capture, mantain, save, index, preserve and redistribute entire output of an institution in digital format. They adhere to open access modell and they are OAI – compliant. Building of insitutional repository is essential to the library whose mission is to provide access to wide range of information sources including open access sources and to promote them, as well. \n\nIntellectual output of the Institute might contain: pre-prints, post-prints, doctoral theses and dissertations, master's degree, conference papers, teaching materials, photographs and video recordings. Establishing an institutional repository in the Institute would enable us to achieve main goals: digital contents preservation, easier accessability, broader dissemination, author self-archiving, easy publishing. Also that would include our active position in promotion of open access in Croatia, as RBI library is already involved on that project with CARNet. \n\nBuilding an institutional repository would include following steps:\n•\tdefinition of institutional repository service \n•\tacceptance of proposal for creation of institutional repository on RBI \n•\tmaking policy rules for self-archiving and access rights\n•\tidentification and test of software platform from open source applications (the essential components of software include: interface for adding content to the system, interface for searching/browsing/retrieving content, database for storing content and administrative interface) and its installation\n•\tpresentation of institutional repository to our scientists \n•\tlaunching and running a service\n\nWe have already made an initial list of well known software providers offering Institutional Repository software solutions. Based on the RBI needs and considering consolidation of IT services, it was decided that RBI digital repository will include three different types of archived content: scientific output, documentary and press clipping materials. This is the main difference against other commonly implemented institutional repositories which archive mostly only scientific articles and thesis. Choosing of appropriate software, its implementation and customization will be discussed, as well as the methodology of gathering content for the repository and the method of its archiving. Archived material will be organized in collections based on the RBI needs and divisional structure. During the process of creation of metadata schemes for different types of archived content, especially those of scientific character, special attention was paid to OAI compliance with other digital/institutional repositories, as well as with Croatian Scientific Bibliography (CROSBI). The goal is that researchers should archive scientific materials primarily in RBI digital repository, while metadata will be automatically exported to CROSBI. "abstractNote": "Open Access (OA) to scientific information has become, during the last decade, an important means of communicating in science. The most important fact, proved by numerous studies, is that OA can increase visibility and impact of research results. The first chapter of the book gives an overview of the beginnings of formal scientific communication as an introduction to the further discussion on OA, especially OA in developing and transition countries. In the second chapter, basic definitions of OA and basic OA initiatives are explained as well as the two ways of achieving OA. The third chapter analyses access barriers for scientifically peripheral countries and the ways of removing them. Chapters four and five are completely dedicated to the Open Access in Croatia. Using an example of Croatia, the possibilities of increasing research results of a scientifically peripheral country are explained. Results of the complete study of OA in Croatia are analysed and explained. The study consists of two parts – study of Croatian OA journals and study of Croatian OA repositories. In the first part, the data on editorial policy regarding electronic publishing are gathered by the method of web content analysis. In the sample are all the Croatian scientific journals that had, by the end of June 2010, at least one 2009 issue freely available on the internet. The second part of the study discusses the problem of OA repositories in Croatia and gives an example of such a repository.
