"abstractNote": "This article examines how social and health inequalities shape the health impacts of climate change in the UK, and what the implications are for climate change adaptation and health care provision. The evidence generated by the other articles of the special issue were interpreted using social justice reasoning in light of additional literature, to draw out the key implications of health and social inequalities for health outcomes of climate change. Exposure to heat and cold, air pollution, pollen, food safety risks, disruptions to access to and functioning of health services and facilities, emerging infections and flooding are examined as the key impacts of climate change influencing health outcomes. Age, pre-existing medical conditions and social deprivation are found to be the key (but not only) factors that make people vulnerable and to experience more adverse health outcomes related to climate change impacts. In the future, climate change, aging population and decreasing public spending on health and social care may aggravate inequality of health outcomes related to climate change. Health education and public preparedness measures that take into account differential exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity of different groups help address health and social inequalities to do with climate change. Adaptation strategies based on individual preparedness, action and behaviour change may aggravate health and social inequalities due to their selective uptake, unless they are coupled with broad public information campaigns and financial support for undertaking adaptive measures.",

"abstractNote": "This chapter explores the affective dimensions of liminal occasions. Following a critical overview of the 'affective turn' within recent social science and humanities scholarship, the chapter develops a notion of the limen as a sensitive threshold of transformation, and of liminality as pertaining to occasions of becoming. The chapter develops Victor Turner's distinction between staged and unstaged liminal occasions and explores their connection through the creativity of artistic processes. It then discusses the contemporary relevance of liminal occasions in a changing societal context characterised by modes of permanent liminality which generate liminal hotspots of suspended psychosocial transformation.",

"abstractNote": "The introduction to this special section of the journal argues that while it is widely accepted today that infectious disease epidemics are the result of long-term and complex social, ecological, economic and political processes, outbreaks are, more often than not, experienced on the ground as unexpected eruptions. This introduction defends the position that the dialectics between the evental and processual aspects of epidemics are good to think with anthropologically, and points to the consequences of this for an analysis of epidemic temporality in the context of emergent infectious disease discourse and intensifying biopolitical surveillance aimed at averting the 'next pandemic'.",

"abstractNote": "AIMS: To report a narrative review of literature that drew on the concept of liminality as a framework for understanding the cancer experience. In doing so, we explored the utility of liminality for guiding research on experiences of cancer survivorship.\nBACKGROUND: The 'rites of passage' model uses the concept of liminality to explore transition. Taking cancer survivorship as a process, liminality may facilitate our understanding of this phenomenon.\nDATA SOURCES: Searches of Medline, PsycInfo, British Nursing Index, Cinahl, ASSIA, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and British Library databases were conducted, covering 1985-2011. Search terms were cancer and liminal* or rite* of passage.\nDESIGN: A narrative review, using a textual narrative approach, was undertaken to provide a comprehensive overview of the topic.\nREVIEW METHODS: Studies were arranged into groups according to the stage of the cancer trajectory on which they focused. Findings from each study were presented to highlight facets of the liminal experience at each stage.\nRESULTS: Ten studies were included for review. Liminality depicts the ambiguity and uncertainty often experienced by people affected by cancer. Although liminality appears useful for understanding experiences of cancer risk, diagnosis, treatment and the period following active treatment, little research has explored the concept with respect to long-term survivorship.\nCONCLUSION: Gaps in current evidence highlight the need for additional research to ascertain the utility of liminality for understanding experiences of long-term survivorship. Research exploring the personal and social implications of living a liminal life, at all stages of the cancer trajectory, is also warranted.",

"abstractNote": "The post-World War II period gave rise to a large number of social-scientific techniques for investigating and intervening in social reality. A particular group of these, exemplified here by the experiments of Moreno, Lewin, Bion, Milgram and Zimbardo, worked by establishing suggestive micro-realities in which participants were exposed to, or experimented with, selected ‘social problems’. We investigate the nature of these techniques – being simultaneously highly artificial and disturbingly realistic – and propose the notion of ‘provocative containment’ to understand their operation and effects. We point to five ingredients of their characteristic mode of operation – expressionism, incitement, trauma, distillation and technology – and argue that they do not serve to represent a simplified version of social reality, but rather to ‘realize’ particular forms of social life intrinsic to the medium of provocative containment.",

"abstractNote": "How can therapeutic techniques simultaneously be tools for emancipation and act as subtle forms of control? The article investigates this seeming paradox by examining a technique for group analysis developed by Wilfred Bion aimed at surfacing the inclination of a group to prompt inexpedient leadership. Over time, the technique developed a reputation as a very effective, but also a very challenging, and even disturbing method, and was subsequently translated into less intense versions. By analyzing its key principles and operational risks, the article discusses Bion’s experience group as illustrative of the “scaling problems” associated with the operation of therapeutic techniques. The handling of such problems is central to the effects and survivability of a particular method, and in this case the original purpose was gradually eroded. The article concludes that a focus on the “sociomechanics” of such techniques offers an opportunity to resuscitate their instituted purposes combined with a more precise understanding of the risks associated with their attainment.",
