussions that contained emotive vocabulary in the MobiMOOC discussion forums. Emotive vocabulary is words or phrases that are implicitly emotional (happy, sad, frustrated) or relate to emotional contexts (I wasn't able to...). This emotive vocabulary, when present, was examined to determine whether it could serve as a mechanism for predicting future and continued participation in the MOOC. In this research, narrative inquiry approach was used in order to shine a light on the possible predictive qualities of emotive text in both participants who withdrew from the course as well as moderately or moderately active participants. The findings of this exploratory study suggest that learning design can enable greater peer collaboration and interaction. However, the increased interaction does not necessarily equate to deeper processing of information. The conclusion is reached that unless the value-added nature of increased peer interaction and collaborative inquiry is better understood by teacher educators and student teachers; it is unlikely that habitual learning behaviours will change. In addition, some EMLs have been proposed as computational languages that support the processing of learning unit models by appropriate Learning Management Systems (LMSs). In this context, six years ago, IMS Learning Design (IMS LD) was proposed as a computational EML. IMS LD supports the modelling of learning units to a long extent and it has become the reference EML. Nevertheless, the expressiveness of IMS LD is a hot topic that has been discussed by several authors during the last years. This paper contributes to this discussion by analyzing the modelling of three learning units with IMS LD.
