"abstractNote": "The formation of nearly wavelength-sized laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on single-crystalline silicon upon irradiation with single (N = 1) and multiple (N ≤ 1000) linearly polarized femtosecond (fs) laser pulses (pulse duration τ = 130 fs, central wavelength λ = 800 nm) in air is studied experimentally. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy are used for imaging of the ablated surface morphologies, both revealing LIPSS with periodicities close to the laser wavelength and an orientation always perpendicular to the polarization of the fs-laser beam. It is experimentally demonstrated that these LIPSS can be formed in silicon upon irradiation by single fs-laser pulses—a result that is additionally supported by a recent theoretical model. Two-dimensional Fourier transforms of the SEM images allow the detailed analysis of the distribution of the spatial frequencies of the LIPSS and indicate, at a fixed peak fluence, a monotonous decrease in their mean spatial period between ∼ 770 nm (N = 1) and 560 nm (N = 1000). The characteristic decrease in the LIPSS period is caused by a feedback-mechanism acting upon excitation of surface plasmon polaritons at the rough silicon surface which is developing under the action of multiple pulses into a periodically corrugated surface.",

Simulations reveal that using a lateral superresolution pupil filter more than twice the out of plane correlation length of the clear pupil can be achieved. This means that the measurement range in speckle correlation measurements doubles. To verify the correlation length an experiment is performed using a liquid crystal (LCD) spatial light modulator as a programmable superresolution filter. The results corroborate the simulation.",

"abstractNote": "We introduce a novel parallel-aligned liquid-crystal (LC) spatial light modulator (SLM) that has been designed to operate in a phase-only mode for wave-front correction. We measured and analyzed theoretically the electro-optic characteristics of the LC SLM and obtained a peak-to-valley value of 0.07049λ(λ= 0.6328µm) after correction. A Strehl ratio of 0.989 indicates the approximate upper limit of an aberrated wave front that the LC SLM can correct when it is used in an adaptive optical system.",

"abstractNote": "High-resolution images of a fluorescent target were obtained using a low-resolution optical detector by illuminating the target with interference patterns produced with 31 coherent beams. The beams were arranged in a cone with 78° half angle to produce illumination patterns consistent with a numerical aperture of 0.98. High-resolution images were constructed from low-resolution images taken with 930 different illumination patterns. Results for optical detectors with numerical apertures of 0.1 and 0.2 were similar, demonstrating that the resolution is primarily determined by the illuminator and not by the low-resolution detector. Furthermore, the long working distance, large depth of field, and large field of view of the low-resolution detector are preserved.",

"abstractNote": "Focused on silicon surface in water, superimposed multiple shots of linearly polarized 800-nm, 100-fs, 10-Hz laser pulses at lower fluence than the single-pulse ablation threshold are shown to produce two kinds of periodic nanostructures with almost constant periods of 150 nm and 400 nm. Surface plasmon polaritons excited in the surface layer illustrates well the formation of nanostructures and its dynamic properties observed. Pump and probe measurements of the ultrafast change in surface reflectivity during the interaction have demonstrated that the multiple low-fluence fs pulses are crucial to the nanostructuring through the accumulation of non-thermal bonding structure change and the subsequent nanoscale ablation.",

"abstractNote": "We developed a structured illumination microscopy (SIM) system that uses a spatial light modulator (SLM) to generate interference illumination patterns at four orientations – 0°, 45°, 90°, and 135°, to reconstruct a high-resolution image. The use of a SLM for pattern alterations is rapid and precise, without mechanical calibration; moreover, our design of SLM patterns allows generating the four illumination patterns of high contrast and nearly equivalent periods to achieve a near isotropic enhancement in lateral resolution. We compare the conventional image of 100-nm beads with those reconstructed from two (0°+90° or 45°+135°) and four (0°+45°+90°+135°) pattern orientations to show the differences in resolution and image, with the support of simulations. The reconstructed images of 200-nm beads at various depths and fine structures of actin filaments near the edge of a HeLa cell are presented to demonstra the intensity distributions in the axial direction and the prospective application to biological systems.",

"abstractNote": "We discuss unique features of lens-free computational imaging tools and report some of their emerging results for wide-field on-chip microscopy, such as the achievement of a numerical aperture (NA) of ∼0.8-0.9 across a field of view (FOV) of more than 20 mm(2) or an NA of ∼0.1 across a FOV of ∼18 cm(2), which corresponds to an image with more than 1.5 gigapixels. We also discuss the current challenges that these computational on-chip microscopes face, shedding light on their future directions and applications.",

"abstractNote": "Hyperresolving (sometimes called 'superresolving' or 'ultraresolving') phase-only filters can be generated using an optically addressable liquid crystal spatial light modulator. This approach avoids the problems of low efficiency, and coupling between amplitude and phase modulation, that arise when using conventional liquid crystal modulators. When addressed by a programmed light intensity distribution, it allows filters to be changed rapidly to modify the response of a system or permit the investigation of different filter designs. In this paper we present experimental hyperresolved images obtained using an optically addressable parallel-aligned nematic LCD with two zone Toraldo type phase-only filters. The images are compared with theoretical predictions.",

We propose to combine the advantages of amplitude and phase filters in one complex filter that performs better than either phase or amplitude filters designed so far. The performance here refers to having a smaller spot size along with higher peak to side lobe intensity ratio. Using numerical simulation the limitations of phase and amplitude filters are assessed. The experimental verification of the designed combination filter is performed with two LCD spatial light modulators used for displaying separately the phase and amplitude part of the filter. Results obtained from this setup confirm the simulation.",

"abstractNote": "Increasing the resolving power of optical systems beyond the limits imposed by diffraction, or superresolution, has considerable theoretical as well as practical interest. Several schemes have been proposed to achieve superresolution with reasonable success, but there are no criteria that enable one to determine what improvement can ultimately be attained for a certain level of resolution. We have determined fundamental limits imposed on the performance of any superresolution strategy. A brief analysis indicates that current optical-superresolution techniques can still have their performance considerably augmented.",

"abstractNote": "We present a method for reducing the phase flicker originated by the pulsed modulation of a Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) Spatial Light Modulator (SLM). It consists in reducing the temperature of the LCoS in a controlled way, in order to increase the viscosity of the liquid crystal. By doing this, we increase the time response of the liquid crystal, and thus reduce the amplitude of phase fluctuations. We evaluate the efficacy of this method quantifying the temporal evolution of phase shift using an experiment that is insensitive to optical polarization fluctuations. Additionally, we determine the effect of the temperature reduction on the effective phase modulation capability of the LCoS. We demonstrate that a reduction of up to 80% of the flicker initial value can be achieved when the LCoS is brought to −8 °C.",

"abstractNote": "The effect of surface roughness was studied on the formation of femtosecond laser-induced ripple structures for 4H-SiC. Of the two types of ripple structures, fine and coarse, the threshold fluence for the formation of the fine ripple was remarkably reduced on the surface roughened by intentional rubbing, while the threshold for the formation of the coarse ripple was not affected. The result suggests that the initial surface roughness plays a significant role only for the formation of fine ripples. A brief explanation will be given on the qualitative basis for the specific effect of surface morphology to the fine ripple formation.",

"abstractNote": "We present spatial light interference microscopy (SLIM) as a new optical microscopy technique, capable of measuring nanoscale structures and dynamics in live cells via interferometry. SLIM combines two classic ideas in light imaging: Zernike’s phase contrast microscopy, which renders high contrast intensity images of transparent specimens, and Gabor’s holography, where the phase information from the object is recorded. Thus, SLIM reveals the intrinsic contrast of cell structures and, in addition, renders quantitative optical path-length maps across the sample. The resulting topographic accuracy is comparable to that of atomic force microscopy, while the acquisition speed is 1,000 times higher. We illustrate the novel insight into cell dynamics via SLIM by experiments on primary cell cultures from the rat brain. SLIM is implemented as an add-on module to an existing phase contrast microscope, which may prove instrumental in impacting the light microscopy field at a large scale.",

This novel approach searches for an optimal pupil mask that minimizes the value of the mean-square error when performed over the intensity rather than in the field distribution of the acquired image. The captured images in such system do not require any postprocessing, and thus utilization of such a system is simplified. Simulations as well as experimental results are provided.",

"abstractNote": "Lateral resolution that exceeds the classical diffraction limit by a factor of two is achieved by using spatially structured illumination in a wide-field fluorescence microscope. The sample is illuminated with a series of excitation light patterns, which cause normally inaccessible high-resolution information to be encoded into the observed image. The recorded images are linearly processed to extract the new information and produce a reconstruction with twice the normal resolution. Unlike confocal microscopy, the resolution improvement is achieved with no need to discard any of the emission light. The method produces images of strikingly increased clarity compared to both conventional and confocal microscopes.",

"abstractNote": "Structured illumination microscopy is a method that can increase the spatial resolution of wide-field fluorescence microscopy beyond its classical limit by using spatially structured illumination light. Here we describe how this method can be applied in three dimensions to double the axial as well as the lateral resolution, with true optical sectioning. A grating is used to generate three mutually coherent light beams, which interfere in the specimen to form an illumination pattern that varies both laterally and axially. The spatially structured excitation intensity causes normally unreachable high-resolution information to become encoded into the observed images through spatial frequency mixing. This new information is computationally extracted and used to generate a three-dimensional reconstruction with twice as high resolution, in all three dimensions, as is possible in a conventional wide-field microscope. The method has been demonstrated on both test objects and biological specimens, and has produced the first light microscopy images of the synaptonemal complex in which the lateral elements are clearly resolved.",
