Although research examining the link between perceptions of school climate and student outcomes has increased, no research has examined how students with disabilities, particularly those with EBD, perceive school climate, and the relation of those perceptions to outcomes including peer victimization and mental health problems. The current study found that in comparison with students without disabilities (SWOD), students with EBD (SWEBD) reported significantly lower perceptions of school climate and significantly higher rates of mental health problems and peer victimization. Perceptions of school climate and mental health were inversely associated with reports of victimization among both SWOD and SWEBD. Changing practices within schools so that vulnerable and traumatized children are better understood and more compassionately served is a goal shared by many school professionals, yet schools remain poorly equipped to address the needs of these children. Any number of school‐based programs have the potential to benefit children with an elevated risk for academic difficulties and mental health disorders, although questions remain as to which programs are most promising, effective, and sustainable. Questions also remain about which programs best serve diverse populations and which have potential to reach the largest number of children, including those who do not outwardly manifest behaviors consistent with an underlying disorder but nonetheless require support. In this review, we take stock of existing programs used in schools to address the social, emotional, and academic needs of children with trauma histories. We summarize components of a various trauma‐focused programs, categorized as: (a) individual and group‐based approaches, (b) classroom‐based approaches, and (c) school‐wide approaches. For each category, we review and comment on the state and quality of research findings and provide illustrative examples from the literature to show how programs address trauma in the school context. Findings of the review suggest that empirical evidence currently favors individual and group‐based approaches, although classroom‐based and school‐wide programs may be better positioned for integration, access to services, and sustainability. To effectively address this, programmatic and policy responses need to be underpinned by rigorous evidence. Drawing on our experience conducting a systematic review of post-migration risk factors for mental disorder among asylum seekers and our appraisal of related systematic reviews, this paper discusses four challenges facing the field: (1) The reliance on Western conceptions of mental health. (2) The investigation, to date, of a relatively narrow range of potential risk factors. (3) The lack of consistency in the measurement and reporting of risk factor variables. (4) The use of the legal term ‘asylum seeker’ to define study populations. However, implementing school‐based mental health services can be much more complex than it may seem. Some people question whether schools are an appropriate setting to offer mental health services and supports, while others, who might otherwise agree with the importance of school‐based mental health, do not believe that funding for these services or programs should come out of educational budgets. With mental health services for school‐age children being offered in clinical settings, are these supports necessary in schools? If schools already have school counselors and school psychologists who can address the social and emotional challenges of students, why should schools hire additional personnel to provide mental health supports? Much literature explores the education of Puerto Ricans on the Island and in the Metropolis from a social, historical, and political perspective. In fact, the work of the school has been mentioned within the scholarship of critical pedagogues. However, no previous projects described the lived experiences of those involved with the project's site and how they could be examined from the Marxist, neo-Marxist, colonial/postcolonial, and/or feminist theoretical framework/lens. The philosophic/qualitative project tradition of phenomenology was used in undertaking this project. Semi-structured conversations/interviews and their respective transcripts were used as the main data source of this project. Also included are brief biographical “context stories” to provide a context for the lives (and struggles) of the participants. The project's findings reveal that this Puerto Ricancentric high school serves as a sanctuary for its students. Major themes/sub-themes that emerge from the participant/curious scholar conversations include those such as “pedagogy of care and love,” “school as family,” “teacher as mentor,” and “school as a safe cultural space.” Other major themes are those of “pride in Puerto Rican identity and culture,” “fear of urban displacement,” and “education as liberation.” The project's conclusions focus on “personal liberation as journey,” the future possibilities and hopes for the high school, the meanings that I have attached to the lived experiences of the various project participants, and new theoretical paradigms concerning the education of Puerto Ricans in the Metropolis/United States. Drawing from an urban sanctuary school framework, this study works to center the voices of low-income students of color from an urban high school in California, who have historically faced school alienation and academic challenges, to describe their notions of academic expectations held by their teachers. The centrality of student voices and ethnographic descriptions of the school illuminate a moral dialogue that can assist school leaders in challenging ineffective school structures. Through examination of 10 church sanctuary resolutions and 10 school district resolutions from across the country, the study inquires about the extent to which sanctuary school districts and churches similarly provide not only material but also symbolic protection for undocumented individuals and families. Moreover, this particular school was founded by students and teachers over 30 years ago as a direct response to pedagogically and psychologically colonizing large comprehensive high schools in a major urban school district. According to students, a school becomes a sanctuary when there are four essential components in place. These sanctuary-like attributes include multiple definitions of caring relations between students and their teachers, the importance of a familial-like school environment, the necessity of psychologically and physically safe school spaces, and allowing students a forum in which they are encouraged to affirm their racial/ethnic pride.
