"abstractNote": "Tick-borne diseases are on the rise. Lyme borreliosis is prevalent throughout the Northern Hemisphere, and the same Ixodes tick species transmitting the etiologic agents of this disease also serve as vectors of pathogens causing human babesiosis, human granulocytic anaplasmosis, and tick-borne encephalitis. Recently, several novel agents of rickettsial diseases have been described. Despite an explosion of knowledge in the fields of tick biology, genetics, molecular biology, and immunology, transitional research leading to widely applied public health measures to combat tick-borne diseases has not been successful. Except for the vaccine against tick-borne encephalitis virus, and a brief campaign to reduce this disease in the former Soviet Union through widespread application of DDT, success stories in the fight against tick-borne diseases are lacking. Both new approaches to tick and pathogen control and novel ways of translating research findings into practical control measures are needed to prevent tick-borne diseases in the twenty-first century.",

"abstractNote": "Aim Ixodes scapularis is the most important vector of human tick-borne pathogens in the United States, which include the agents of Lyme disease, human babesiosis and human anaplasmosis, among others. The density of host-seeking I. scapularis nymphs is an important component of human risk for acquiring Borrelia burgdorferi, the aetiological agent of Lyme disease. In this study we used climate and field sampling data to generate a predictive map of the density of host-seeking I. scapularis nymphs that can be used by the public, physicians and public health agencies to assist with the diagnosis and reporting of disease, and to better target disease prevention and control efforts.",

"abstractNote": "Since its recognition in 1975, Lyme disease has emerged as the most common vectorborne disease in much of the northern hemisphere, with an incidence still rising. This is mutifactorial, due to increased supporting animal populations, increased awareness on the part of both patients and physicians, and imperfect reporting methods. It is a complex enzootic illness with a wide range of clinical presentation. The challenge is to coordinate the genetics and molecular biology, a timely and accurate diagnosis, and local, state, and international public health prevention and education efforts in order to better understand and avoid this endemic infection.",

"abstractNote": "Most human diseases come from nature, from pathogens that live and breed in non-human animals and are \"accidentally\" transmitted to us. Human illness is only the culmination of a complex series of interactions among species in their natural habitats. To avoid exposure to these pathogens, we must understand which species are involved, what regulates their abundance, and how they interact. Lyme disease affects the lives of millions of people in the US, Europe, and Asia. It is the most frequently reported vector-borne disease in the United States; About 20,000 cases have been reported each year over the past five years, and tens of thousands more go unrecognized and unreported. Despite the epidemiological importance of understanding variable LD risk, such pursuit has been slow, indirect, and only partially successful, due in part to an overemphasis on identifying the small subset of key players that contribute to Lyme disease risk, as well as a general misunderstanding of effective treatment options. This book is a synthetic review of research on the ecology of Lyme disease in North America. It describes how humans get sick, why some years and places are so risky and others not. It challenges dogma; for instance, that risk is closely tied to the abundance of deer, and replaces it with a new understanding that embraces the complexity of species and their interactions. It describes why the place where Lyme disease emerged, coastal New England, set researchers on mistaken pathways. It shows how tiny acorns have enormous impacts on our probability of getting sick, why biodiversity is good for our health, why living next to a small woodlot is dangerous, and why Lyme disease is an excellent model system for understanding many other human and animal diseases.",

"abstractNote": "Ixodes scapularis , the black-legged tick, is the principal vector of the bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi , that causes Lyme disease. This tick has also been reported as a vector for Babesia microti , an encephalitis virus, and ehrlichial pathogens of humans. Ixodes scapularis is prevalent in southeastern New York and 40% of Lyme disease cases reported annually in the United States occur in the State. The presence of I. scapularis and B. burgdorferi in central New York has not been studied and it was the intent of this investigation to determine if these species are established in Onondaga and Oswego counties. Ticks were sampled using standard tick collection techniques including live mammal examinations, flagging, and carbon dioxide baiting. Live-trapping of small- and medium-sized mammals during 1996 and 1997 resulted in the collection of 342 and 293 mammals, respectively. Immature I. scapularis (n = 54) were collected from 4 mammal species: Peromyscus leucopus (white-footed mouse), Zapus hudsonicus (meadow jumping mouse), Napaeozapus insignis (woodland jumping mouse), and Microtus pennsylvanicus (meadow vole). Examination of 142 Odocoileus virginianus (white-tailed deer) resulted in the collection of 2 adult I. scapularis from 2 deer. Other tick species collected from mammals included Ixodes cookei, Ixodes marxi, Ixodes dentatus and Dermacentor albipictus . No ticks were collected by flagging or carbon dioxide baiting during this study. Ticks were tested for the presence of Borrelia spp. using a direct fluorescent antibody staining procedure. Live ticks submitted to the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), Tick Identification Service (Syracuse) were included in the study. Of 141 ticks collected largely from Oswego and Onondaga counties, 3 adult I. scapularis were found positive for the presence of borrelia. Two were removed from domestic animals residing in the City of Syracuse, and 1 was from a human residing in the Town of Weedsport (Cayuga County). Noninfected, immature I. scapularis were also collected from Onondaga and Oswego counties. This study established the presence of I. scapularis in Onondaga and Oswego counties, although populations of this species in central New York appear to be low at the present time. However, I. scapularis believed to be locally acquired were positive for the presence of borrelia. Ecological factors that are important to the survival of this species, such as host and habitat suitability, are present and may support increasing tick populations.",

"abstractNote": "The number of tick bites received by individuals wearing either permethrin-treated or untreated summer clothing (T-shirt, shorts, socks, and sneakers) was compared during a controlled indoor study. Pathogen-free nymphal Ixodes scapularis Say were placed on the left shoe, right leg, and left arm of 15 (5/treatment group/d) human volunteers wearing untreated outfits or outfits treated with permethrin either commercially or using a do-at-home treatment kit. The number and location of ticks attached to subjects’ skin were recorded 2.5 h postinfestation. Subjects wearing outfits treated with permethrin received 3.36 times fewer tick bites than subjects wearing untreated outfits. No statistically significant differences in number of tick bites were detected between commercial permethrin treatment (19.33%) and the do-at-home permethrin application method (24.67%). The success of permethrin-treated clothing in reducing tick bites varied depending on the specific article of clothing. Subjects wearing permethrin-treated sneakers and socks were 73.6 times less likely to have a tick bite than subjects wearing untreated footware. Subjects wearing permethrin-treated shorts and T-shirts were 4.74 and 2.17 times, respectively, less likely to receive a tick bite in areas related to those specific garments than subjects wearing untreated shorts and T-shirts. Ticks attached to subjects were classified as alive or dead before removal. On subjects wearing untreated outfits, 97.6% of attached nymphs were alive, whereas significantly fewer (22.6%) attached nymphs were alive on subjects wearing repellent-treated outfits. Results of this study demonstrate the potential of permethrin-treated summer clothing for significantly reducing tick bites and tick-borne pathogen transmission.",

"abstractNote": "The efficacy and residual activity of a factory-based, permethrin-impregnated military battle dress uniform (BDU) using a new polymer-coating technique has been evaluated by laboratory and field testing during deployment to Afghanistan and compared with two commercially available, widely used dipping methods. Residual permethrin concentrations and remaining contact toxicities on treated fabrics before laundering, after up to 100 launderings as well as after being worn-out during deployment were tested against Aedes aegypti (L.) and Ixodes ricinus (L.). The residual amount of permethrin was considerably higher with the polymer-coating technique with 280 mg/m2 remaining after 100 launderings. Polymer-coated BDUs collected for disposal after being worn-out during military deployment showed equivalent or better residual knockdown efficacy against test arthropods when compared with the results obtained with the US Army IDA (Illinois Department of Agriculture)-Kit after 50 launderings, which represent the recommended baseline for re-impregantion or disposal of the impregnated fabric. BDUs impregnated by the polymer-coating method were found to be effective throughout the lifetime of the uniform, ensuring protection of soldiers in the field from arthropod vectors, while simultaneously decreasing logistical constraints and occupational health threats.",
