Contrary to postmodern textual and cognitive presumptions, this study uses dual coding theory, cognitive load theory, and constructivist narrative film theory, to claim that distraction results from cognitive and behavioural multi-tasking which lead to split attention problems that cannot be cognitively handled. Focus is upon split attention resulting from the non-critical use of split screens, from decentred, non-cohering audio-visual and multi-narrative formations, and from interaction. The analysis of several new media works, existing tools and models, particularly those pertaining to narrative-oriented 'interactive films', instantiates these claims. For narrative interactive audio-visual texts to sustain deep, wide-ranged engagement, multi-tasking split attention problems inhering in computer-based works have to be managed, and - most importantly - made to enhance rather than reduce engagement. A mental models approach to narrative processing forms the foundation of a model that integrates narrative comprehension and phenomenological experiences such as transportation and identification. Three types of unrealness are discussed: fictionality, external realism (match with external reality), and narrative realism (coherence within a story). We gather evidence that fictionality does not affect narrative processing. On the other hand, violations of external and narrative realism are conceived as inconsistencies among the viewer’s mental structures as they construct mental models of meaning to represent and comprehend the narrative. Moreover, Propp’s thorough characterization of basic narrative constituents by explanations, discussions and examples of their different realizations in his corpus is utilized to construct an automatic classification model. A semi-automatic classification supports (i) authors to associate new scenes with basic narrative constituents and (ii) players to control the narrative flow in the story engine. For the latter task, the selection of an appropriate plot element and behavioral pattern within the dialog model in response to player interactions is controlled by similarities between stimuli and known realizations of basic narrative constituents or behavioral patterns.
