"abstractNote": "Measuring activities and postures is an important area of research in ubiquitous computing, human-computer interaction, and personal health informatics. One approach that researchers use to collect large amounts of labeled data to develop models for activity recognition and measurement is asking participants to self-report their daily activities. Although participants can typically recall their sequence of daily activities, remembering the precise start and end times of each activity is significantly more challenging. ACAI is a novel, context-assisted Activity Annotation Inttivity Annotation Interface that enables participants to efficiently label their activities by accepting or adjusting system-generated activity suggestions while explicitly expressing uncertainty about temporal boundaries. We evaluated ACAI using two complementary studies: a usability study with 11 participants and a two-week, free-living study with 14 participants. We compared our activity annotation system with the current gold-standard methods for activity recall in health sciences research: 24PAR and its computerized version, ACT24. Our system reduced annotation time and perceived effort while significantly improving data validity and fidelity compared to both standard human-supervised and unsupervised activity recall approaches. We discuss the limitations of our design and implications for developing adaptive, human-in-the-loop activity recognition systems used to collect self-report data on activity.",

"abstractNote": "Microinteraction ecological momentary assessment (μEMA) is a type of EMA that uses single-question prompts on a smartwatch to collect real-world self-reports. Smaller-scale studies show that μEMA yields higher response rates than EMA for up to 4 weeks. In this paper, we evaluated μEMA's longitudinal engagement in a 12-month study. Each participant completed EMA surveys (one smartphone prompt/hour for 96 days in 4-day bursts) and μEMA surveys (four smartwatch prompts/hour for the 270 days). Using data from 177 participants (1.37 million μEMA and 14.9K EMA surveys), we compared engagement across three groups: those who completed 12 months of EMA data collection(Completed), those who voluntarily withdrew after six months of EMA data collection (Withdrew), and those unenrolled by staff after six months of poor EMA response rates (Unenrolled). Compared to EMA, unenrolled participants were 2.25 times, those who withdrew were 1.65 times, and completed participants were 1.53 times more likely to answer μEMA prompts (p < 0.001). Regardless of response rates, |μEMA was perceived as less burdensome than EMA (p < 0.001). These results suggest μEMA is a viable method for intensive longitudinal data collection, particularly for participants who find EMA unsustainable.",

"abstractNote": "Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is an approach to collect self-reported data repeatedly on mobile devices in natural settings. EMAs allow for temporally dense, ecologically valid data collection, but frequent interruptions with lengthy surveys on mobile devices can burden users, impacting compliance and data quality. We propose a method that reduces the length of each EMA question set measuring interrelated constructs, with only modest information loss. By estimating the potential information gain of each EMA question using question-answer prediction models, this method can prioritize the presentation of the most informative question in a question-by-question sequence and skip uninformative questions. We evaluated the proposed method by simulating question omission using four real-world datasets from three different EMA studies. When compared against the random question omission approach that skips 50% of the questions, our method reduces imputation errors by 15%-52%. In surveys with five answer options for each question, our method can reduce the mean survey length by 34%-56% with a real-time prediction accuracy of 72%-95% for the skipped questions. The proposed method may either allow more constructs to be surveyed without adding user burden or reduce response burden for more sustainable longitudinal EMA data collection.",

"abstractNote": "The Experience Sampling Method is used to collect participant self-reports over extended observation periods. These self-reports offer a rich insight into the individual lives of study participants by intermittently asking participants a set of questions. However, the longitudinal and repetitive nature of this sampling approach introduces a variety of concerns regarding the data contributed by participants. A decrease in participant interest and motivation may negatively affect study adherence, as well as potentially affecting the reliability of participant data. In this chapter, we reflect on a number of studies that aim to understand better participant performance with Experience Sampling. We discuss the main issues relating to participant data for longitudinal studies and provide hands-on recommendations for researchers to remedy these concerns in their own studies.",

"abstractNote": "Social Network Services (SNSs) evoke diverse affective experiences. While most are positive, many authors have documented both the negative emotions that can result from browsing SNS and their impact: Facebook depression is a common term for the more severe results. However, while the importance of the emotions experienced on SNSs is clear, methods to catalog them, and systems to detect them, are less well developed. Accordingly, this paper reports on two studies using a novel contextually triggered Experience Sampling Method to log surveys immediately after using Instagram, a popular image-based SNS, thus minimizing recall biases. The first study improves our understanding of the emotions experienced while using SNSs. It suggests that common negative experiences relate to appearance comparison and envy. The second study captures smartphone sensor data during Instagram sessions to detect these two emotions, ultimately achieving peak accuracies of 95.78% (binary appearance comparison) and 93.95% (binary envy).",

"abstractNote": "The Experience Sampling Method (ESM) is a popular research method found in many fields to gather rich insights into participants' thoughts, emotions, and daily routines near the moment they happen. During the last decade, many technologically advanced ESM tools emerged that combine manually entered self-reports with automatically collected data from device sensors. In fact, it became difficult to keep track of them. We compiled a survey of ESM and its tools addressing technological capabilities for developers, study design opportunities for study administrators, and answering usability for study participants. It comprises data from 30 systems, applications, and toolkits, which are used for ESM studies. We present our results on the current state of the art from these main user perspectives, list general shortcomings, and give recommendations for future ESM tools.",

"abstractNote": "Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a self-report method that involves intensive longitudinal assessment of behavior and environmental conditions during everyday activities. EMA has been used extensively in health and clinical psychology to investigate a variety of health behaviors, including substance use, eating, medication adherence, sleep, and physical activity. However, it has not been widely implemented in behavior analytic research. This is likely an example of the empirically based skepticism with which behavioral scientists view self-report measures. We reviewed studies comparing electronic, mobile EMA (mEMA) to more objective measures of health behavior to explore the validity of mEMA as a measurement tool, and to identify procedures and factors that may promote the accuracy of mEMA. We identified 32 studies that compared mEMA to more objective measures of health behavior or environmental events (e.g., biochemical measures or automated devices such as accelerometers). Results showed that the correspondence rates varied considerably across individuals, behavior, and studies (agreement rates ranged from 1.8%–100%), and no unifying variables could be identified across the studies that found high correspondence. The findings suggest that mEMA can be an accurate measurement tool, but further research should be conducted to identify procedures and variables that promote accurate responding.",

"abstractNote": "The Experience Sampling Method (ESM) is used by scientists from various disciplines to gather insights into the intra-psychic elements of human life. Researchers have used the ESM in a wide variety of studies, with the method seeing increased popularity. Mobile technologies have enabled new possibilities for the use of the ESM, while simultaneously leading to new conceptual, methodological, and technological challenges. In this survey, we provide an overview of the history of the ESM, usage of this methodology in the computer science discipline, as well as its evolution over time. Next, we identify and discuss important considerations for ESM studies on mobile devices, and analyse the particular methodological parameters scientists should consider in their study design. We reflect on the existing tools that support the ESM methodology and discuss the future development of such tools. Finally, we discuss the effect of future technological developments on the use of the ESM and identify areas requiring further investigation.",

"abstractNote": "Ecological Momentary Assessments (i.e., EMA, repeated assessments in daily life) are widespread in many fields of psychology and related disciplines. Yet, little knowledge exists on how differences in study designs and samples predict study compliance and dropout—two central parameters of data quality in (micro-)longitudinal research. The current meta-analysis included k = 477 articles (496 samples, total N = 677,536). For each article, we coded the design, sample characteristics, compliance, and dropout rate. The results showed that on average EMA studies scheduled six assessments per day, lasted for 7 days, and obtained a compliance of 79%. Studies with more assessments per day scheduled fewer assessment days, yet, the number of assessments did not predict compliance or dropout rates. Compliance was significantly higher in studies providing financial incentives. Otherwise, design or sample characteristics had little effects. We discuss the implications of the findings for planning, reporting, and reviewing EMA studies.",

"abstractNote": "There is widespread public and academic interest in understanding the uses and effects of digital media. Scholars primarily use self-report measures of the quantity or duration of media use as proxies for more objective measures, but the validity of these self-reports remains unclear. Advancements in data collection techniques have produced a collection of studies indexing both self-reported and log-based measures. To assess the alignment between these measures, we conducted a pre-registered meta-analysis of this research. Based on 106 effect sizes, we found that self-reported media use correlates only moderately with logged measurements, that self-reports were rarely an accurate reflection of logged media use and that measures of problematic media use show an even weaker association with usage logs. These findings raise concerns about the validity of findings relying solely on self-reported measures of media use.",
