            "extra": "A brief review of research in agricultural vehicle guidance technologies is presented. The authors propose the conceptual framework of an agricultural vehicle autonomous guidance system, and then analyze its device characteristics. This paper introduces navigation sensors, computational methods, navigation planners and steering controllers. Sensors include global positioning systems (GPS), machine vision, dead-reckoning sensors, laser-based sensors, inertial sensors and geomagnetic direction sensors. Computational methods for sensor information are used to extract features and fuse data. Planners generate movement information to supply control algorithms. Actuators transform guidance information into changes in position and direction. A number of prototype guidance systems have been developed but have not yet proceeded to commercialization. GPS and machine vision fused together or one fused with another auxiliary technology is becoming the trend development for agricultural vehicle guidance systems. Application of new popular robotic technologies will augment the realization of agricultural vehicle automation in the future.             "abstractNote": "This paper presents an approach to count mango fruit from daytime images of individual trees for the purpose of a machine vision based estimation of mango crop yield. Images of mango trees were acquired over a three day period, 3 weeks before commercial harvest occurred. The fruit load of each of fifteen trees was manually counted, and these trees were imaged on four sides. Correlation between tree counts and manual image counts was strong (R2 = 0.91 for two sides). A further 555 trees were imaged on one side only. For these images, pixels were segmented into fruit and background pixels using colour segmentation in the RGB and YCbCr colour ranges and a texture segmentation based on adjacent pixel variability. Resultant blobs were counted to obtain a per image mango count. Across a set of 555 images (with mean ± standard deviation of fruit per tree of 32.3 ± 14.3), a linear regression, (y = 0.582x − 0.20, R2 = 0.74, bias adjusted root mean square error of prediction = 7.7) was achieved on the machine vision count relative to the image count. The algorithm decreased in effectiveness as the number of fruit on the tree increased, and when imaging conditions involved direct sunlight. Approaches to reduce the impact of fruit load and lighting conditions are discussed.",

            "abstractNote": "Visible-near infrared reflectance characteristics were examined for four varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Semillon and Shiraz) of grape vine grape (Vitis vinifera) in a southern Australian vineyard. Reflectance measurements over the range 400-900 nm were acquired in the field under solar illumination using a Lastek VNIR spectroradiometer. Both reflectance and first derivative spectra were tested at 2 nm intervals for differences between the four varieties and pairs of varieties showing greatest significance were established using a Tukey post hoc test. The field reflectance spectra showed greatest difference at the red edge ( 720 nm), followed by the green reflectance peak and its wings in the visible. Cabernet Sauvignon and Semillon were the most significantly different pair throughout the visible region, while the differences at the red edge were mainly attributed to Semillon. In the derivative spectra regions of significant difference were narrower and potentially attributable to chlorophyll content, leaf structure or water content. Cabernet Sauvignon differed most from the other varieties at approximately 512 nm and 580 nm.             "abstractNote": "The wine industry is important to Australia's economy. With the advances in remote sensing there has been increasing interest in its potential application for vineyard varietal, condition and health mapping. CASI (Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager) data was obtained over a vineyard in the Barossa Valley, South Australia in an attempt to discriminate between the grape cultivars (Vitis vinifera) , Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Statistical analysis of sample spectra from the two varieties in the CASI imagery showed that the significant differences in the visible region. Maximum likelihood classification was employed to map the two grape varieties present on the site. Classification was performed using 12 visible and near infrared CASI bands and repeated using a spectral subset of seven bands shown to be most significant in separating the varieties. Discrimination between Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz was successful with 91.5% of vine rows correctly classified.             "abstractNote": "The number of primary branches (those branches that arise directly from the rachis) and the total number of flowers were counted for inflorescences of Vitis vinifera L. cultivar Cabernet Sauvignon over a range of climates and a number of seasons as part of a yield prediction study. Regression analysis indicated that the number of primary branches per inflorescence exerted a strong control over the total number of flowers per inflorescence, with highly significant (P < 0.01) relationships explaining between 51 and 80% of the variation in flowers per inflorescence. Because the extent of primary branching is largely determined prior to grapevine buds entering dormancy, this strong functional association between branching and flower numbers, suggests that season-to-season differences in potential inflorescence size will be greatly affected by conditions during that phase of primordial differentiation in the previous growing season. A general tendency for the number of flowers per inflorescence to be positively related to other measures of vine fertility, supports this view. Lower orders of branching (secondary and tertiary) down to formation of individual flowers at budburst, also have the potential to influence eventual inflorescence size. As to the timing of such influences, we noted that increased severity of winter pruning significantly increased both flowers per inflorescence (by 9%) and the number of primary branches per inflorescence (by 21%). Such responses provide strong support for our contention that although the extent of primary branching is largely determined prior to grapevine buds entering dormancy, differentiation of new primary branches in Cabernet Sauvignon inflorescences continues to occur after the onset of dormancy.",

            "abstractNote": "Early forecasting of fruit orchard yield is important for market planning and for growers and exporters to plan labour, bins, storage and purchase of packing materials. Large variations in tree yield pose a challenge for accurate yield estimation. We evaluated a three-level systematic sampling procedure for unbiased estimation of fruit number for yield forecasts. In the Spring of 2009 we estimated the total number of fruit in several rows of each of 14 commercial fruit orchards growing apple (11 groves), kiwifruit (two groves), and table grapes (one grove) in central Chile. Survey times were 10–100 min for apples (depending on vigour), 85 min for the table grapes, and 85 and 150 min for the kiwifruit. During harvest in the Fall, the fruit were counted to obtain the true number. Yields ranged from lows of several thousand (grape bunches), to highs of more than 40 000 fruit (apples, kiwifruit). Absolute true errors (defined as the absolute difference between the estimate and the true value, divided by the true value) were less than 5% in six orchards, between 5 and 10% in a further five orchards and 13% in one orchard. In two apple orchards we obtained absolute true errors of about 20%. Error analysis based on systematic sub-sampling across each sampling stage was used to determine how to distribute sampling effort to achieve a total coefficient of error of 10%. We discuss the extension of the procedure for yield estimation at the full orchard scale for any target precision.",

            "abstractNote": "Predictive mapping of within-vineyard winegrape yield, quality, and ripeness, using high spatial resolution optical remote sensing, relies upon relationships between image-derived canopy vigour metrics and fruit composition and yield components. Regular image acquisition of two contrasting vineyard sites enabled a temporal analysis of variation in these relationships. An image processing algorithm was developed to segment vineyard imagery into single grapevine objects. Various remote-sensing vegetation indices, calculated for each grapevine object, revealed that indices sensitive to high vegetation densities performed significantly better at predicting fruit composition and yield elements than the commonly used normalized difference vegetation index. The strength and direction of correlations between canopy vigour and season-end fruit descriptors varied by phenological stage and vineyard type. The ability of optical remote sensing to successfully map within-vineyard winegrape composition and yield may vary depending upon vineyard characteristics, management, and temporal variability in overall vineyard production.",
