            "abstractNote": "The energy efficiency of different biogas systems, including single and co-digestion of multiple feedstock,\ndifferent biogas utilization pathways, and waste-stream management strategies was evaluated. The input\ndata were derived from assessment of existing biogas systems, present knowledge on anaerobic digestion\nprocess management and technologies for biogas system operating conditions in Germany. The energy\nbalance was evaluated as Primary Energy Input to Output (PEIO) ratio, to assess the process energy efficiency,\nhence, the potential sustainability. Results indicate that the PEIO correspond to 10.5–64.0% and\n34.1–55.0% for single feedstock digestion and feedstock co-digestion, respectively. Energy balance was\nassessed to be negative for feedstock transportation distances in excess of 22 km and 425 km for cattle\nmanure and for Municipal Solid Waste, respectively, which defines the operational limits for respective\nfeedstock transportation. Energy input was highly influenced by the characteristics of feedstock used. For\nexample, agricultural waste, in most part, did not require pre-treatment. Energy crop feedstock required\nthe respect cultivation energy inputs, and processing of industrial waste streams included energydemanding\npre-treatment processes to meet stipulated hygiene standards. Energy balance depended\non biogas yield, the utilization efficiency, and energy value of intended fossil fuel substitution. For example,\nobtained results suggests that, whereas the upgrading of biogas to biomethane for injection into natural\ngas network potentially increased the primary energy input for biogas utilization by up to 100%; the\nenergy efficiency of the biogas system improved by up to 65% when natural gas was substituted instead\nof electricity. It was also found that, system energy efficiency could be further enhanced by 5.1–6.1%\nthrough recovery of residual biogas from enclosed digestate storage units. Overall, this study provides\nbases for more detailed assessment of environmental compatibility of energy efficiency pathways in biogas\nproduction and utilization, including management of spent digestate.",

            "abstractNote": "A Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) was developed to identify the unit processes in the life-cycle of biogas\nproduction and utilization offering the greatest opportunities for emission to air reduction, hence\npotential for environmental improvement. The systems investigated included single feedstock digestion\nand multiple feedstock co-digestion, small (<500 kWel) and large-scale (⬚500 kWel) biogas plants, and\nselected biogas utilization pathways and digestate management options. Analysis was performed in\naccordance with ISO 14040 and 14044 standards, using SimaPro 7.2 software and Ecoinvent⬚ v2.1\ndatabase. The analysis is based on published data considering primarily conditions for Germany. Results\nindicated significant variation of emission levels for all unit processes related to biogas production and\nutilization. Emissions from the feedstock supply logistics were highly influenced by the origin of feedstock\nused. For example, the fossil fuel related carbon dioxide (CO2,fossil) emissions associated with\nfeedstock supply were over 50 times higher for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) compared to cattle\nmanure. The higher value for MSW was associated with the requisite collection, transport and pretreatment,\nwhereas only transportation was required for cattle manure. Emissions from unit processes\nin biogas plant operation and biogas utilization depended on combined efficiency of energy generation\n(electricity and thermal), potential substitution of fossil fuels with biogas and utilization of the heat byproduct\nof electricity generation. For example, the results indicated that upgrading of biogas to biomethane,\nwith almost 100% conversion efficiency, caused 6 times less non-methane volatile organic\ncompounds (NMVOC) emissions if plant heating was supplied from coupled small-scale CHP unit as\nopposed to heating with natural gas. Harnessing of the residual biogas from digestate storage areas was\nestimated to reduce methane emission by a factor up to 14. Overall, this study provides basic data\nrequired for identification and mitigation of emission ‘hot-spots’ in biogas production and utilization,\nincluding the evaluation of environmental and public health impacts of biogas technology options by\nattributional Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology.",

            "abstractNote": "Biogas is a promising renewable fuel, which can be produced from a variety of organic raw materials and\nused for various energetic purposes, such as heat, combined heat and power or as a vehicle fuel. Biogas\nsystems implementation are, therefore, subjected to several support measures but also to several\nconstraints, related with policy measures on energy, waste treatment and agriculture. In this work,\ndifferent policies and policy instruments, as well as other factors, which influence a potential expansion\nof Portuguese biogas systems are identified and evaluated. The result of this analysis shows that the use\nof the cattle manure for biogas production is still far from its potential. The main reason is the reduced\ndimension of the Portuguese farms, which makes biogas production unfeasible. Various options are\nsuggested to increase or improve biogas production such as co-digestion, centralized plants and modular\nplants. Horizontal digesters are the most suitable for the typical Portuguese plant size and have the\nadvantage of being also suitable for co-digestion due to the very good mixing conditions. Mesophilic\nanaerobic digestion due to a more robustness, stability and lower energy consumption should be the\nchoice. The recent increase in the feed-in tariffs for the electricity production based on anaerobic\ndigestion biogas is seen as a political push to this sector.",

            "abstractNote": "Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is a biological process that takes place naturally when bacteria break down\norganic matter in environments with or without oxygen. Controlled anaerobic digestion of organic waste\nin enclosed landfill will generate methane. Almost any organic material can be processed with AD, including\nwaste paper and cardboard (of a grade that is too low to recycle because of food contamination), grass\nclippings, leftover food, industrial effluents, sewage and animal waste. AD produces biogas which is comprised\nof around 60% methane (CH4) and 40% carbon dioxide (CO2). This biogas can be used to generate\nheat or electricity and/or can be used as a vehicular fuel. If the intended use is for power generation the\nbiogas must be scrubbed to remove a number of impurities. After conditioning the biogas can be used for\nonsite power generation, to heat homes or can be added to the national natural gas grid. In recent years\nseveral research groups have shown the possibility of upgrading the biogas for biomethane production\n[1]. This study will show the feasibility of integrating anaerobic digestion plant with onsite polymeric\nmembrane purification system for conditioned biomethane production.",

            "abstractNote": "Anaerobic digestion enables waste (water) treatment and energy production in the form of\nbiogas. The successful implementation of this process has lead to an increasing interest\nworldwide. However, anaerobic digestion is a complex biological process, where hundreds\nof microbial populations are involved, and whose start-up and operation are delicate\nissues. In order to better understand the process dynamics and to optimize the operating\nconditions, the availability of dynamic models is of paramount importance. Such models\nhave to be inferred from prior knowledge and experimental data collected from real plants.\nModeling and parameter identification are vast subjects, offering a realm of approaches\nand methods, which can be difficult to fully understand by scientists and engineers\ndedicated to the plant operation and improvements. This review article discusses existing\nmodeling frameworks and methodologies for parameter estimation and model validation\nin the field of anaerobic digestion processes. The point of view is pragmatic, intentionally\nfocusing on simple but efficient methods.",

            "abstractNote": "The effects of elevated pH shocks on the performance and membrane fouling of a submerged anaerobic\nmembrane bioreactor (SAnMBR) treating thermomechanical pulping (TMP) whitewater was studied over\na 120-day period. Changes in chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal, biogas production, sludge and\ncake layer properties, and their correlations to membrane fouling – before and after pH shocks – were\nsystematically studied using various analytical tools. The results showed that a pH 8.0 shock had a minor\nimpact, while pH 9.1 and 10.0 shocks exerted significant long-lasting negative impacts on COD removal,\nbiogas production and membrane filtration performance of the SAnMBR. When the normal pH (7.0) was\nresumed, it took approximately 1, 6, and 30 days for the performance to recover for pH 8.0, 9.1 and\n10.0 shocks, respectively. The elevated pH shocks induced the dispersion of sludge flocs and resulted in\nthe accumulation of colloids and solutes or biopolymers in the sludge suspension, and thus deteriorated\nmembrane performance. Statistical analysis showed that the ratio of proteins (PN) to polysaccharides (PS)\nin extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) had a strongly negative effect on the membrane fouling rate.\nThere were smaller size particles deposited on the membrane surface and a more compact and denser\ncake layer was formed after being exposed to an alkaline shock at pH 10, resulting in higher membrane\nfouling rates.",

In this review, the extensive literature data have been tabulated\nand ranked under various categories and the influence of several parameters on the methane potential\nof the feedstocks are presented. Almost all the land- and water-based species examined to date either have\ngood digestion characteristics or can be pre-treated to promote digestion. This review emphasizes the\nurgent need for evaluating the inumerable unexplored genera of plants as potential sources for methane\nproduction.",
