The data base is the \"Generations and Gender Survey\", a representative survey carried out for Germany in 2005. Results indicate that entering the empty-nest phase increases the risk of breakup. This risk is consistently higher than that of couples whose children still live with them. Soon after children have left, this level of risk converges with the level of risk among childless couples. The results suggest that the empty nest-effect is due to the loss of marriage-specific capital and to the reduction of parents' mutual dependence as well as to problems of adjustment and to previous postponement of a breakup. Further possible explanations for the empty-nest effect - reduction in household burden, selective moving out behavior of children, and selective parenthood - seem to be of minor importance. Beyond the questions examined here, the results indicate that the higher stability of marriages with children compared to childless marriages is indeed due to the causal effect of children on parental union rather than to the fact that children are more likely to be born within the framework of stable partnerships in the first place.
