"abstractNote": "Digital Innovation Units (DIUs) have become an important vehicle for digital innovation and the exploration of new ventures, often applying Design Thinking (DT). However, scholars lack knowledge about how to measure these activities from the perspective of both DIUs and DT. To understand the key challenges involved, an exploratory qualitative research design and a grounded theory approach were adopted to analyze data obtained from interviews conducted with 20 DIU members. Our findings identify eight challenges around the topic of misalignment between the DIUs’ objectives and how their activities are assessed by using metrics. The rich descriptions provided in this study deepen our understanding of the challenges involved in measuring DIUs’ activities, and provide the basis for future developments to monitor and steer their innovation activities more meaningfully to guide resource allocation.",

There are a lot of books on how to get started, but this is the first book that describes what a 'good' service is and how to design one. This book lays out the essential principles for building services that work well for users. Demystifying what we mean by a 'good' and 'bad' service and describing the common elements within all services that mean they either work for users or don't.A practical book for practitioners and non-practitioners alike interested in better service delivery, this book is the definitive new guide to designing services that work for users.",

"abstractNote": "Many executives believe that all failure is bad (although it usually provides Lessons) and that Learning from it is pretty straightforward. The author, a professor at Harvard Business School, thinks both beliefs are misguided. In organizational life, she says, some failures are inevitable and some are even good. And successful learning from failure is not simple: It requires context-specific strategies. But first leaders must understand how the blame game gets in the way and work to create an organizational culture in which employees feel safe admitting or reporting on failure. Failures fall into three categories: preventable ones in predictable operations, which usually involve deviations from spec; unavoidable ones in complex systems, which may arise from unique combinations of needs, people, and problems; and intelligent ones at the frontier, where \"good\" failures occur quickly and on a small scale, providing the most valuable information. Strong leadership can build a learning culture-one in which failures large and small are consistently reported and deeply analyzed, and opportunities to experiment are proactively sought. Executives commonly and understandably worry that taking a sympathetic stance toward failure will create an \"anything goes\" work environment. They should instead recognize that failure is inevitable in today's complex work organizations.",

"abstractNote": "Insight velocity measures the speed with which participants in a meeting increase their understanding of a problem and its possible solutions. The problem solving meeting is an information processing system subject to the influence of rational and social forces. Traditional meeting skills and information technology, in the form of group technology, provide meeting designers with a means of amplifying and dampening these social forces to improve the effectiveness of meetings. For each phase of a meeting, a three stage information processing model (generate, evaluate, and relate) is described. Meeting design consists of two activities: (1) dividing a meeting into a sequence of information processing steps, and (2) deciding which forces to amplify or dampen in each phase. Meeting design is based on repeated application of this three stage model to maintain insight velocity. These principles of meeting design are illustrated with vignettes drawn from selected meetings addressing complex problems.",

"abstractNote": "The creative behaviors that underpin design thinking are difficult to measure. This is problematic because people who have a desire to practice design thinking in an organizational context are often assessed only on their ability to execute via traditional metrics. Therefore they have less incentive to work in a creative way. In order for organizations to fully support and incentivize design thinking, they must measure creative behaviors as much as they do executional behaviors. This chapter highlights a suite of initial metrics that arose from research on d.school alumni and organizations applying design thinking as a core driver of their innovation strategy.",

"abstractNote": "The focus of this book chapter is the introduction of two complementary instruments, the Topic Markup Scheme (TMS) and the Knowledge Handling Notation (KHN) to analyze design conversations. Both instruments will be applied to a design conversation sample. TMS offers a diagnostic procedure that is capable of describing the topical structure of a conversation and its move-to-move coherence. KHN describes on the move-to-move level how innovation teams generate and share knowledge. The output of both instruments, in the form of strings of symbols can be used for sequence analysis and pattern detection of team dynamics. Together, the outcomes nurture the understanding of knowledge creation in and through design conversations in innovation teams.",

"abstractNote": "The dual pathway to creativity model argues that creativity—the generation of original and appropriate ideas—is a function of cognitive flexibility and cognitive persistence, and that dispositional or situational variables may influence creativity either through their effects on flexibility, on persistence, or both. This model is tested in a number of studies in which participants performed creative ideation tasks. We review work showing that cognitive flexibility, operationalised as the number of content categories surveyed, directly relates to idea originality, but that originality can also be achieved by exploring a few content categories in great depth (i.e., persistence). We also show that a global processing mode is associated with cognitive flexibility, but only leads to high originality in tasks that capitalise on cognitive flexibility. We finally show that activating positive mood states enhance creativity because they stimulate flexibility, while activating negative mood states can enhance creativity because they stimulate persistence. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.",

"abstractNote": "Design thinking is often misconceived as a competency that a person or organization either has or does not have. This is problematic because that perspective can lead to an incorrect assumption that design thinking is uniformly applied at the same level by anyone who knows it. This chapter describes design thinking as a practice that can range greatly depending on context. It outlines a series of measures developed to highlight both different aspects of design thinking and how those aspects can vary. These measures provide a more detailed assessment of what is necessary to successfully apply design thinking.",
