"abstractNote": "This is a study to quantify U.S. wind power at 80 m (the hub height of large wind turbines) and to investigate whether winds from a network of farms can provide a steady and reliable source of electric power. Data from 1327 surface stations and 87 soundings in the United States for the year 2000 were used. Several methods were tested to extrapolate 10-m wind measurements to 80 m. The most accurate, a least squares fit based on twice-a-day wind profiles from the soundings, resulted in 80-m wind speeds that are, on average, 1.3–1.7 m/s faster than those obtained from the most common methods previously used to obtain elevated data for U.S. wind power maps, a logarithmic law and a power law, both with constant coefficients. The results suggest that U.S. wind power at 80 m may be substantially greater than previously estimated. It was found that 24% of all stations (and 37% of all coastal/offshore stations) are characterized by mean annual speeds ≥6.9 m/s at 80 m, implying that the winds over possibly one quarter of the United States are strong enough to provide electric power at a direct cost equal to that of a new natural gas or coal power plant. The greatest previously uncharted reservoir of wind power in the continental United States is offshore and nearshore along the southeastern and southern coasts. When multiple wind sites are considered, the number of days with no wind power and the standard deviation of the wind speed, integrated across all sites, are substantially reduced in comparison with when one wind site is considered. Therefore a network of wind farms in locations with high annual mean wind speeds may provide a reliable and abundant source of electric power.",

Ground- and satellite-based broadband measurements in this range are currently performed and are described further in this chapter. Solar radiation fundamentals and the main radiometric quantities are summarized in the first section. Section two is dedicated to radiometry instrumentation for surface measurements and the main monitoring networks and databases are reviewed. Section three explains the derivation of the solar energy irradiance/irradiation from satellite observations. A brief review of the methods and a survey of available databases are presented. Some specifications of the required data for forecasting the output of PV systems are given in section four.",

It also highlights the disadvantages of using low-sized measurements for creating the wind profile. It also demonstrates how to obtain different speed profiles at the same site and for the same month of a different year. This arrangement allows for the compilation of different roughness and friction coefficients for the same site. This paper also entails a full study case presentation for the site located in the Mexican state of Zacatecas and where the wind speed measurements were extrapolated with a view to estimate the wind power at a specific height.",

"abstractNote": "The dependence of wind shear on boundary layer stability can be described using Monin-Obukhov similarity theory and modified logarithmic wind profiles. Typical measurements for wind resource assessment, however, are insufficient to assess stability. We show that useful, indirect inferences of stability are possible using measurements from typical instrumentation found on a meteorological tower installed for the purpose of wind resource assessment. Traditional power-law parameterizations, stratified by time of day and season, are often sufficient despite inter-day variations in stability. The effect of various wind speed extrapolation methods on wind energy estimates are demonstrated using measurements made during fall 2007 from a 50 m wind monitoring tower.",

"abstractNote": "This paper presents a quasi-static time-series test feeder based on the well-known 34 node test feeder [1]. This test feeder is useful for the evaluation and quantification the distribution system impacts of distributed PV integrations. The load profiles and solar resource profiles used are both publically available. The quasi-static time-series test feeder has been developed using data for the year 2010. The fixed time period between power flow solutions is 1 min making the presented quasi-static time-series test feeder appropriate for use in investigating voltage regulation device operations. A load allocation algorithm is also proposed for assigning spot and distributed loads in the 34 node test feeder to time varying load profiles based on rate class load profiles. A simple model for modeling the real AC power output of a PV system based on discrete global horizontal irradiance (GHI) is also presented. The results of analysis completed using the quasi-static time-series test feeder are shown for various single-site 1MW PV deployment scenarios and voltage regulator compensation settings.",

"abstractNote": "The photovoltaic geographic information system (PVGIS) is a web-based knowledge distribution system that provides climate data and tools needed for the performance assessment of photovoltaic (PV) technology in Europe. Geodatabases and simulation models are interlinked with the web interface, thus providing easy-to-use access to users. Interactive maps play an important role in understanding the geographic dependency of the performance of the PV technology. While our previous papers dealt with technical aspects of development and data analysis, here we review lessons learned from the feedback of users. A description of the underlying data and web tools is followed by the analysis of two points that are often discussed when comparing PVGIS with alternative systems: 1) the uncertainty of solar radiation estimates and 2) PV yield predictions. For systems based on the ground observations, such as PVGIS, higher uncertainty of estimates can be expected in mountains, close to the coastline, and in regions with lower density of the meteorological stations. A comparison of PVGIS with other simulation software may show regional differences, which typically reflect: 1) the use of underlying databases that are based on diverse input data (ground-measured or satellite with various observation periods) and that vary in spatial and time resolutions, and 2) the use of different simulation concepts. A cross comparison of the existing systems is needed to identify advantages and limits of their use in solar energy projects.",

"abstractNote": "We present a method for estimating the performance of PV modules over large geographical regions. It uses solar radiation and temperature geospatial data that are modeled in a geographical information system. We employ a relation for the conversion efficiency of crystalline silicon cells at varying irradiance and temperature to obtain values for the loss of efficiency at any location. The method has been applied to the European subcontinent. Results indicate that the relative efficiency of crystalline Si modules varies across Europe with values ranging from 87 to 97% of the conversion efficiency at STC (highest in the North and in mountainous areas).",
