"abstractNote": "In the 1990s, a core curriculum for GIScience was developed to provide a lighthouse for the field. Given massive developments in the field, our goal is to lead the GIScience community in creating a modern and open-source curriculum for today’s GIScientist, through a project titled “The Guide to the Geographic Approach.” Here, we outline resources generated from the first phase of the project. It includes a list of modern Geographic Information Science (GIS) competencies, open modules organized around GIS workflows and applications, and supporting instructor materials. The approach to modern GIScience curriculum development and delivery is motivated by a shared understanding that materials should be co-developed by the community of GIScientists, be open source, center ethics, be distinguishable from data science through learning focused on spatial applications and workflows and build practical skills through hands-on activities using the latest technology. With the aim of providing content that addresses a set of modern GIScience competencies, we introduce the first phase of curriculum materials. Using an example module, we describe curricular components of each module and outline how materials can be used, as a complete curriculum or in their component parts.",

"abstractNote": "Whether or not a map can be ‘right' or ‘wrong', each maintains an aura of authority and correctness which reinforces or challenges a reader's perspective of the truth. Each map is a product of its maker, its reader, and multiple competing, and constraining contexts. Maps offer an idiosyncratic version of the truth with pre-existing perspectives and personal bias impacting every aspect of the communication process. In identifying maps that seek to propagate mis- or disinformation, some researchers argue a set of ‘cartographic ethics’ might function as a standard against which cartographers and mapmakers could be held accountable. This paper critiques cartographic ethics through the lens of truthfulness. If there is no single right or wrong truth, only competing perspectives, are cartographic ethics even practicable? And how might ethical codes be counter-productive? We offer some ideas on how we might go beyond our own internal discussions to generate practical ways of helping people to make better, perhaps more ethical maps.",

"abstractNote": "A conversation with a graphics reporter for a widely circulated American newspaper revealed the unique nature of the role, work, and ethics of graphics reporting. Operating under intense deadlines, graphics reporters must carefully balance the newsroom’s need for speed and pressure for performance with the cartographer’s meticulous attention to detail and iterative mapmaking process. Collaboration between the news reporter, graphics reporter, graphics editor, and, ultimately, the reader, can both facilitate and hinder the graphics report’s work. Knowing that many people, some with the power to make decisions with serious consequences, will read their maps, graphics reporters operate under pressures that, while not unknown to other mapmakers, do not affect them as frequently. Guiding their decisions and actions in this high-stakes, high-pressure environment are the ethics of both journalism and cartography, which don’t always converge.",

"abstractNote": "The selection of an appropriate spatial scale for aggregating unmarked point patterns is crucial yet challenging, especially when the goal is to remain agnostic to the specific analysis to be performed. Ramos (2021, 2025) proposed a framework based on balancing internal uniformity and local robustness to error, but its reliance on parametric assumptions and arbitrary transformations may restrict its generalizability. In this paper, we reinterpret the second metric as informational richness: a scale's ability to reveal diverse local patterns through variation in cell counts. We propose a distribution-free, entropy-based metric to quantify this concept, along with an adaptive sampling strategy grounded in stochastic geometry, and a Pareto frontier approach for illuminating trade-offs. Our method supports robust and generalizable spatial scale selection across a wide range of applications, while remaining agnostic to downstream analysis goals.",

"abstractNote": "Expanding irrigation is frequently promoted as a solution to undernutrition and food insecurity by increasing agricultural output, creating jobs, and raising incomes. However, its effects on children's diets and water supplies have not been thoroughly examined on a global scale. A study of 26 low- and middle-income countries reveals a clear, positive correlation between irrigation expansion and increased dietary diversity in children. However, in water-rich regions, irrigation expansion tends to be directed towards producing export-oriented cash crops, resulting in only minor local nutritional benefits for children. Conversely, the most significant dietary improvements for children are observed in water-stressed areas, where renewable water resources are insufficient to support irrigation sustainably. This highlights a conflict between achieving SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), emphasizing the need for nutrition-sensitive irrigation policies that balance nutritional objectives with long-term water sustainability.",

"abstractNote": "Irrigation expansion has been promoted as a way to improve global nutrition and health by increasing food production and income. However, its impact on the health and nutrition of local communities is unclear and might vary substantially across contexts, depending on who reaps the benefits and how. Here we combine georeferenced survey data from 9,144 rural communities (70,817 households) across 26 global south countries with data on global patterns of irrigation infrastructure changes to examine linkages between irrigation expansion and local changes in child diet diversity—a key indicator of micronutrient intake and development. We found a positive link between irrigation and child diet diversity, with substantial regional differences. Irrigation benefits were concentrated in regions without sufficient water resources to support it, suggesting trade-offs between dietary improvements and water stress. By contrast, irrigated areas with sufficient water tend to produce higher fractions of cash crops and export-oriented food items, with weaker associations to improved local diets. These findings suggest that while irrigation access is associated with overall improvements of child diet diversity in rural communities, water stress conditions can influence these outcomes. Nutrition-sensitive strategies thus need to be considered as an essential component of sustainable irrigation planning in the future.",

Yet despite the key role that croplands play in global land use and Earth systems, there remains little understanding of how spatial patterns of global crop cultivation have recently evolved and which crops have contributed most to these changes. Here we construct a new data library of subnational crop-specific irrigated and rainfed harvested area statistics and combine it with global gridded land cover products to develop a global gridded (5-arcminute) irrigated and rainfed cropped area (MIRCA-OS) dataset for the years 2000 to 2015 for 23 crop classes. These global data products support critical insights into the spatially detailed patterns of irrigated and rainfed cropland change since the start of the century and provide an improved foundation for a wide array of global assessments spanning agriculture, water resource management, land use change, climate impact, and sustainable development.",

"abstractNote": "The urgency to address ecosystem loss is paramount, as both land use change and climate change will continue to rapidly alter and degrade natural ecosystems and reduce the many services they provide. To support conservation actions that mitigate impacts from these dual threats, we have developed potential World Terrestrial Ecosystem (WTE) distributions for 2050 following IPCC best practice guidelines. This projection of ecosystem distributions builds on the previously released 2015 WTEs, a snapshot of the distribution and conservation status of 431 terrestrial ecosystem types defined as distinct combinations of 18 global climate regions, 4 global landform classes, and 8 global vegetation/land cover classes. Extending that work herein, we modeled the potential 2050 WTE distributions based on projections of five CMIP6 general circulation models (GCMs) and one global land cover change model, determined for three shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) scenarios. The climate region modeling included projections for 2050 for both mean annual temperature and mean annual aridity. Model agreement for changes to WTEs was generally high, particularly for temperature projections. Widespread changes in ecosystem classes due to shifts in climate settings and/or land cover between 2015 and 2050 were projected, with both the magnitude and specific geography of projected change largely governed by the SSP scenario. For the three SSP scenarios (sustainable development, regional rivalry, and fossil-fueled development), geographic changes in climate setting (temperature, aridity, or both) and/or changes in vegetation/land cover are projected for 29 %, 36 %, and 39 % of Earth’s terrestrial surface, respectively. These changes occur in areas where 31 %, 36 %, and 41 % of the global population lives. Projected changes in ecosystem distributions related to temperature change are approximately an order of magnitude greater than for aridity change. By offering insight into potential ecosystem changes, this new resource is intended to facilitate conservation planning and priority setting aimed at improved conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services.",

"abstractNote": "The current United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030; hereafter, the Decade) offers a unique opportunity and framework to globally advance ocean science and policy. Achieving meaningful progress within the Decade requires collaboration and coordination across Decade Actions (Programs, Projects, and Centres). This coordination is particularly important for the deep ocean, which remains critically under-sampled compared to other ecosystems. Despite the limited sampling, the deep ocean accounts for over 95% of Earth's habitable space, plays a crucial role in regulating the carbon cycle and global temperatures, and supports diverse ecosystems. To collectively advance deep-ocean science, we gathered representatives from 20 Decade Actions that focus at least partially on the deep ocean. We identified five broad themes that aim to advance deep-ocean science in alignment with the Decade's overarching 10 Challenges: natural capital and the blue economy, biodiversity, deep-ocean observing, best practices in data sharing, and capacity building. Within each theme, we propose concrete objectives (termed Cohesive Asks) and milestones (Targets) for the deep-ocean community. Developing these Cohesive Asks and Targets reflects a commitment to better coordination across deep-ocean Decade Actions. We aim to build bridges across deep-ocean disciplines, which encompass natural science, ocean observing, policy, and capacity development.",

"abstractNote": "Predicting the trajectory of geographical events, such as wildfire spread, presents a formidable task due to the dynamic associations among influential biophysical factors. Geo-events like wildfires frequently display short and long-range spatial and temporal correlations. Short-range effects are the direct contact and near-contact spread of the fire front. Long-range effects are represented by processes such as spotting, where firebrands carried by the wind ignite fires distant from the flaming front, altering the shape and speed of an advancing fire front. This study addresses these modeling challenges by clearly defining and analyzing the scale-dependent spatiotemporal dynamics that influence wildfire spread, focusing on the interplay between biophysical factors and fire behavior. We propose two unique attention-based spatiotemporal models using Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (ConvLSTM) networks. These models are designed to learn and capture a range of local to global and short and long-range spatiotemporal correlations. The proposed models were tested on two datasets: a high-resolution wildfire spread dataset produced with a semi-empirical percolation model and a satellite observed wildfire spread data in California 2012–2021. Results indicate that attention-based models accurately predict fire front movements that are consistent with known wildfire spread-biophysical dynamics. Our research suggests there is considerable potential for attention mechanisms to capture the spatiotemporal behavior of wildfire spread, with model transferability, that can guide rapid deployment of wildfire management operations. We also highlight directions for future studies that focus on how the self-attention mechanism could enhance model performance for a range of geospatial applications.",

"abstractNote": "Social issues, AI, and climate change are just a few of the disruptive focuses impacting science. The field of GIScience is well positioned to respond to accelerating disruptions due to the interdisciplinary nature of the field and the ability of GIScience approaches to be used in support of decision-making. This manuscript aims to start a conversation that will establish a research agenda for GIScience in an age of disruptions. We outline three guiding principles: (1) focusing on the relevance and real-world impact of research, (2) adopting systems-based thinking and contextual approaches and (3) emphasizing inclusive practices. We then outline prioritized research areas organized by what topics are important focal areas (Data and Infrastructure, Artificial Intelligence, and Causality and Generalizability), and what approaches to science we should be attentive to (Impactful Open Science, Collaborative and Convergent Science, and through Diverse Participation and Partnerships). We conclude with a call to increase impact by balancing slow science with practical and policy-oriented research. We also recognize that while broad adoption of spatial approaches is a signal of GIScience’s success, we should continue to work together to advance core knowledge centered on spatial thinking and approaches.",

"abstractNote": "In this paper, we present a novel approach for segmenting planar regions in Digital Surface Models (DSMs) by adapting the Segment Anything Model (SAM), an open-source framework. Our approach specifically tailors SAM to recognize planar regions within given building footprints, employing the Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) technique. This adaptation benefits from a detailed and realistic synthetic dataset, coupled with a novel labeling strategy for planar regions in our ground truth, enhancing the model’s effectiveness and reproducibility. Unlike traditional plane detection techniques, our method consistently and accurately identifies equivalent planar regions across identical DSM inputs. Following the segmentation phase, we introduced a novel plane fitting algorithm to determine the parameters for each planar region. This enables us to refine the edges of these areas and utilize the resulting plane equations to construct precise, watertight 3D models of buildings. Despite its training on synthetic data, our model exhibits remarkable performance on both synthetic and real-world datasets, exemplified by its application to the Zurich dataset.",

"abstractNote": "This study presents a new boundary regularization algorithm for linearizing closed boundaries defined as adjacent vertices. By minimizing a novel cost function consisting of a L 2 -norm data fidelity term and non-differentiable L 0 -norm boundary regularization term, given noisy boundary is linearized. Data fidelity term enforces similarity to the given boundary while L 0 -norm enforces linearized boundary with sharp corners. Proposed cost function is made differentiable via quadratic approximation, leading to a linear system characterized by a sparse symmetric positive definite matrix. Obtained linear system is efficiently solved using an iterative solver. Finally, applicability of the method is demonstrated with the tests on real-world and synthetic data sets. In addition to its standalone application, owing to its differentiability, the proposed method can also serve as a layer within deep neural networks, enabling the creation of loss functions tailored specifically for vector outputs which is useful in image and point cloud analysis.",

"abstractNote": "Digital Twins of the Ocean (DTO) are a rapidly emerging topic that has attracted significant interest from scientists in recent years. The initiative, strongly driven by the EU, aims to create a digital replica of the ocean to better understand and manage marine environments. The Iliad project, funded under the EU Green Deal call, is developing a framework to support multiple interoperable DTO using a federated systems-of-systems approach across various fields of applications and ocean areas, called pilots. This paper presents the results of a Water Quality DTO pilot located in the Trondheim fjord in Norway. This paper details the building blocks of DTO, specific to this environmental monitoring pilot. A crucial aspect of any DTO is data, which can be sourced internally, externally, or through a hybrid approach utilizing both. To realistically twin ocean processes, the Water Quality pilot acquires data from both surface and benthic observatories, as well as from mobile sensor platforms for on-demand data collection. Data ingested into an InfluxDB are made available to users via an API or an interface for interacting with the DTO and setting up alerts or events to support ’what-if’ scenarios. Grafana, an interactive visualization application, is used to visualize and interact with not only time-series data but also more complex data such as video streams, maps, and embedded applications. An additional visualization approach leverages game technology based on Unity and Cesium, utilizing their advanced rendering capabilities and physical computations to integrate and dynamically render real-time data from the pilot and diverse sources. This paper includes two case studies that illustrate the use of particle sensors to detect microplastics and monitor algae blooms in the fjord. Numerical models for particle fate and transport, OpenDrift and DREAM, are used to forecast the evolution of these events, simulating the distribution of observed plankton and microplastics during the forecasting period.",

"abstractNote": "We present the novel grammar language Recomp for the procedural modeling of architecture. In grammar-based approaches, the procedural refinement process is based on shape subdivisions. This process of decomposition results in disconnected subparts, which not only restricts the geometric expressiveness but also limits the control over an appropriate shape granularity needed to coordinate design decisions. Recomp overcomes these limitations by extending grammar languages with the recomposition ability. Fundamental is the concept of rule inlining, allowing for the topological recomposition of edited subparts by collapsing a shape subtree into one single shape on which derivation can continue. This is completed with a versatile geometry tagging system, allowing authors to compile and transport context information at any level of detail and gain full control over the geometry independent of the structure of the shape tree. Through various examples, we demonstrate the power of Recomp in procedural layout and mass modeling, as well as its capabilities in facilitating context-sensitive design.",
