"abstractNote": "Certain forms of anarchism, especially those associated with primitivism, regard nature as a fundamental source of individual liberty, self-awareness, and self-responsibility. These distinctive varieties of 'ecological anarchism' often combine a wild(er)ness ethos with a polemical critique of the social constraints and environmental damage they identify, to varying degrees, with 'civilisation'. To anarchists associated with Enlightenment humanist traditions, like Bookchin, such accounts epitomise an irrational and regressive form of nature worship, one supposedly shared with many deep ecologists. This critique is, though, somewhat misplaced and obscures the potential of ecological anarchism and its current failings. Re-wilding understandings of self and nature offer diverse ethico-political possibilities but only if it is recognised that self-identities, idea(l)s of nature, and even conceptions of individual autonomy are partly constituted by the same social histories that primitivism dismisses. "note": "Similar to Nietzsche's Twilight of the Idols, that served as a criticism of contemporary German culture, Twilight of the Machines is Zerzan's concise introduction to the crisis of civilization. Focusing on the acquisition of symbolic thought {language, images} in our species, Zerzan criticizes the development of our symbolic culture {civilization} as a force of control, minimizing direct experience. Technology is a direct result of symolic culture. According to Zerzan, division of labor, from farming to computer programmers, leads to hierarchical forms of organization that alienate the individual from his or her environment and directly assault the natural world. The collective solution to the crisis of civilization isn't more efficient forms of technology, rather an unlearning of mediated experience through symbolic culture. Zerzan ultimately calls for an abandoment of the industrial mode of existence and a return to direct experience with nature.
