"abstractNote": "A new online business model called online innovation contest is emerging in recent years, which refers to a model that draws support from the internet. Seekers post innovation projects in online platforms and contestants submit solutions to compete with each other, aiming at winning the prize. As a new form of innovation, more and more firms and individuals who have innovation problems post online contests for the purpose of lowering their R&D risks and reducing the costs. This paper reviews the development of online innovation contests and the literature on innovation contests, particularly as it centers on contest performance and tournament design. Meanwhile, On the basis of the present status, this paper points out the existing problems and future directions on this field.",

"abstractNote": "The advent of large scale, high-bandwidth on-line access and generously powered ocean floor observatories were predicted to transform the way ocean science is conducted. They have lived up to this promise. New cabled observatories have sometimes in excess of 100 different instruments semipermanently installed in areas of scientific interest. The instruments represent hundreds of different variables measured at a high frequency (often once per second or more) on a 24/7/365 basis, thereby generating large data volumes that accumulate in archives. Not only are we talking about large data volumes, we are also facing many different data types as instruments are often preprocessing data and assembling them in complex data structures or matrices. For practical purposes, three major data types can be described based on the duty cycles of the instruments producing them: · scalar data coming from single point measurement sensors on a periodic basis with a sampling frequency <; 10Hz; · complex data structures, often produced by active acoustic instruments such as ADCPs and current profilers that produce multi-dimensional matrices typically at a rate ≤ 1 Hz · streams that are produced by passive sensors, continuously sampling their environments at high frequencies (≥ 20Hz) such as cameras and hydrophones, seismometers, etc. The complexity also resides in that many of the instruments are in some way mapping their wider environment and not just their immediate vicinity. Therefore the matrices they sent back represent their own specific encoding of spatial data. Examples here include ADCPs, sonars, but also vehicles moving in one, two or three dimensions (vertical profiler, crawlers, gliders, AUVs, etc.) The instruments and sensors are often of a legacy type, from different vendors, with proprietary formats and usually are not optimized to work in connected, powered environment. The stated goal of the observatories is to enable not onl- science in a particular discipline, but to foster multi-disciplinary experiments, to support real-time science as well as to provide a longitudinal view on the evolutions of the oceans. The above considerations represent significant challenges not only for the scientists, but also for data providers as they need to be in a position to support: · many different science disciplines · scientists not used to dealing with vast amounts of data · scientists not necessarily used to data from instrumentation they are not always familiar with · users still expecting to be able to just “download a couple of years of data” At Ocean Networks Canada, those challenges have been addressed in a number of ways, oftentimes creative and sometimes disruptive. With the support of CANARIE, Canada's advanced research and innovation network, we have adopted the Web 2.0 concepts of participation and contribution. Those two concepts are very powerful and are at the origin of wikipedia, FaceBook, Twitter and, to some extent, massively parallel computer games: they allow individuals to contribute/share content and to participate in groups of like-minded citizens in activities around a specific topic or theme for a period of time. In this contribution, we are describing the innovations that are now available to users of the NEPTUNE Canada cabled network access interfaces and how they contribute to address many of the challenges that scientists face in dealing with those first Big Science infrastructures for the study of the oceans. They include a data visualization utility that allows plots created to be posted and shared with other users, a data search tool that offers a multitude of data formatting and averaging/decimation options, a real-time camera control interface that allows multiple users to simultaneously use the instruments and chat among themselves, regardless of where they are each located on the planet, a tool that encourages users",

"abstractNote": "Online labor marketplaces offer the potential to automate tasks too difficult for computers, but don't always provide accurate results. MobileWorks is a crowd platform that departs from the marketplace model to provide robust, high-accuracy results using three new techniques. A dynamic work-routing system identifies expertise in the crowd and ensures that posted work completes within a bounded time with fair wages. A peer-management system helps prevent wrong answers. Last, social interaction techniques let best workers manage and teach other crowd members. This process allows the crowd to collaboratively learn how to solve new tasks.",

"abstractNote": "Generating models from large data sets-and determining which subsets of data to mine-is becoming increasingly automated. However, choosing what data to collect in the first place requires human intuition or experience, usually supplied by a domain expert. This paper describes a new approach to machine science which demonstrates for the first time that nondomain experts can collectively formulate features and provide values for those features such that they are predictive of some behavioral outcome of interest. This was accomplished by building a Web platform in which human groups interact to both respond to questions likely to help predict a behavioral outcome and pose new questions to their peers. This results in a dynamically growing online survey, but the result of this cooperative behavior also leads to models that can predict the user's outcomes based on their responses to the user-generated survey questions. Here, we describe two Web-based experiments that instantiate this approach: The first site led to models that can predict users' monthly electric energy consumption, and the other led to models that can predict users' body mass index. As exponential increases in content are often observed in successful online collaborative communities, the proposed methodology may, in the future, lead to similar exponential rises in discovery and insight into the causal factors of behavioral outcomes.",

"abstractNote": "Recent behavioral and cultural changes driven by the paradigm of mass collaboration highlighted the phenomenon of crowdsourcing as an innovative and promising production model, with positive effects in several business areas. In the field of music, the so called wave of crowds has fostered creative processes where people from anywhere in the world with Internet access can collaborate in different ways in musical productions, even not being practitioners. The present work is a study of crowd computing applications in the context of music, with an eye towards the crowdsourcing phenomena. We investigate forms of collaboration involving crowds and the available platforms. We also discuss the challenges coupled to this domain and propose a research agenda.",

"abstractNote": "MOS (mean opinion score) subjective quality studies are used to evaluate many signal processing methods. Since laboratory quality studies are time consuming and expensive, researchers often run small studies with less statistical significance or use objective measures which only approximate human perception. We propose a cost-effective and convenient measure called crowdMOS, obtained by having internet users participate in a MOS-like listening study. Workers listen and rate sentences at their leisure, using their own hardware, in an environment of their choice. Since these individuals cannot be supervised, we propose methods for detecting and discarding inaccurate scores. To automate crowdMOS testing, we offer a set of freely distributable, open-source tools for Amazon Mechanical Turk, a platform designed to facilitate crowdsourcing. These tools implement the MOS testing methodology described in this pa per, providing researchers with a user-friendly means of performing subjective quality evaluations without the overhead associated with laboratory studies. Finally, we demonstrate the use of crowdMOS using data from the Blizzard text-to-speech competition, showing that it delivers accurate and repeatable results.",

"abstractNote": "The large base of Internet-enabled smartphones provides an excellent opportunity for a fine-grained observation of the structure of the Internet and a quantitative evaluation of its characteristics. Smartphones can operate as active mobile monitors and, coordinated by a central entity, they can probe the network on a local scale. Then the results produced by a large number of participants can be merged to obtain a detailed graph of the Internet. Besides the design of the measurement framework, this paper describes the implementation and validation of a traceroute-like tool that is compatible with the Android platform. This confirms that smartphone-based crowdsourcing of network properties can be a viable strategy.",

"abstractNote": "In collaborative crowdsourcing, the problem of maintaining solvers' motivation and participation plays a crucial role. It has been noticed that one of the major issues is related to the scarce capacity of novices to face expert users in finding good solutions, which leads to an high rate of community abandonment. In order to overcome such a problem the best solvers should be asked to illustrate the rationale of their solutions and to share the adopted heuristics before receiving the award. This procedure allows the less expert to learn by doing and see how best solvers innovate products. The paper presents the “You solve, I learn” approach and how it has been implemented in an original platform able to promote innovation, creativity and effective knowledge sharing. The software use and achieved results are demonstrated through a case study.",

This open innovation design and service model has been evaluated as a new business model from case studies in China. It would be a new business model for other small- and medium-sized industry enterprises across the world.",

Then there will be four cases known as \"call for proposals for Starbucks coffee\", \"Innovation platform for Crowdsourcing\", \"Istockphoto community\" and \"Threadless T-shirt design online\". Then comes to the general conclusion through the study on operating mechanism of Crowdsourcing: in today's society characterized by the popularity of internet, the nature of diversity is a great power, and Crowdsourcing can take advantages of the mechanism of public diversity, collective cognition, collective intelligence, collective selection to innovate to gain companies favor and huge commercial success.",

"abstractNote": "Advent of Internet provides growing features for the companies to engage users in online platforms where users share, design, and innovate different ideas. Crowdsourcing is an emerging phenomenon used to get benefits through these online community members who are unknown to companies in general. Crowdsourcing is crucial for the companies to identify consumers' needs and to solve these felt needs. The objective of this study was to explore the key activities performed through crowdsourcing, the incentives structure, geographical origins of platforms. This explorative study reveals the overall view of incentives structure in various online platforms. Collecting and analyzing information from over 400 online platforms, this study provides a phenomenal perspective in global context focusing particularly on prevalent activities, companies' incentives and geographical location etc. in relation with online crowdsourcing platforms.",

"abstractNote": "This paper addresses the emerging area of crowdsourcing. Crowdsourcing is an online problem solving paradigm that is used to tap the intellect of the crowd. This combination of the human and computational intelligence has open doors to complex problem domains such as software project management. Crowdsourcing occurs in teams and among various teams. During the process various tasks such as knowledge sharing, problem solving, problem detection and innovative solutions become available on the crowdsourcing platform. This paradigm is very helpful when team members are working on the same problem as they are aware of the dynamics of the solution under development, even people with the similar experience, outside the team, can be helpful as processes related experience to the problem to be solved with advantage of peer vetting outside the systems. We studied various crowdsourcing systems workflows and propose design consideration for engineering such systems.",

"abstractNote": "Crowd sourcing has become a term used to describe a broad variety of effective approaches that engage potentially large and open crowds of participants for the undertaking of a task. The emergence of Heterogeneous Networks (Het Nets) that brings about a significant expansion of existing mobile network capacity will enable and accelerate new forms of mobile and ubiquitous crowd sourcing. This paper aims to explore some of the opportunities and challenges that will face crowd sourcing-based approaches in emerging heterogeneous networked environments. A conceptual architecture for a context-aware mobile crowd sourcing platform is proposed.",

With the growth of crowd sourcing platforms like MTurk or Micro workers, a huge work force and a large knowledge base can be easily accessed and utilized. But due to the anonymity of the workers, they are encouraged to cheat the employers in order to maximize their income. Thus, this paper presents two crowd-based approaches to validate the submitted work. Both approaches are evaluated with regard to their detection quality, their costs and their applicability to different types of typical crowd sourcing tasks.",

"abstractNote": "The shortage of parking in crowded urban areas causes severe societal problems such as traffic congestion, environmental pollution, and many others. Recently, crowdsourced parking, where smartphone users are exploited to collect realtime parking availability information, has attracted significant attention. However, existing crowdsourced parking information systems suffer from low user participation rate and data quality due to the lack of carefully designed incentive schemes. In this paper, we address the incentive problem of trustworthy crowdsourced parking information systems by presenting an incentive platform named TruCentive, where high utility parking data can be obtained from unreliable crowds of mobile users. Our contribution is three-fold. First, we provide hierarchical incentives to stimulate the participation of mobile users for contributing parking information. Second, by introducing utility-related incentives, our platform encourages participants to contribute high utility data and thereby enhances the quality of collected data. Third, our active confirmation scheme validates the parking information utility by game-theoretically formulated incentive protocols. The active confirming not only validates the utility of contributed data but re-sells the high utility data as well. Our evaluation through user study on Amazon Mechanical Turk and simulation study demonstrate the feasibility and stability of TruCentive incentive platform.",

"abstractNote": "The proliferation of Wi-Fi infrastructures has facilitated numerous indoor localization techniques using Wi-Fi location fingerprints. They make it possible to identify a room or a place in urban environment, which is especially important in enabling many interesting location-based services. As there are too many rooms and places such as cafes and restaurants to be recognized in urban environment, the crowdsourcing approach has been proposed to collect Wi-Fi location fingerprints based on user participation. However, its actual deployment in a large-scale urban environment presents numerous design and implementation challenges due to urban characteristics such as a large crowd, dense region, and device diversity. This paper presents Elekspot system, whose design goal is to support system scalability, device heterogeneity, robustness against lack of contributions, and localization accuracy. Through several experiments and implementation of actual applications targeting urban places we confirmed that the architecture and methods of Elekspot can effectively meet the design goals.",

"abstractNote": "Crowdsourcing, a distributed process that involves outsourcing tasks to a network of people, is increasingly used by companies for generating solutions to problems of various kinds. In this way, thousands of people contribute a large amount of text data that needs to already be structured during the process of idea generation in order to avoid repetitions and to maximize the solution space. This is a hard information retrieval problem as the texts are very short and have little predefined structure. We present a solution that involves three steps: text data preprocessing, clustering, and visualization. In this contribution, we focus on clustering and visualization by presenting a Hebbian network approach that is able to learn the principal components of the data while the data set is continuously growing in size. We compare our approach to standard clustering applications and demonstrate its superiority with respect to classification reliability on a real-world example.",

Thousands of workers categorize images, write articles or perform other small tasks on platforms like Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk), Micro workers or Short Task. In this work, we want to give an inside view of the usage data from Micro workers and show that there are significant differences to the well studied MTurk. Further, we have a look at Micro workers from the perspective for a worker, an employer and the platform owner, in order to answer their most important questions: What jobs are most paid? How do I get my work done most quickly? When are the users of my platform active?",

"abstractNote": "Beside of social media networks, crowdsourcing is one of the emerging new applications and business models in the Future Internet, which can dramatically change the future of work and work organization in the on-line world. The crowdsourcing technology can be viewed as \"Human Cloud\" technique, in contrast to \"Machine Cloud Computing\". Using a crowd with a large number of internationally widespread workers and the flexibility of micro-payment services, crowdsourcing platforms like Amazon's MTurk and Microworkers can outsource traditional forms of work organization on a microscopic level of granularity to a large, anonymous crowd of workers, the human cloud. In such platforms work or tasks are organized at a finer granularity and jobs are split into micro-tasks that need to be performed by a human cloud. It is a need of analysis to understand the anatomy of such a platform and of models to describe the time-dependent growth of the human cloud, in order to predict the traffic impact of such novel applications and to forecast the growth dynamics. The purpose of this paper is a measurement-based statistical analysis of a crowdsourcing platform, using the Microworkers.com platform as example. The obtained results are then used to model the growth of such fast-changing environments in the Internet using well-known models from biology. Based on the findings from the population growth, we develop a deterministic fluid model which is an extension of the SIR model of epidemics, in order to investigate the platform dynamics.",

"abstractNote": "Crowdsourcing in enterprises is a promising approach for organizing a flexible workforce. Recent developments show that the idea gains additional momentum. However, an obstacle for widespread adoption is the lack of an integrated way to execute business processes based on a crowdsourcing platform. The main difference compared to traditional approaches in business process execution is that tasks or activities cannot be directly assigned but are posted to the crowdsourcing platform, while people can choose deliberately which tasks to book and work on. In this paper we propose a framework for adaptive execution of business processes on top of a crowdsourcing platform. Based on historical data gathered by the platform we mine the booking behavior of people based on the nature and incentive of the crowdsourced tasks. Using the learned behavior model we derive an incentive management approach based on mathematical optimization that executes business processes in a cost-optimal way considering their deadlines. We evaluate our approach through simulations to prove the feasibility and effectiveness. The experiments verify our assumptions regarding the necessary ingredients of the approach and show the advantage of taking the booking behavior into account compared to the case when it is partially of fully neglected.",

"abstractNote": "Crowd sourcing is a new paradigm of service provision. Current commercial crowd sourcing platforms rarely consider the interaction between task takers, which is extremely required in the disaster management scenario. In this paper, we designed a framework for community based crowd sourcing, i.e., task takers are from an existing community or will easily form a new community. A size-specified community creation method using multiple social contexts is also proposed.",

"abstractNote": "With the explosive international growth in mobile phone adoption, there is an increasing number of text message-based applications providing mission-critical services to mobile phone owners. With such an unexpected leap in the mobile subscriber base, questions have arisen over the reliability of Short Message Service (SMS) as a communication channel in regions of high mobile teledensity growth. This paper provides insight on two points - the architecture of new SMS-based services and an examination of SMS reliability in low resource environments. This is achieved by providing research results detailing the design and implementation of a crowd sourced mobile-based authentication service using asymmetric encryption and data from an in-field view of the reliability of SMS messages using the SMS product authentication service described. A new Mobile Product Authentication (MPA) platform has been designed and implemented using cloud-based distributed computing (server virtualization) and a mobile network reliability server has been built to emulate a quad-SIM cell phone with 2 GB of RAM, 200 GB storage and 2.5 GHz dual-core processing power. To evaluate network throughput, response time and fault-tolerance, time-stamped SMS messages are sent from the network reliability server to the MPA platform on a round-trip flight through Nigeria's largest mobile telecommunications company over varying time periods and network conditions.",

"abstractNote": "Due to the anonymity and low pay of workers in crowd sourcing platforms, there may be concerns regarding reliability and privacy-preservation when using such platforms to deliver services. This paper describes a technique for jointly providing privacy and reliability through stochastic perturbation of micro task definitions and fusion rules to combine the work of several workers. A mathematical model of a crowd sourcing system using this technique is proposed and precise threshold conditions on loss of privacy when workers collude are provided. Tradeoffs between privacy, reliability, and cost are determined.",

"abstractNote": "Crowd sourcing is evolving as a distributed problem-solving and business production model in recent years. In crowd sourcing paradigm, tasks are distributed to networked people to complete such that a company's production cost can be greatly reduced. A crowd sourcing process involves operations of both requesters and workers. A requester submits a task request, a worker selects and completes a task, and the requester only pays the worker for the successful completion of the task. Obviously, it is not efficient that the amount of time spent on selecting a task is comparable with that spent on working on a task, but the monetary reward of a task is just a small amount. Literature mainly focused on exploring what type of tasks can be deployed to the crowd and analyzing the performance of crowd sourcing platforms. However, no existing work investigates on how to support workers to select tasks on crowd sourcing platforms easily and effectively. In this paper, we propose a novel idea on task matching in crowd sourcing to motivate workers to keep on working on crowd sourcing platforms in long run. The idea utilizes the past task preference and performance of a worker to produce a list of available tasks in the order of best matching with the worker during his task selection stage. It aims to increase the efficiency of task completion. We present some preliminary experimental results in case studies. Finally, we address the possible challenges and discuss the future directions.",
