            "abstractNote": "We present strategies for “online” dynamic power management(DPM) based on the notion of the competitive ratio that allows us to compare the effectiveness of algorithms\nagainst an optimal strategy. This paper makes two contributions: it provides a theoretical basis for the analysis of DPM\nstrategies for systems with multiple power down states; and\nprovides a competitive algorithm based on probabilistically\ngenerated inputs that improves the competitive ratio over\ndeterministic strategies. Experimental results show that our\nprobability-based DPM strategy improves the efﬁciency of\npower management over the deterministic DPM strategy by\n25%, bringing the strategy to within 23% of the optimal of-\nﬂine DPM.",

            "abstractNote": "Reducing energy consumption is critical to prolonging the battery life in\nportable devices. With rising energy costs and increases in energy consumption by\ndevices in stationary systems energy expenses of large corporations can annually\nreach into millions of dollars. Subsequently, energy management has also become\nimportant for desktop machines in large scale organizations. While energy management techniques for portable devices can be utilized in stationary systems, they\ndo not consider network resources readily available to stationary workstations. We\npropose a network-aware energy management mechanism that provides a low-cost\nsolution that can signiﬁcantly reduce energy consumption in the entire system while\nmaintaining responsiveness of local interactive workloads. The key component of\nthe system is a novel program-context-based bandwidth predictor that accurately\npredicts application’s bandwidth demand for ﬁle server/client interaction. Our dynamic mechanisms reduce the decision delay before the disk is spun-up, reduce the\nnumber of erroneous spin-ups in local workstations, decrease the network bandwidth, and reduce the energy consumption of individual drives.",

            "abstractNote": "Current trends in data-intensive applications increase\nthe demand for larger physical memory, resulting in the\nmemory subsystem consuming a signiﬁcant portion of system’s energy. Furthermore, data-intensive applications\nheavily rely on a large buffer cache that occupies a majority of physical memory. Subsequently, we are focusing\non the power management for physical memory dedicated\nto the buffer cache. Several techniques have been proposed\nto reduce energy consumption by transitioning DRAM into\nlow-power states. However, transitions between different\npower states incur delays and may affect whole system performance. We take advantage of the I/O handling routines\nin the OS kernel to hide the delay incurred by the memory\nstate transition so that performance degradation is minimized while maintaining high memory energy savings. Our\nevaluation shows that the best of the proposed mechanisms\nhides almost all transition latencies while only consuming\n3% more energy as compared to the existing on-demand\nmechanism, which can expose signiﬁcant delays.",

            "abstractNote": "Main memory contributes a large fraction of\nenergy consumption in powerful servers running virtualization\nsoftware to support concurrent virtual machines (VMs). Furthermore, data-intensive applications executing inside virtual\nmachines increase the demand for larger physical memory,\nresulting in the memory subsystem consuming a signiﬁcant\nportion of system’s energy. Data-intensive applications heavily\nrely on a large buffer cache that occupies a majority of\nphysical memory and as a result we are focusing on the\npower management for physical memory dedicated to the\nbuffer cache in VMs. Existing approaches have focused on\noptimizing memory energy consumption from an operating\nsystem (OS) perspective. However, these approaches cannot\nbe directly used in a virtual machine environment because of\nabstractions and separations used in virtualization of resources.\nTo address virtualization of resources, we adapt an existing\nmechanism that leverages ﬁle I/O system calls in the guest\nOS kernel to hide the delay incurred by the memory power\nstate transition while reducing memory energy consumption. In\naddition, we propose a novel hybrid mechanism that is able to\nimprove energy efﬁciency for memory-mapped ﬁles in addition\nto regular ﬁle I/Os through system calls. Through detailed\ntrace driven evaluation, the delay-hiding energy management\nin the guest operating system inside a virtual machine can\nreduce memory energy consumption by 89.6% compared with\na standard virtual machine environment when handling ﬁle I/O\nsystem calls; our proposed hybrid mechanism performs better\nthan either mechanism and can improve memory energy saving\nwith negligible delay when processing both ﬁle I/O system calls\nand memory-mapped ﬁles.",

            "abstractNote": "Current trends in increasing storage capacity and virtualization of\nresources combined with the need for energy efﬁciency put a challenging task in front of system designers. Previous studies have\nsuggested many approaches to reduce hard disk energy dissipation\nin native OS environments; however, those mechanisms do not perform well in virtual machine environments because a virtual machine (VM) and the virtual machine monitor (VMM) that runs it\nhave different semantic contexts. This paper explores the disk I/O\nactivities between VMM and VMs using trace driven simulation to\nunderstand the I/O behavior of the VM system. Subsequently, this\npaper proposes three mechanisms to address the isolation between\nVMM and VMs, and increase the burstiness of hard disk accesses\nto increase energy efﬁciency of a hard disk. Compared to standard\nshutdown mechanisms, with eight VMs the proposed mechanisms\nreduce disk spin-ups, increase the disk sleep time, and reduce energy consumption by 14.8% with only 0.5% increase in execution\ntime. We implemented the proposed mechanisms in Xen and validated our simulation results.",

            "abstractNote": "Dynamic power management schemes (also called\npolicies) reduce the power consumption of complex electronic systems by trading off performance for power in a controlled fashion, taking system workload into account. In a power-managed\nsystem it is possible to set components into different states, each\ncharacterized by performance and power consumption levels. The\nmain function of a power management policy is to decide when\nto perform component state transitions and which transition\nshould be performed, depending on system history, workload,\nand performance constraints.\nIn the past, power management policies have been formulated\nheuristically. The main contribution of this paper is to introduce\na ﬁnite-state, abstract system model for power-managed systems\nbased on Markov decision processes. Under this model, the\nproblem of ﬁnding policies that optimally tradeoff performance\nfor power can be cast as a stochastic optimization problem and\nsolved exactly and efﬁciently. The applicability and generality\nof the approach are assessed by formulating Markov model and\noptimizing power management policies for several systems.",

With this new paradigm however come new challenges in computer operating \nsystems development. These challenges include heretofore relatively unusual items \nsuch as frequent network disconnections, communications bandwidth limitations, \nresource restrictions, and power limitations. It is the last of these challenges that we \nshall explore in this paper--that is the question of what techniques can be employed \nin mobile computer operating systems that can reduce the power consumption of today's mobile computing devices.",
