"abstractNote": "The History Engine (http://historyengine.richmond.edu) is a pedagogically oriented project that captures and organizes “episodes”—concise narratives written by undergraduate students about local historical events (e.g. the burning of abolitionist literature in Charleston in 1836 or the reaction of Chinese immigrants in New Orleans in 1911 to an imperial decree instructing them to cut off their queues). Instructors at any university are welcome and encouraged to use the site in their courses. First and foremost among the goals of the project is to facilitate an exercise where students practice some of the basic skills of historical research: they analyze primary documents, situate documents within a larger historical context, and compose thoughtful narratives that tell a story about the past and convey that story’s significance. Yet collected together in the History Engine database, these individual episodes amount to more than the sum of their parts, and taken together they illustrate the scholarly potential of social software. As thousands of these episodes are written, the site paints a portrait of life in, currently, the United States throughout its history that is both wide-ranging and deep, one that is fully accessible to scholars, teachers, and the general public. More than that, because each episode is associated with metadata—the time and place it happened, tags or keywords that identify the issues addressed in the episode—the History Engine database is growing into a rich vein for data mining and visualization. Episodes can be placed on maps, plotted on timelines, visualized topically in word clouds, etc.—visualizations that aim to reveal larger historical patterns by drawing upon a wealth of material.",

"abstractNote": "GaW is a digital indexing project and research unit aimed at recovering and interpreting information about gender and work in Early Modern Sweden from a wide variety of legal and other manuscript sources. It aims ultimately to make this information available to scholars in a searchable online database.\n\nOne reason for our lack of knowledge about survival strategies in the past is that it is extremely difficult, time-consuming and costly to extract information on people's work from the innumerable unprinted historical documents that are scattered over the archives. Thus, the present lack of adequately stored information, that is, infrastructure, thwarts research and threatens to obscure important processes in the past.\nThe database is constructed so as to alleviate analysis according to the verb-oriented method. This method is inspired by the work of Sheilagh Ogilvie [Ogilvie 2003] but has been developed further in Uppsala [Fiebranz et al. 2011]. The method makes possible analysis of working life and working conditions in societies where most work was unpaid, where most performers of work lacked occupational titles and where no occupational statistics were compiled. For such societies, researchers must try to find information about actual work activities. Such information can be found in a variety of historical sources, but not least in court records (where it often appears en passant) and in account books. The usefulness of the verb-oriented method is not, however, restricted to research about work but can be applied to all kinds of research where practices are in focus [Gräslund Berg et al. 2013].\n \nThe database is both a tool for analysis of data, and a device for storing, sharing and reusing analyzed data. It contains both a registration tool, and a retrieval tool; the latter has been considerably improved during 2012. A component, still under development, is a digital tool for automatic identification of verbs in early modern texts.",

"abstractNote": "A NEW APPROACH TO THE POPULAR PRESS IN CHINA\nGender and Cultural Production, 1904-1937\n\nThis database of the Heidelberg Research Architecture (HRA) is linked to a collaborative project funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the German Humboldt Foundation. The primary objective of the project is to restore complexity to early-twentieth-century Chinese history by liberating that history from its own reductive discourses on the failings of tradition and the promise of modernity. Our instrument and object of investigation is the popular press, a new medium that dominated the contemporary print market and became one of the prime sites for the dissemination of knowledge and the production of culture. In particular, our focus is on four seminal women's or gendered journals—a key genre of the popular media—published between 1904 and 1937. They include Nüzi shijie (Women's World, 1904-07), Funü shibao (The Women's Eastern Times, 1911-17), Funü zazhi (The Ladies' Journal, 1915-31), and Linglong (Elegance, 1931-37).\n\nHistoricizing and contextualizing this new medium, our methodological approach to these materials combines \"horizontal\" and \"vertical\" readings of the journals. Horizontal readings restore integrity and materiality to the popular press by approximating the ways journals were read in their own day, not as repositories of disembodied and disconnected articles, images, and advertisements but as organic, physical texts embedded within specific cultural contexts. Vertical readings historicize the contents of the popular press over the first three decades of the twentieth century as the medium shifted from more intellectual, politically driven journalism, to increasingly commercialized, market-driven journalism. We trace across journals and over time the emergence of new topics such as hygiene, new social categories such as the \"new woman,\" and new genres such as free-verse poetry. We are, however, particularly attentive to the persistence of established cultural forms, and to the myriad ways new concepts and narrative devices merged with and recycled the old.\n\nThe database is central to the achievement of the project's intellectual and methodological aims. Comprehensive in scope, it provides richly graphic scans of or links to digitized versions of the four journals that are the focus of our study, together with comprehensive metadata on the content of the journals—including discursive essays, photographs, advertisements, fiction, and poetry—and on their editors, journalists, and contributors.",

"abstractNote": "Charlemagne’s reign corresponds to an exceptionally high peak in the documentary record: some 4,500 documents survive from this period, more than for any other early medieval ruler. Though their distribution is patchy, charters have been preserved from all the main regions of Charlemagne’s empire. Besides the sheer volume of material they contain, they constitute a major source for other reasons. They are the most useful available source for social and economic history; further, whereas narrative sources hardly ever mention anyone outside the immediate entourage of the king, charters allow access, often of a very direct and personal kind, to broader sections of the population from regional elites to local peasant landowners. These characteristics make charters by far the richest source of prosopographical data for the Carolingian empire.\n\nEarly medieval documentary sources therefore constitute an extraordinarily rich body of evidence for political and social relations on the ground, and put together can give unparalleled access to the practicalities of rule in centre and locality. Using them to illuminate Charlemagne's reign, when the Frankish empire grew to encompass most of Western Europe, will allow us to analyse the creation, expansion and maintaining of local political ties in a wide-ranging yet geographically sensitive manner. Although much used in regional contexts, they have never been analysed or even compiled systematically over the whole empire.\n\nThis work is particularly crucial for the reign of Charlemagne, because it saw rapid expansion into such a large number of new territories, and because it was also characterised by the knitting of stronger ties between centre and locality. Charters offer the best chance to trace these changes on the ground in greater depth, by integrating the central and the local. If Charlemagne was indeed the Father of Europe (and the belief that he was certainly underpins much of the current interest in him among the wider public), it is important to see in detail how ‘his’ Europe was constituted, and the impact his rule had on these disparate territories.\n\nWe will use this material to address a number of fundamental research questions much more systematically than has so far been possible:\n\n Elites and political relationships. Who was included in the running of the empire, and who benefited from it? How far were local elites integrated within wider imperial networks, and did their make-up change during this period of conquest and expansion? How were networks of political friendship managed, and what role did land transactions play in this? How much interaction was there between centre and locality?\n Economic and social foundations. How did lords organise their property, and what were the material underpinnings of local and supra-regional power? How far did regional differences in social and economic structures affect strategies of political control? How different were the fates of newly conquered areas – and why? How much difference was there, and of what kind, between ‘marginal’ regions and Frankish heartlands?\n Religious institutions. What did churches and monasteries contribute to the 'Frankicisation' of newly conquered areas? How much of a network did they form? How much did new endowments change local power relationships?\n Archival strategies and the written word. Who were the scribes who wrote our documents? What were their affiliations and level of professionalisation? How many documents was each of them involved in drafting over what period of time? What was the extent of their area of activity? Where were documents issued and witnessed? Where do most documents survive, and in what ways could this have distorted our sense of the overall picture?",
