Oberlin College is a highly selective four-year institution with 3,000 students. The Oberlin College Library won the ACRL's Excellence in Academic Libraries Award in 2002> There is a main library, branch libraries for art, music, and science, and storage facilities.

Fifteen years ago the Reference and Instruction Department at the main library centered on a reference desk staffed by librarians and one paraprofessional.
\n\n
There is still a reference desk but now the system is built around a research consultation service.
\n\n
Five reasons for the change:
\n| \n • \n | \n\n Increased demand for teaching and instruction. Ninety percent of new students take a freshman seminar. Every seminar instructor is contacted by a librarian and has a chance to bring a librarian in to speak. \n | \n
| \n • \n | \n\n Changes in usage of reference services. Fewer research questions at the desk, more directional questions, more virtual reference. \n | \n
| \n • \n | \n\n Increased demand for research appointments. Allow students to sign up at ref desk for consultations. Each librarian offers about ten consult slots per week. \n | \n
| \n • \n | \n\n Changes in the research behavior of undergraduates. Dependence on web, expectations of customization and personal help, ambitious projects. \n | \n
| \n • \n | \n\n Changes in the library's physical environment. Academic Commons takes up whole main floor. The Research Help Desk sits next to the IT Help Desk. \n | \n
“Robust training program” for students who work evenings at Research Desk. Everyone in Reference leads at least one class for them.

many ways. The word bibliography comes from two Greek words meaning book and write. The term bibliographic instruction signifies the use and understanding of books. Library instruction refers to the use of buildings, locations, facilities and materials. With the increase of nonbook items, the former term has become restrictive. Bibliographic instruction is the intensive process of teaching research methodology. Library and bibliographic instruction are two different things, but librarians use both terms. The latter is used when they teach the use of specific library materials, research methods, and use of individual sources, but the term seems too narrow.
