The contents tell that the king granted a tank named Uppaladoṇika to the monks of the Ekadvāra monastery.\nInscription n°2 is engraved immediately below the first one. The two records are separated from each other by a period of about half a century. It is of Gajabāhu Gāmaṇī Abhaya. Bricks found at the site are of a size that was in vogue in the early centuries of the Christian era. \nThe site has two stone inscriptions. The first, in characters of about the 3rd century, is too fragmentary to be deciphered. The second (the present record), is on a short pillar which has obviously been shifted from its original position. No indication of architectural use. Probably set up by itself. 4 lines of writing beginning from the base and elevating vertically towards the top. Paleographically dated of the 6th century, contemporary to the Nāgirikanda inscription. It is dated in the 4th year of the king Mapuruma Budaha Sirimeka Sirisagaboyi Apaya-payi identified with Kitti Sirimegha from the Cūḷavaṁsa, who flourished in the 6th century, less than a century after the reign of Kumāradāsa of the Nāgirijanda inscription. What is legible of the record contains the names of certain fields and mentions a personage. The purpose was to register a gift, by the individual of the lands named to the vihāra which existed at the place in ancient times.",

Five caves and one dāgaba were found in Buddhannehäla, and the present inscription was found in the cave n°3. The pillar was placed upside down to serve as a door-jamb of a Śaiva shrine of about the 11th or early 12th c. A.D. and was evidently brought there from elsewhere. The inscription covers the four sides with respectively from side A to D 32, 34, 33 and 26 lines, written in the alphabet of the latter half of the 10th century A.D. On side A, the inscription is surmounted of a large śrī with an emblem of the sun or a lotus above it. On side D, figures of a crow and a dog are cut underneath to indicate that whosoever transgresses the rules enjoined shall be born in the future as these animals. It records regulations concerning the management of lands (fields, water, employees, cattle, sowing) and give no historical data. But the inscription “son by sacred sprinkling” connotes the prevalence of certain Brahmaṇic or more likely northern Buddhist Mahāyāna rites not sanctioned in the southern Buddhist Church. The official names were not identified.",

It is said to have been discovered in the area of the Abhayagiri (mis-called the Jetevana) vihāra. Mentioned in a report of 1911-12 to be from Nuvara-kalāviya. The slab is inscribed vertically on its face (3 lines), but also in its back (1 line) and thickness (1 line).\nThe script is quite archaic for the period, the last quarter of the 5th century A.D. The record is assigned to Khudda Pārinda, the Tamil king who reigned, according to Wicremasinghe, from 498 to 513.\nThe object of the inscription was to register some donations made to a Buddhist monastery by the queen of Khudda Pārinda. The name of the monastery is not legible but ends by ‘la’. It is therefore not the Abhayagiri vihāra. The stone as probably removed from its original place to the Abhayagiri vihāra for some purpose.",

N°4 is 9ft to the north of n°2 and 3.\nN°1: 4 lines. / N°2 and n°3: each of 3 lines, the third line of n°3 containing only four letters. / N°4: 4 lines.\nScript of the same type of the Nāgirikanda inscription (vol.4, part 3, n°14, pp.115-122).\nThe records are later than the accession of Kassapa I (circa 526-552). They also appear to be earlier the the Nāgirikanda inscription and therefore may be assigned to the period between Kassapa and Kumāradāsa.\nThe content of the four epigraphs are all similar. They record the obtaining of freedom from slavery, of themselves or of their relatives, by various individuals who are named. Epigraphical evidences that slaves were owned by Buddhist monasteries of Ceylon in the 2nd century A.D. and also in later times.",

Two sites with the name of Tim̆biriväva at the West of the Anurādhapura district.\nAt Tim̆biriväva, in the Mahapotāna Kōraḷē, West of the Anurādhapura district, there is an ancient site now known as Veheragala. On the flat rock are the ruins of a small stūpa and vestiges of monastic structure. On the rock near the ruined stūpa are engraved five inscriptions in the Brāhmī script of the early centuries of the Christian era. One of these is the present inscription. It mentions two kings, father and son, and give genealogical information, not found in the chronicles, regarding the royal family of the 4th century. It is five vertical lines long. The object of the record is to register the gift of a tank by a lady named Anuḷabi to the monastery called Gagapavata, which was doubtless the ancient monastery at the site. The inscription is dated in the second year of King Mekavaṇa Aba (Meghavaṇṇābhaya), son of the great king Sirinaka (Sirināga). The only king who is said in the chronicles to have borne the title of Meghavaṇṇābhaya at that time was Goṭhābhaya, the father of Mahāsena. His parentage is not given in any source. . He, and its two predecessors, came to Anurādhapura from Rohaṇa country. They are said to be from the Lambakaṇṇa clan. Goṭhābaya was probably the son of Sirināga II.",

Two Brāhmī inscriptions are below the drip-line of the cave, one in the earliest form of that script and the other of about the 1st century A.D. Near the north end of the embankment of the small village reservoir is a second cave containing Brāhmī inscriptions. To the south of the temple-cave, separated from it by a paddy-field, is another hillock with ancient caves on the slope. In five of them are Brāhmī records. On a boulder in front of the modern temple is an inscription of about the 2nd century. The present inscription is on a rock at the northern end of the village reservoir, behind the huge boulder containing the vihāra-cave. It is seven lines long in a script of the sixth or seventh century, from the reign of Moggallāna II (Daḷa Mugalan, ascended to the throne in 537 according to Geiger).\nIt is a private document and records that certain individuals freed themselves from slavery in the monastery of the place. Numerous short epigraphs of the period between the 5th and the 8th centuries deal with the same subject.",

"abstractNote": "E.Z., vol.4, part 6, n°36, pp.273-285, 1943\nA fragment of an irregularly octagonal slab of inscribed stone, appearing from its shape to have originally formed a cross-bar of a railing, was unearthed in 1893 in one of the buildings of the group called L of the Abhayagiri at Anurādhapura. The dāgäba and monasic remains, referred to by the name of Abhayagiri in earlier archeological reports, should really be called Jetavanārāma. \nAt one end of the stone is a tenon and probably there was another at the other extremity, irregularly fractured. The stone has been inscribed on seven of its eight facets, with two lines on each face. \nThis stone is of the same variety of marble or limestone as that used in the sculptures of Amarāvatī and Nāgārjunakoṇḍa. This variety of stone is not found in Ceylon, but a few small pieces of sculpture in the same material and in the style characteristic of the Āndhra art, have been discovered at Anurādhapura and some other places in the Island. There is no doubt that they have been imported from the Āndhra country. But it seems that the inscription itself was engraved on the stone in Ceylon.\nThe script differs from the other ancient Sinhalese inscriptions of the 3rd or 4th century A.D. but has points of resemblance to the alphabet used in some of the inscriptions at Nāgārjunakoṇḍa. But in the language used, there is no visible foreign influence. Concerning the subject-matter, It is an edict issued in the first year of a king whose name is missing. It is probably dealing with doctrine regulations for the monks. Traces of the name Abagiri-mahavihara (Abhayagiri-mahāvihāra). The object of the edict was to regulate the ecclesiastical affairs of the ancient Sinhalese Buddhist Church. The fact that the edict was written on an imported stone in an outlandish script proves that the king who issued it did it under outside influence from South India. \nDuring the reign of Mahāsena’s father, Goṭhābhaya, the adherents of the Buddhist Vetulya School became prominent in Ceylon. The monks of the Mahāvihāra treated them as heretics and made the king banish them. They found asylum in South India. One of them, Saṁghamitta, became close to Mahāsena and converted him. As soon as Mahāsena ascended the throne, Saṁghamitta settled in the Abhayagiri monastery and persuaded the king that the monks of the Mahāvihāra were sinful. Mahāsena ordered the Mahāvihāra monks to accept the Vetulya teaching. But they resisted and had to leave for Rohaṇa. This record can be seen as Mahāsena’s attempt to regulate the beliefs of the Mahāvihāra monk due to a religious teacher coming from South India. Furthermore, the mention of the ‘Five-Great-Residences’ (an assembly gathered by Goṭhābhaya to discuss the Vetulya doctrine) and of the name ‘Vayatuḍala’ (probably a form of the word Vetulya) are another reasons to believe that this document is an edict from Mahāsena. Lastly, the stone was found in the precints of the Jetavanārāma vihāra, established by Mahāsena.",

The principal buildings of the monastery are a stūpa, a structure supported by massive stone pillars, buildings arranged on several terraces on the hillside. Passing the terraced site, the ground to the south and the east becomes rocky and among the huge granite boulder, there are 12 caves, partly artificial, used as dwelling-places by Buddhist hermits. About 750 ft to the south-west of the stūpa, there is a pond, the Kaludiyapokuṇa. \nThree inscriptions has been discovered. The earliest (A.S.I. n°431) belong to about the 7th century A.D. It is inscribed on a guardstone of the flight of steps at the southern entrance to the courtyard of the stūpa. It is now unlegible. The two other inscriptions are from the 9th and the 10th century A.D. and record respectively a donation to the monastery and regulations dealing with the monastery.",

It is the site of an ancient Buddhist monastery which was re-occupied in the Kandyan period after having been abandoned for centuries. Two rock-inscriptions have been discovered at that place. The earlier one is a short record of 3 lines from about the 4th century; the later and longer one is the present record. It is 7 lines long, written in a script which represents the transitional stage between the Brāhmī and the medieval Sinhalese. Till the 3rd or 4th century, the Brāhmī script in Ceylon was really close to the one in India. But, by about the 5th century, the alphabet in Ceylon took a distinctive turn and by the 8th was evolved a Sinhalese alphabet. The inscription come midway between these two dates.\nThe object of the record was to register the gift of some tanks and paddy fields to the ancient monastery on the site, called Bamaṇagiriya, by king Maha-Kumaratasa, identified with Kumāra-Dhātusena from the Mahāvaṁsa, who reigned nine years from 513 according to Geiger and from 570 according to Wicremasinghe.",

On this rock, there is a ruined stūpa, a few yards to the south of which the two epigraphs are incised.\nOne (A.S.I. n°449) consists of 5 lines. The document is not dated but it can be ascribed, on a paleographic ground, to the 5th century A.D., to a date somewhere between the reigns of Śrīmeghavarṇṇa (circa 362-389 A.D.) and Mahānāman (A.D. 409-31). The contents tell us that a certain individual named Sirinakayi deposited 100 kahāpaṇas, the accruing from which was to be given to the monks of the Devagiri monastery for the expenses connected with the vassa festival. Devagiri Vihāra was evidently the name of the monastery which existed on this rock. \nThe other one (A.S.I. n°450) is engraved immediately below n°449. The script is of the same type and both records may therefore belong to the same period. The contents tell us that a person named Niṭalaviṭiya Sivaya deposited 20 kahāpaṇas for the benefit of the Devagiri vihāra.",

"abstractNote": "E.Z., vol. 3, part 4, n°21, pp.212-226, 1931\nKataragama (Kājaragāma in Pāli) is one of the most celebrated places of pilgrimage in Ceylon to the Buddhists (the “sixteen great places” at which the Buddha sat in meditation during his third visit to the island) and to the Hindus (the abode of Skanda). It is one of the earliest settlements of the Sinhalese in the island. The shrine stands in the middle of a spacious enclosure within which there are an old bo-tree, a Buddhist image house and several minor shrines dedicated to Skanda’s wives and brother. An inscribed pillar stands in front of the image house (reign of Dappula V). A number of ancient stones are lying about the place but these have all been brought here from the grounds of the Kirivehera. \nThe Kirivehera dāgäba is about half a mile to the north. It is said to have been founded by Mahānāga (circa 3rd c. B.C). On some of the bricks fallen down from the dome there are Brāhmī letters of about the 1st c. B.C., inscribed as masons’ marks. There are two inscriptions near this stūpa, one on a slab 50ft to the south of the main entrance, the other on a slab lying on the pavement now broken into four fragments of which one is missing.\nThe former record is 5 lines long, engraved vertically, in the script of the 1st/2nd c. A.D. The contents tell us that a certain elder of the Buddhist Church, Nanda, enlarged the caitya and got the monks at Akujuka to construct the flight of steps at the four entrances. \nSlab-inscription of Mahindaḷimahana:\nThis slab has been broken in four fragments and one is missing. The other three are lying on the pavement of the Kirivehera. The full record is 13 lines long. It is not dated. The donor is Mahadaḷi Mahana raja (king Mahādāṭhika Mahānāga), son of Sarataraya (Siridhara Ayya). Mahādāṭhika Mahānāga must have been a local ruler. Perhaps he flourished in that unsettled period which followed the death of Mahānāman and was ended by the accession of Dhātusena (455-473 A.D), when the northern part of the island was under Tamil domination and provincial governors of the south had opportunity to proclaim themselves independent. It seems that the record registered a grant of land made for defraying the expenses connected with the ritual at the Maṅgala Mahācetiya at Kājaragāma (ancient name of the Kirivehera).",

There are two inscriptions on the rock. One is 25 ft to the east and contains only the name of the king, Śrīmeghavarṇṇa. The other one is about 8ft to the south. It is 17 lines long in a script that belongs to the latter half of the 4th century. This inscription is one of the longest belonging to the early centuries. It is dated in the 3rd year of Śrīmeghavarṇṇa, the son of Mahāsena. Meghavarṇṇa was the contemporary of the Indian emperor Samudragupta and is known as the monarch in whose reign the Tooth relic was brought to Ceylon during the 4th century. It records that a certain minister deposited some quantities of grain and beans with a guild in the northern quarter of the city. The capital should remain unspent and the interest should be utilized for providing meals to the monks of the Yahisapavata monastery (the ancient name of Tōṇigala ) during the vassa season of every year. The record also enumerates the different kinds of provisions that had to be supplied for the feeding of the monks.",

On the sea-beach in front of the rest-house, there is a cluster of gneiss boulders among which are several rock caverns. A few yards to the west of this main group of rocks, there is a small boulder and two or three yards in front of it is a second boulder. On the sloping side of the small boulder, sixteen stupas are carved in low relief. The present Sanskrit record is engraved to the left of this sculpture. It consists in 8 lines. The characters used belong to a script not known from any other document and some of them bear a close resemblance to the corresponding forms of the early Grantha alphabet of South India. From a paleographic point of view, this epigraph is later than the 5th and earlier than the 8th century, probably from the 7th century. It is the earliest Sanskrit inscription know in Ceylon. The record states the pious wish of the author that by the merit he has gained by making the representation of the stupas, he may become a Buddha in the future for the deliverance of suffering humanity. The Boddhisattva ideal and the use of Sanskrit language may justify the belief that the autor was of Mahāyāna tendencies.",

It consists of 2 lines with a representation of a scythe from the 2nd century. The record belongs to a king named Saba and registers a grant to the Ekadoraya monastery. The object of the grant is not stated, but as the record is placed on the embankment of the tank, it is obvious that it was the tank itself.",
