            "abstractNote": "An inverted, or flipped, classroom, where content delivery includes video lectures watched outside of the classroom, is a method that can free classroom time for learner-centered activities such as active and problem-based learning. This study compared the effectiveness of an inverted classroom to a traditional classroom in three areas: 1) content coverage; 2) student performance on traditional quizzes and exam problems; and 3) student observations and perception of the inverted classroom format. A control-treatment experiment comparing an inverted classroom to a traditional lecture-style format was used. The results show that: 1) the inverted classroom allowed the instructor to cover more material; 2) students participating in the inverted classroom performed as well or better on comparable quiz and exam questions and on open-ended design problems; and 3) while students initially struggled with the new format, they adapted quickly and found the inverted classroom format to be satisfactory and effective.",

The course has been inverted,or “flipped”, in the sense that content and material is delivered to students for self-study in advance of lectures, via a combination of home-grown electronic course materials, textbook reading and external web resources. Subsequent lectures focus on\nproblems students are still having after self-study of the material, which have been self-reported by them as part of a weekly reading quiz assignment. Lectures are transformed from sessions for transmission or initial presentation of information, to guided discussion sessions, with a particular focus on peer instruction techniques\nand discussion, facilitated by\nextensive use of clicker questions. We present details of student engagement with pre-class reading and quiz tasks, comment on student perceptions of this different instructional format, and present data that shows evidence\nfor high quality learning on the course.",

            "abstractNote": "Recent evidence has shown that a mismatch between an instructor's teaching style  and a student's learning style can result in the student learning less and being less interested in the subject matter (Borg  and  Shapiro  1996;  Ziegert forth-coming).This finding implies that either \neducational administrators should strive to ensure agood match between the instructor's teaching style and the students' learning styles (a difficult task) or that concerned instructors should use a port-folio of teaching styles so as to appeal to a variety of student learning types.Unfortunately, a majority of \nintroductory economics courses are taught using only one teaching style-the traditional lecture format \n(Becker and Watts 1995).The ability of instructors to vary teaching styles inintroductory economics courses is seemingly limited by time constraints. If an instructor wanted to lecture for those students who learn best via lecturing, conduct experiments for the experiential learners,give group assignments \nfor the collaborative and cooperative learners,and oversee self-directed study for the independent learners,then he would need to increase student contact time fourfold.However, both the proliferation of students' access to multimedia and the advances in ease of multimedia development for faculty \nhave created an environment where these layers of learning can be integrated without in ordinately increasing  contact  time  or  sacrificing course  coverage.We  outline a strategy for teachingthat appeals to a broad range of learning styles without violating the constraints typically faced by instructors at most institutions.In addition,we present student and faculty perceptions of such a course.",

            "abstractNote": "Educational practice and the concept of `active learning' have had a significant impact on engineering education. Challenging students with questions and problem-solving activities to learn course material is what we do in engineering courses. However, how do we continue to cover the amount of material we need to cover and still open up class time to include the active learning strategies so necessary in engineering? This paper describes the design and implementation of an instructional strategy called `the classroom flip' or inverted classroom that was put into practice in an industrial engineering course.             "abstractNote": "The shift to a global economy, the move to lean management structures, and the need to serve an increasingly diverse learning community requires a transformative curriculum that not only recognizes alternative modes of intellectual inquiry but also helps students develop the complex thinking skills required to help industries be successful in today's global market place. While this is the promise of higher education, a substantial body of research indicates that cognitive growth remains elusive for most universities and for most disciplines, including engineering. In this paper, we discuss a framework for facilitating open ended problem solving through the use of an inverted classroom. A basic premise of the inverted classroom model is that richer open-ended problem solving experiences can be conducted within the classroom environment. Required readings and preparatory work through online interactive materials provide one opportunity for intellectual diversity and allow lectures to be replaced with more engaged pedagogies that require problems to be viewed from multiple perspectives. An example format and preliminary data for a course in cost estimating is presented.",

In an inverted classroom, typical in-class lecture time is replaced with laboratory and in-class activities. Outside of class, lectures are delivered over some other medium such as video on-demand. As such, learning activities, which typically are done outside of class, are done in-class in the presence of the instructor. Passive activities, such as listening to lectures, are performed outside of class. In this paper, we describe the use of podcasting in an inverted classroom environment with the explicit goal of reclaiming lecture time for in-class laboratories and learning activities. This Work-in- Progress paper focuses primarily upon the description of the approach being piloted, technologies being utilized, and the characteristics of the pilot course.",

            "abstractNote": "Motivated by other recent work, we developed, implemented, and began assessment of an Inverted Classroom model for Engineering Statics at UPRM. The model consists of (1) a set of pre-Lecture Modules and Exercises, delivered online; (2) a Lecture that responds to the students' experience in the preLecture activities, and (3) a Problem-Solving Session after each Lecture. Assessment results from a student survey and an administration of the Concept Assessment Tool for Statics (CATS) were generally positive. The class format, assessment methods, and assessment results are described. A discussion is also provided to indicate how the Inverted model might be implemented for use to unify the delivery of Statics at UPRM.",

            "abstractNote": "Motivated by other recent work, we developed, implemented, and began assessment of an Inverted Classroom model for Engineering Statics at UPRM. The model consists of (1) a set of pre-Lecture Modules and Exercises, delivered online; (2) a Lecture that responds to the students' experience in the preLecture activities, and (3) a Problem-Solving Session after each Lecture. Assessment results from a student survey and an administration of the Concept Assessment Tool for Statics (CATS) were generally positive. The class format, assessment methods, and assessment results are described. A discussion is also provided to indicate how the Inverted model might be implemented for use to unify the delivery of Statics at UPRM.",
