            "abstractNote": "Along with its methodological development, authorship analysis has expanded in\nscope to new application areas like authorship profiling and computational\nsociolinguistics as well as conventional ones like authorship attribution. For\nthese new applications, providing a new interpretation of text through the textual\ncharacteristics is as important as improving the classification performance be-\ntween the authors, which was the aim in conventional applications. Lexical in-\ndicators were one of the most frequently used characteristics in conventional\napplications as they were effective at discriminating between authors, but most\nof the previously used indicators were based on the frequencies of morphemes,\nand reflected only limited aspects of the writing styles of the authors. In order to\nuse these types of characteristics for new applications, we need to develop indi-\ncators reflecting other various aspects of the authors writing styles that are useful\nfor interpretation as well as classification. As such, we propose the use of two\ntypes of co-occurrence-based indicators, namely network indicators and a\nco-occurrence-based concentration indicator in this field. Experimental results\nusing the Aozora Bunko corpora, along with qualitative analyses, showed that our\nindicators were very effective at capturing aspects of the styles of the authors as\nwell as for improving the classification performance. We concluded that our\nindicators successfully supplement previously used indicators and are useful for\nvarious new applications in authorship analysis.",

            "abstractNote": "This paper is intended to begin a discussion about the need for a future text\nanalysis software tool to model a number of aspects of text analysis as it is prac-\ntised by critics who are not computing humanists, and that have been barely\nconsidered by most developers. It begins by putting this analysis in the context\nof Douglas Englebart’s famous model of computer–human interaction expressed\noriginally by his\nAugment\nsystem. It continues by examining a number of\nexamples of how technology (ranging from 3 x 5 cards to topic maps) is\ncurrently used to support critical analyses, and points out that an important\naspect of the critical process, which is recognized at least in part by the 3 x 5 card model but not by mainstream humanities computing methods, is the sense\nof critical analysis as a process rather than merely the presentation of a finished\nproduct. The paper finishes by examining some of the underlying concepts\npresent in text-analysis tools used within the social sciences that attempt to deal\nwith this temporal aspect of analysis, and proposes a need to examine the real\npractices of critics in the light of these issues",

            "abstractNote": "Pliny is a piece of software that is meant to stimulate discussion within the Digital\nHumanities (DH) about how tools might be built that could find greater accep-\ntance within the wider humanities community; something that has eluded the\nDH to date. Unlike many other tool projects within the DH, which are meant to\nshow new and novel ways to apply technology to transform scholarly practice,\nPliny is designed to support the act of\nconventional\nscholarly interpretation. It is\nmeant to be a tool that blends so well into the task of the development of an\ninterpretation, as scholars actually conventionally practice it, as to be almost\ninvisible. In this, it follows some of the H-LAM/T design principles of Douglas\nEnglebart, some of whose principles can be seen in software such as the word\nprocessor. In this article, several of the principle elements of conventional scho-\nlarly practice are described—centred on the act of annotation, notetaking, and\nthe using of these notes as the basis for exploring ideas that emerge from working\nwith the objects of study. Pliny’s design is then discussed in the context of how\naspects of its design—its\naffordances\n—support the scholar who is working with\nthese elements. In particular, it illustrates an approach to the modelling of notes\nand associated ideas at the time when they are still largely un- or only partially\nstructured.",

            "abstractNote": "One of the principle signs that speech is a complex system is the nonlinear\narrangement of frequencies of variants in linguistic survey data. When the\ncounts are charted by frequency, they form an asymptotic hyperbolic curve\n(A-curve) at every scale of analysis. The shape of the curve is sensitive to\nsample size: a small sample is unlikely to show an A-curve. So, too, categoriza-\ntion: too large a number of categories makes the data appear linear because of the\nsmall number of tokens in each category, while allowing too few categories, such\nas the two data points from binary categories, also gives us a line, not a curve. The\nA-curve can only be observed when the number of categories into which the data\nare sorted lies between these two extremes. Common practice in dialectology and\nsociolinguistics has been to establish a small number of possible categories such\nas phonemes for pronunciation, or to notice only the few most frequently occur-\nring variants and to ignore the rest. Such methods cannot address the underlying\ncomplexity of the data. In this essay, we discuss the Gini coefficient, used in\neconomics, as a means to measure optimal nonlinearity. In an experiment where\npronunciation data from survey research on the American English vowel system\nare analyzed in various subsamples, we demonstrate that A-curves do exist in the\ndata in all cases, and we establish parameters for the interaction of sample size\nand number of categories in the design of valid and reliable experiments.",

            "creators": [],
            "abstractNote": "The focus of this article is a system for visualizing social network data derived\nfrom a TEI-encoded corpus of texts. It describes the collection of biographies\nof historical Chinese Buddhist monks, which constitutes this corpus and the\nTEI markup, in particular the innovative concept of a ‘nexus-point’ that was\noriginally applied to them with the goal of producing GIS-like visualizations [see\nBingenheimer, M., Hung, J.-J., and Wiles, S. (2009). Markup meets GIS -\nVisualizing the ‘Biographies of Eminent Buddhist Monks’. In Banissi, E.\net al.\n(eds),\nProceedings of Information Visualization IV 2009\n. IEEE Computer Society:\n550–4.]. Over the course of this work, it became clear that a data set of\nnexus-points could be derived from this markup which would support a repre-\nsentation of the social network which can be inferred from the corpus. The\nnature of this social network is explored and some interesting preliminary\napplications are suggested. The software architecture which supports the visual-\nization, based on the P\nREFUSE\ntoolkit, is introduced. Finally, the scope for the\nfuture development of the corpus and the system are discussed, and some\navenues for potentially fruitful analysis are suggested. Throughout the article,\nit is argued that the methods and techniques employed here are applicable\nwell beyond the present context. In describing this project of social network\nvisualization, it is demonstrated that a well-marked-up TEI corpus can, with\nvery little additional technical overhead and using the same markup, serve as\nthe basis for multiple representations of the same data.",

            "abstractNote": "This article explores building blocks in extant and emerging social media toward\nthe possibilities they offer to the scholarly edition in electronic form, positing that\nwe are witnessing the nascent stages of a new ‘social’ edition existing at the\nintersection of social media and digital editing. Beginning with a typological\nformulation of electronic scholarly editions, activities common to humanities\nscholars who engage with texts as expert readers are considered, noting that\nmany methods of engagement both reflect the interrelated nature of\nlong-standing professional reading strategies and are social in nature; extending\nthis frame work, the next steps in the scholarly edition’s development in its\nincorporation of social media functionality reflect the importance of traditional\nhumanistic activities and workflows, and include collaboration, incorporating\ncontributions by its readers and re-visioning the role of the editor away\nfrom that of ultimate authority and more toward that of facilitator of reader\ninvolvement. Intended to provide a ‘toolkit’ for academic consideration, this\ndiscussion of the emerging social edition points to new methods of textual en-\ngagement in digital literary studies and is accompanied by two integral, detailed\nappendices, published in\nDigital Humanities Quarterly\nunder the title ‘Pertinent\ndiscussions toward modeling the\nsocial\nedition: Annotated bibliographies’ (http://\nwww.digitalhumanities.org/dhq/vol/6/1/000111/000111.html): one addressing\nissues pertinent to online reading and interaction, and another on social net-\nworking tools.",

            "abstractNote": "Using Rome as its case study, this article explores the interrelationship between modeling, maps, representation, and digital reconstruction. Discussions of digital cultural heritage often devolve into questions surrounding realism and visual seduction. While worthy topics for serious thought, such a line of inquiry overlooks the fundamental strength of reconstructing in the digital world: the freedom to create models and bend representational boundaries. Reconstructions and endeavors that attempt to represent the past require design within constraints. Similar to the design of two‐dimensional maps, the creation of a three‐dimensional model demands the same choices of symbology. The task is not to represent every aspect of what might have been; rather it is to use representational techniques rooted in a geographic coordinate system to highlight only the most important information for the task at hand—to use design techniques to reduce the complexity of the ontological reality to create a working tinker‐toy model with which and within which one can experiment.",

These libraries assume that data needed to produce the desired overlay can be loaded into memory all-at-once, making it difficult to visualize large datasets. Furthermore, while image tiles automatically adjust in resolution as the map zooms in or out, the overlay resolution remains constant; this greatly limits multi-scale exploration of data, as the resolution must be fixed either for macro- (e.g., state-level) or micro- (e.g., block-level) observation.</p>\n<p>The goal of Polymaps is to better support rich, large-scale data overlays on interactive maps by extending the tile metaphor to vector graphics: in addition to standard image tiles, Polymaps supports vector tiles that are rendered with SVG. The vector geometry is loaded as <a href=\"http://geojson.org/\">GeoJSON</a> via asynchronous <tt>XMLHttpRequest</tt>; <em>Point</em> geometry objects are rendered as SVG <tt>circle</tt> elements, <em>Polygon</em>s as <tt>path</tt>s, and so on. By loading geometry at known tile boundaries, requests can be issued efficiently on-demand by the client, and responses trivially cached on the server. When the user zooms in, geometry can be seamlessly refined to show greater detail, while on zoom out, geometry can be simplified to improve performance.</p>",
