As writing programs integrate more digital writing work, students, teachers, and administrators face the rewards and challenges of assessing and evaluating multimodal and networked writing projects. Whether classroom-based or program-level; whether in first-year writing, technical communication, or writing-across-the-curriculum; whether formative or summative; and whether for purposes of placement, grading, self-study, or external reporting, digital writing complicates the processes and practices of assessment.\nThe chapters in Digital Writing Assessment & Evaluation place emphasis on assessment of digital writing—the methodological, technological, and ethical approaches for and issues involved with assessing multimodal, networked texts (and the student learning they represent). Authors address questions such as:\nHow do different approaches to assessing traditional writing (8 1/2 x 11 word-centric texts) port—or not—to the assessment of digital writing? What challenges and opportunities for assessment do multimodal, networked texts present to teachers, program administrators, state-wide organizations, etc.?\nWhat material and technological resources are needed when assessing digital writing and/or how might existing resources need to be modified?\nHow are processes and products of selection, collection, and reflection different (or not) with the multimodal affordances of digital technologies?\nHow do guidelines and outcomes of groups such as CCCC, NCTE, WPA, AAC&U, impact approaches to assessment? How might these guidelines and outcomes need to be revised to better address digital writing assessment?\nHow might the multimodal, networked affordances of digital writing affect issues of equity and access? How might groups often disenfranchised by more traditional assessment be impacted by digital writing assessment?\nHow might eportfolios be designed for showcasing the collaborative composing processes of multimodal and/or networked writing?\nBy what criteria should program administrators and instructors assess and select course-management and/or eportfolio systems?\nThe fourteen chapters are organized into four sections, addressing equity and assessment, classroom evaluation and assessment, multimodal evaluation and assessment, and program revisioning and program assessment.             "abstractNote": "A wiki was used as part of a blended learning approach to promote collaborative learning among students in a first year university statistics class. One group of students analysed a data set and communicated the results by jointly writing a practice report using a wiki. A second group analysed the same data but communicated the results in a practice report that they wrote individually. Both groups were taught the same material. The report was used for practice as a way to support student learning and was not submitted for assessment. Both approaches improved report writing knowledge and did not differ in the mark obtained on an individually written research report subsequently submitted for assessment. The wiki approach produced higher engagement with other students, cognitive engagement, and class attendance than the individual approach. Qualitative feedback suggested some drawbacks to using a wiki. Overall participation was also low with only 2 of the 22 wiki subgroups completing all components of the practice report. The present findings suggest that student engagement, but not performance on assessment, may be enhanced when a wiki is used to support learning in higher education.",

            "abstractNote": "Collaborative learning activities, based on constructivism, were applied within the introductory course on the Internet for the first year students of Computer science at the Faculty of Education. In the paper we present a form of wiki-supported collaborative learning followed by collaborative and peer assessment. We will make overview of the elements which indicate contributions of individual students to the project as well as their contribution to the process of collaboration. In order to evaluate how reliable are collaborative and peer assessment, we consider how the grades from wikis' assessment are related to the final grade of the course and to the grades of other learning activities.",

            "abstractNote": "This paper shows a new method for using Wikis, forums, and other web-based productivity tools in blended learning strategies [20][22] to promote the acquisition of competences in Higher education [4] while enhancing experiential learning of students [16] in social collaborative knowledge building scenarios. This methodology also facilitated the grading of student individual contributions in cooperative work, helping to detect any shortcomings that may prevent student active involvement in their learning process, allowing to conduct not only product evaluation but also process evaluation. Based upon previous successful experiences, the free, on-line software platform, TikiWiki CMS/Groupware, was selected to achieve this methodology. [5][6][10][11]. Students had to think about \"What's the 'type of contribution' that I'm going to make right now?\" before submitting new contributions in forums, comments, or document editions (either text or spreadsheet based). Each student's contribution type and size (in bytes) was stored in a log on the website, and could be queried, filtered, and exported for further analyses. The method was tested on an Environmental Sciences course, and its strengths and weaknesses are discussed in the paper. The method description includes a suggested process to convert student contributions (type and size) into numerical grades. However, the main potential of this method is not just final assessment for student accreditation, but serving data for tutorships with students along the process of the learning activities, in order to detect and revert whatever handicaps that prevented some students improving their contributions to the group work or cooperative learning in time\"(much prior to assignment submission to teacher). This preliminary study resulted in a three-times greater time investment by teachers. Further data needs to be collected to better estimate the true costs of this new method.",

In this increased era of collaboration, we have implemented a Web site, Chem-Wiki, to extend and facilitate students? collaboration outside of the lab. Using new Web technologies, students are able to interact with each other regardless of time or location. The Chem-Wiki model of Web-based lab reporting has proved well suited to increased team size and extended laboratory discussions. Now, each team in the organic chemistry laboratory at Northeastern Illinois University works collaboratively in writing a single Web-based lab report while still allowing their individual contributions to be tracked and reproduced. These Web-based lab reports are more dynamic than hard copy lab reports because they can be continually edited, updated, and monitored by group members in real time. This makes the lab report collaboration truly interactive. Ultimately, introducing this new reporting format has enhanced the ability of students to collaborate productively and create a dynamic, boundless, community of learning.",

            "abstractNote": "This essay discusses digital encoding both as a method of teaching close reading to undergraduates and as a technology that might help to reassess the terminology used in literary reading. Such praxis structured a textual encoding project designed for upper-level undergraduates who constructed an edition of “Laura’s Dream; or, the Moonlanders” by nineteenth-century poet Melesina Trench. The painstaking process of selecting bits of text and wrapping them with tags reframed reading as slow, iterative, and filled with formal choices. By using the Text Encoding Initiative’s broad-based humanities tag set, students reflected upon classical literary terms as well as TEI’s extensible vocabulary, considering how best to formalize an interpretive reading. Since most women poets of the period taught themselves poetics, Trench’s poem became a test case for whether alternate terminology might best describe her experimentation. Important discoveries included differences between the term “stanza” and TEI’s “line group” tag (<lg>), and between labeling figurative language with classical terms such as “metaphor” or with the “segment” tag, marking self-identified tropes threaded throughout the poem (<seg ana=“visuality”>). As they tagged and then color-coded their readings, students gained the editorial prowess and creativity to develop interpretive language beyond rote or prescriptive terminology.",
