            "abstractNote": "The main objective of this paper is to characterize the spatial and temporal variability of rainfall at spatial and temporal scales that are consistent with urban hydrological applications. In this way, 24 rain periods have been analyzed according to a geostatistical approach. This analysis has focused on the non-zero rainfall variogram. The studied rain periods were recorded by the weather radar of Treillieres between May and November 2009. This C-band radar is located 10 km north of Nantes (France). It provides rainfall radar images of high spatial resolution (250 x 250 m(2)) and of instantaneous temporal resolution. Results indicated four different types of rainfall fields, which display very different variability scales, including double structures within the same fields. This study highlights the benefit of radar images featuring high resolution, which in turn allow studying small-scale variability. It would be of interest to analyse how those different rainfall structures affect hydrological modelling of urban watersheds. Associated with the analysis of the indicator variograms, those results could be used to simulate rainfall fields.",

            "abstractNote": "As of 2007, more than half of the world's population now lives in urban areas and their activities has led to an increase in building energy demand, notably in summer. The higher temperatures in densely built areas are mainly due to landscaping and anthropogenic heat fluxes such as air conditioning systems. Acting on urban landscaping, building density, surface albedo and green areas can mitigate the urban heat island effect, with a direct and indirect improvement of building energy performance.\nIn the present study, a new numerical approach has been developed to assess building energy demand, including microclimate interactions on buildings. The different physical phenomena were computed at the district scale, with different meshes, for the surfaces and volumes of the tridimensional numerical mockup. The urban microclimate was assessed using specific models developed for outdoor airflows, and longwave and shortwave radiative exchanges. The thermal behaviour of buildings was computed using a model that is based on the weighting factors method, which saves computation time. The thermal balances, including indoor and outdoor balances, were computed simultaneously for the whole district cells for each time step.\nThe case study we selected was based on a district located in Nantes, France, named Pin Sec. A parametric study was carried out on cool materials and the results are displayed as the cooling demand of buildings for each case studied. The impact of cool materials on both building energy demand and urban microclimate are clearly demonstrated by the results we obtained.",

            "abstractNote": "The urban microclimate is due to complex physical interactions with the contribution of water balance, thermo-radiative exchanges and airflows. In this paper, we present and discuss modeling of heat island effects and mitigation techniques in order to give consistent results considering different time and space scales, and different fluxes (heat, water and winds) from ground to urban canopy, including buildings. The models and numerical descriptions are presented in detail and illustrated on typical examples of heat island mitigation techniques. At the neighborhood scale, alternative rainwater management techniques are studied by considering their impact on both seasonal water table depth and surface-atmosphere heat fluxes. Assessing the building thermal performance interactions with the microclimate requires adapted models that have to be refined for a better description of building envelope and systems effects. Two examples at the street and the neighborhood scale, modifying the building radiative properties or using green envelopes, show how simulation brings out the potential benefits of these techniques for the heat island mitigation and building energy performance.",

            "abstractNote": "In this paper, a newly developed heat and moisture transfer model for green envelopes is integrated in a transient building simulation program (TRNSYS) in order to investigate its dynamic performances coupled with a multizone building code. On the one hand we focus on the understanding of the coupled heat and mass transfers between green envelopes and the building; and on the other hand we study the model accuracy to assess the vegetation impacts together with building design. At first, the model reliability is verified through experimental comparisons during a summer period. Then, the developed simulation tool is used to assess the impacts of green walls on building energy performance. Since this model involves different hygrothermal transfer phenomena, the detailed numerical model results are analyzed to determine the weight of each phenomenon: evapotranspiration, shading effect and additional thermal resistance of green roof or wall. The results highlight the thermal benefits in summer and winter, especially for the west walls. The analysis of the different transfer mechanisms show that the foliage shading reduces the surface temperature variation whereas the evapotranspiration ensures the passive cooling when the water availability is sufficient.",

            "abstractNote": "This paper presents the design and the results of a reduced-scale experimental bench to study the effect of green roofs and green facades on local urban microclimate. An analysis of experimental data was carried out on three street canyons: one reference street, one street between two buildings with green roofs and one with a green wall to the west. The results show a hygrothermal effect of green envelopes on buildings on urban heat island mitigation. In the detailed analysis of these green coating techniques, we highlighted that green facades modify strongly the radiative balance of the street and improve the hygrothermal comfort in urban canyons through reducing the overheating in the street in hot summer days.",

            "abstractNote": "For applications such as outdoor Augmented Reality (AR) or 3D City Model construction of updating, a real-time registration between a video sequence and a Geographic Information System (GIS) is required. In this work, we present a registration system using a GPS prior and a skyline matching method to estimate the camera pose from images. A skyline rectification method through vertical vanishing point detection is also developed to enable arbitrary camera orientation, with non null tilt. The proposed approach is robust, fully automatic and computationally inexpensive which makes it a possible solution for mobile device applications. The performance of our approach is demonstrated in several experimental evaluations. The possible refinement of camera location through a systematic method is also investigated.",

            "abstractNote": "Camera pose estimation from an image has long been a very active research for Video/GIS registration. Different from traditional methods which are based on direct building feature matching, this paper presents an alternative method which uses an overall Skyline feature to determine the camera's orientation. Through our skyline matching method we find out a way to transform an image/model matching problem into a curve matching problem which significantly reduced the computation complexity and make it a possible solution for real-time applications.",

            "abstractNote": "One important aspect of semantic data in computer visualization is to offer supporting and extra information of the environment besides the pure graphical information to system users. It is devoted to help them understand the visualization result better. This paper presents a way to visualize semantic data in 3D urban environment in form of text, which is similar to the issue of 3D labelling and annotation. Different objects in 3D urban environment need different annotation techniques. Occlusions, overlaps, readability, visibility and information density are problems encountered frequently, and several potential solutions are proposed accordingly. A primary test is done to compare the performances among three different text layout techniques: floating text, fading text, linking text. The result shows that floating text and fading text are well understood in a 3D environment, the former one maintaining good readability and visibility and the latter one efficiently avoiding occlusions. Finally several open questions are proposed in the discussion part.",
