Up until now, however, attempts to map their distribution through space and time have been limited. In this paper we present preliminary results of an investigation of diachronic changes in the frequency of this trait on archaeological sites in France and England. This study reveals that this trait is concentrated through space and over time. In Britain, it seems to be much more common on Roman sites, but then declines in frequency until the early medieval period; by the late medieval period the frequency of this character increases significantly again. In France, the proportion seem to increase from the Iron Age until the first century AD. Explanation of these observations need much more data, but we speculate that the higher proportion in Roman times may reflect the introduction of new (larger) stock following the Roman occupation which carried this character in higher frequencies. This would imply that the character is inherited (recessive) and that its subsequent decline is a consequence of outbreeding. Details are given of the tagging systems, date o.f birth, intervals of visits, practical difjrculties, accuracy\nand grouping o.f stages. Figures show results for incisor eruption, and eruption and wear for dp4, P4 and the molar\nteeth. Overall results are summarized using Payne' s mandible stages, sub-divided using wear on the most recentlyerupted\ntooth. Results from different breeds show a general similarity for all sheep, with Blackfaces similar to the\ntraditional breeds, but some Soays erupting late. D(fferences between sheep and goats are seen in dp4 wear and the\norder of eruption of P4 and M3. Relative wear on adjacent teeth is shown as a means of studying wear-rate, and\nhence adjusting age-estimates for mandible stages which depend on wear.
