It relates the importance of reading single texts within an author's broader corpus, as well as how we read authors within a broader set of philosophical and theological traditions, both ancient and modern. Finally, the essay treats the dynamic role of intellect (nous) in Gregory's spiritual and theological vision.",

"abstractNote": "In John Behr’s edition of Gregory of Nyssa’s On the Human Image of God, he identifies Chapter 16 of the treatise as a pivotal connecting chapter connecting the first and second parts of the book – taking up again, as it were, the exposition of human creatures as made ‘in accordance with’ the divine image and likeness. In his response, Martin Laird argues that Chapter 16.9 consummates the organic development of the human as the ‘apex of creation and … the very image of God’. Moreover, Laird sees a connection between Chapter 15.3 and Chapter 16.9. Set off by several of Gregory’s apophatic markers, Chapter 15.3 presents the apophatic nature of the intellect which constitutes the key to understanding the key phrase in Chapter 16.9 that declares that ‘there is to be beheld in the human compound a share … of the divine’.",

After summarising Behr’s argument, I will show how these two features can be used to interpret On the Lights, an oration in the corpus of Gregory of Nyssa’s fellow Cappadocian, Gregory of Nazianzus. By responding thus, I hope to show the significance of Behr’s insight and approach for patristic studies more broadly.",

"abstractNote": "One of the unique contributions that John Behr makes in his volume on Gregory of Nyssa’s On the Human Image is how he locates Gregory within the larger theological-philosophical context of writing about creation, situating Gregory in a long strand of writing from Anaxagoras to Maximus the Confessor. In his response essay, Paul Blowers further investigates Gregory’s alignment with earlier (and later writers) and explores the question of Gregory’s potential idiosyncracies. Blowers weaves this discussion of Gregory into conversation with Behr’s other writings about anthropology and with the interrelated concerns of Christology, cosmology and eschatology. Through this, Blowers comes to highlight the central inseparability of protology and eschatology in Behr’s approach to Gregory’s thought: we only come to a true contemplation of human nature ‘from the end’, as an only-then realizable eschatological and christological reality.",

Appreciative of the perceptive care with which Behr follows the sometimes dizzying tracks of Gregory’s thought, Ludlow also raises questions about Behr’s comparison of the Human Image with the Timaeus, especially in the context of the similar oft-made comparisons of Gregory’s On the Soul and the Resurrection with Plato’s Phaedo. Finally, Ludlow highlights the particular challenges of translating Gregory’s work, especially as we think about the differences between translating ancient texts for modern scholars versus the kinds of audiences whom Gregory would have been aiming to reach.",

"abstractNote": "In this response essay to John Behr’s Gregory of Nyssa: On the Human Image of God, Rowan Williams highlights Gregory’s exposition of the complex account of nous and its meaning in relation to sensory embodiment. Nous, in Gregory’s treatise, is the presence of unified divine activity in the diversity of creation. Created nous, in turn, refers to how the creature harmonizes a diversity of experiences and is thus intrinsic to the life of the senses. Its immateriality and ‘non-locatability’ suggest that it cannot be described as a faculty of the intellect or soul but rather exists as the body’s responsive and coherent life. Several implications follow: some concerning physical growth and the unfinished character of human life, other questions about the differentiation of the sexes, and still others concerning the intricacies of unity and identity in the divine nature. Through these intersections, Gregory’s writing opens up key lines of inquiry for modern theological anthropology, not least the possibility of seeing anew contemporary questions about human consciousness and the relation of the human creature’s divine imaging to intelligible communication and speech.",

All three were acquainted with Philo’s writings but the way in which they exploit Philonic material differs. In his homilies on the creation account, Basil uses Philo’s De opificio mundi as a source among others. Gregory of Nyssa employs Philo the most but he shows an ambiguous attitude towards him. On the one hand, he criticizes Philo’s doctrine of the divine Logos, observing a relationship between Philo’s thought and the views of his adversary Eunomius. On the other hand, he takes over Philonic interpretations and incorporates them in his own exegesis. In all likelihood Gregory of Nazianze was familiar with Philo’s treatises but there are no clear borrowings in his orations.",

"abstractNote": "This study offers a comparative analysis of the symbolism of the soul’s ascent in Gregory of Nyssa’s De vita Moysis and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola’s Oratio. Rather than attempting to establish a linear or exclusive dependence, it focuses on a series of Mosaic themes that articulate a dynamic conception of perfection in both authors. Beginning with Moses as a paradigm of virtuous life, the paper examines the shared anthropology of desire underlying Nyssen’s notion of unending progress and Pico’s sacra ambitio. It then traces the ordered sequence of symbols as it develops in Gregory’s treatise: light and darkness, the mountain of the knowledge of God, Jacob’s ladder, the tabernacle, the eagle, death as consummation, and divine friendship. Through the interplay of these symbols both thinkers configure spiritual growth as an ever-deepening participation in divine unity and truth. Particular attention is given to integration of the classical disciplines of the ancient philosophical curriculum within the Mosaic itinerary, as well as to the conception of truth as gradually apprehensible but ultimately inexhaustible. The paper concludes by pondering the results of the comparative study and reflecting on Pico’s way of assimilating the wide variety of sources in his project of philosophical concord.",

"abstractNote": "The purpose of the present doctoral dissertation is an in-depth study of the gender-related views of the Cappadocian Father Gregory of Nyssa, situated within a historical and theological framework that transcends his own era—past and future alike. This central theme opens multiple avenues for examining the question of gender: from mythology and antiquity to philosophy and dramatic poetry; from the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christian traditions to theology and contemporary feminist thought. At the core of the present research stands the female sex—woman or the feminine—around whose existence, status, role, and embodied reality a multifaceted, multilayered, intersectional, and interdisciplinary dialectic has remained alive through the centuries. The dissertation’s content is visibly unevenly oriented toward the two sexes, with the majority of its specific problematics concerning the ways in which woman and the feminine are perceived, managed, approached, and understood. This imbalance arises as a consequence of one single diachronic stereotype: that woman differs from man and constitutes an inferior, lesser, and problematic version of the latter.Gregory of Nyssa’s views are examined within the historical and theological context of the issue of gender differentiation within the human race and are placed within the historical and theological trajectory that begins with the mythology of ancient peoples and extends to the radical positions of contemporary Christian feminist theologians. The aim of this theological and historical contextualization of the central theme was the working hypothesis that Gregory of Nyssa both knows and, to a certain extent, adopts androcentric and patriarchal interpretations of reality and of anthropology. From this perspective, the way he conceives, perceives, understands, interprets, and articulates matters of gender acquires a new dynamism, is evaluated differently, opens new dialectical trajectories, and leads to different conclusions. Undoubtedly, the gender-related views of this fourth-century Cappadocian Father transcend the already broad boundaries of Christian theology, extend into philosophy, and interact with Platonic and Neoplatonic currents. The dissertation is divided into five (5) levels, which sequentially examine: gender concepts prior to Gregory of Nyssa’s era; approaches to gender in East and West up to the fourth century; theological anthropology and the sexes in Gregory of Nyssa’s thought; the place of his views within the patristic tradition; and their role in the effort to construct a robust feminist theology today. Each of these levels expands toward different extensions of the central and secondary problematics, with the aim of covering as deeply and as extensively as possible how the Cappadocian Father understands gender theologically. Certainly, the present dissertation does not aspire to function as a “handbook” of gender theology, but rather to constitute an informative study for readers who wish to gain deeper knowledge of the development of gender concepts and to reposition themselves within contemporary dialectic, having engaged with the original, distinctive, and innovative thought of Gregory of Nyssa. In our view, labels applied to theology (such as “patriarchal theology,” “feminist theology,” “liberation theology,” etc.) that are chosen to determine the teleological perspective of a theological line and to serve a commitment to the prevalence of an ideological objective cannot be adopted, because—regardless of their dogmatic accuracy or their traditionalist or radical point of departure—they clash with the ethical demand proper to theology, transforming the Church’s soteriological purpose into a means for serving other aims lacking an ecclesiological foundation. By contrast, other designations that simply indicate an emphasis on the study of a soteriological aspect of theology—such as Eucharistic theology, ecumenical and missiological theology, the theology of otherness, border theology, the theology of compassion, of love, of mercy, and so forth—are appropriate, because they do not deviate from the Church’s ecclesiological and soteriological purpose. The research question concerns whether Gregory of Nyssa is merely an isolated and solitary voice of his time that can be read in an emancipated manner apart from the Christian context of the first millennium and be utilized within a committed theology of gender, or whether he belongs to the choir of the Fathers of the Church—a fact that dictates studying him within the context of Sacred Tradition. The dissertation concludes with the author-researcher’s findings, in which emphasis is placed on questions and reflections that may prove helpful to those who have an interest in this subject.",

"abstractNote": "This article reexamines the notion of ‘authority’ in the Eternal Relations of Authority and Submission debate in light of what the author calls ‘pro-Nicene authority theology’. The article suggests that the modern debate’s emphasis on God’s will departs in some ways from the pro-Nicene way of forwarding the Son’s and Spirit’s equality with the Father, as shown in a couple of key passages in Gregory of Nyssa. The modern tendency is to reason from oneness of nature and being to oneness of authority. The pro-Nicenes, however, reasoned in the reverse—from an identity of authority to an identity of nature and being—on the basis of an ontological kind of unity that exists between authority and nature.",
