"note": "<p><strong>Levi, Giovanni. “On Microhistory,” in <em>New Perspectives on Historical Writing</em>, ed. Peter Burke, 2nd edition. University Park: Pennsylvania State University Press, 2001.</strong></p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>According to Giovanni Levi’s chapter, “On Microhistory,” in <em>New Perspectives on Historical Writing</em>, microhistory involves a reduction of scale in the object of analysis. However, that reduction is not merely to examine the pieces of a whole. That is to say, microhistory is not just a way of providing supporting evidence for a more generalized argument or framework. &nbsp;Instead, the value of microhistory lay in its “experimental purposes,” says Levi. He argues that “the unifying principle of all microhistorical research is the belief that microscopic observation will reveal factors previously unobserved.”[1]</p>\n<p>Microhistory, therefore, challenges the functionalist and mechanistic models of historical change by exposing the relationship “between normative systems and that freedom of action created for individuals by those spaces which always exist and by the internal inconsistencies which are both part of any system of norms and normative systems.”[2] Whereas a functionalist analysis explains forms of behavior by identifying their functions within a <em>coherent</em> social system, microhistory helps explain “strange or anomalous” behavior in ways that challenge the assumption of coherency: either by revealing the “hidden significance and consequently their fit with a [social] system; or, on the other hand, as a matter of discovering the social context in which an apparently anomalous or insignificant fact assumes meaning when the hidden incoherencies of an apparently unified social system are revealed.”[3]</p>\n<p>There are also stylistic facets of microhistory which appear to be of some import to Levi. Namely, that in microhistory the researcher’s point of view becomes “an intrinsic part of the account. The research process is explicitly described and the limitations of documentary evidence, the formulation of hypotheses and the lines of thought followed are no longer hidden away from the eyes of the uninitiated.”[4]</p>\n<div><br /><hr size=\"1\" />\n<div>\n<p>[1] Giovanni Levi, “On Microhistory,” in <em>New Perspectives on Historical Writing</em>, ed. Peter Burke, 2nd ed (University Park, Pa: Pennsylvania State University Press, 2001), 101; Levi says that “the most coherent attempt to date to interpret this experimental work” in microhistory is Jacques Revel’s article, “L’historie au ras du sol,” in Giovanni Levi, <em>Le pouvoir au village: histoire d’un exorciste dans le Piémont du XVIIe siècle</em> (Gallimard, 1989) Levi says that Revel “defines microhistory as an attempt to study the social not as an object invested with inherent properties, but as a set of shifting interrelationships existing between constantly adapting configuration” (p.114); See also Jacques Revel, <em>Jeux D’echelles: La Micro-analyse a L’experience (Hautes Etudes)</em> (Seuil, 1996).</p>\n</div>\n<div>\n<p>[2] Levi, “On Microhistory,” 109. Levi also acknowledges that although microhistory takes its origins in many respects from cultural anthropology (esp. Geertz), the latter discipline tends to ignore social differentiation, assuming that the symbols and rituals that define culture are universal across social lines. Microhistory, on the other hand, highlights social differences as an object of analysis that reveals how customs and symbols are not universally significant to all members of society.</p>\n</div>\n<div>\n<p>[3] Ibid., 111.</p>\n</div>\n<div>\n<p>[4] Ibid., 110.;&nbsp; A marvelous example of this treatment, where the investigation of the historian actually becomes part of the historical narrative can be found in Scott Reynolds Nelson, <em>Steel Drivin’ Man: John Henry, the Untold Story of an American Legend</em>, 1st ed. (New York: Oxford University Press, 2006).</p>\n</div>\n</div>",

New research in the latter has utilized microlevel sources (those that allow the researcher to track an individual life) to challenge long-accepted generalizations about which kinds of people did what where in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Atlantic. But, the author suggests, such research raises specific methodological challenges and epistemological caveats. The risk is that we may borrow some of the more attractive elements of microhistory—in particular, the chance to tell extraordinary stories about ordinary lives—without addressing the elements of research design that give rigor and weight to the most persuasive microhistorical studies. Can microhistorical evidence from the Atlantic world serve as a basis for explanatory as well as descriptive claims? The article explores this question by discussing the author's own attempts to use microhistorical inquiry to answer macrolevel questions about the origins and breadth of anti-imperialism in the interwar British Caribbean.",

"abstractNote": "This article argues that microhistory (the intensive historical investigation of a relatively small subject) has four distinct advantages over traditional macro-oriented social history: it is appealing to the general public, it is much closer to reality, it conveys personal experience directly and, with all the lines branching out from the event, person or community in the focus of the investigation, it points towards the general. Since too heavy reliance on either of these four characteristics can produce specific distortions of the microhistorical work, historians should attempt to reach a balance.",

"abstractNote": "This article discusses the new microhistory of the 1970s and 1980s in terms of the concept of exceptional typical, and contrasts the new microhistory to old microhistory, in which the relationship between micro and macro levels of phenomena was defined by means of the concepts of exceptionality and typicality. The focus of the essay is on Carlo Ginzburg’s method of clues, Walter Benjamin’s idea of monads, and Michel de Certeau’s concept of margins. The new microhistory is also compared with methodological discussions in the social sciences. In the mid-1970s concepts like the micro–macro link or the microfoundations of macrotheory were introduced in sociology and economics. But these largely worked in terms of the concepts of typicality or exceptionality, and this has proved to be problematic. Only historians have developed concepts that escape these and the older definitions of the micro–macro relationship; indeed, the “new microhistory” can best be described in terms of the notion of “exceptional typical.” The essay explores the meaning of this notion.",
