These included wild cultivated einkorn and emmer during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic A (PPNA) and ungulates during the PPNB. However, large osteoarchaeological samples from Klimonas and Shillourokambos sites, revealed an interesting diversity in the processes. Cattle and sheep were introduced as early domesticates, c. 8500 and 7900 BCE respectively, and raised throughout the late 9th and the 8th millennia. However, shortly after their introduction, the domestic goats went feral and became game, before being domesticated again 8-10 centuries later. Even more intriguing is the history of suids. The wild boar was introduced long before the PPN and rapidly evolved into an endemic insular sub-species (Sus scrofa circeus). From 10,200 to 8500 BCE, it was the only large game on the Cyprus island. Then, from 8500 to 7500 BCE, Sus s. circeus was domesticated, giving rise to all subsequent Neolithic pigs, without any visible introduction of continental domestic pigs. This diversity of processes highlights the complexity of dispersal of domesticates at the beginning of the Neolithic period, involving transfer and acclimatisation components as well as possible local domestications. This is because birch tar production per se was assumed to require a cognitively demanding setup, in which birch bark is heated in anaerobic conditions, a setup whose inherent complexity was thought to require modern levels of cognition and cultural transmission. Here we demonstrate that recognizable amounts of birch tar were likely a relatively frequent byproduct of burning birch bark (a natural tinder) under common, i.e., aerobic, conditions. We show that when birch bark burns close to a vertical to subvertical hard surface, such as an adjacent stone, birch tar is naturally deposited and can be easily scraped off the surface. The burning of birch bark near suitable surfaces provides useable quantities of birch tar in a single work session (3 h; including birch bark procurement). Chemical analysis of the resulting tar showed typical markers present in archaeological tar. Mechanical tests verify the tar’s suitability for hafting and for hafted tools use. Given that similarly sized stones as in our experiment are frequently found in archaeological contexts associated with Neanderthals, the cognitively undemanding connection between burning birch bark and the production of birch tar would have been readily discoverable multiple times. While lipid residue analysis is frequently employed to determine their composition, this technique favours the identification of animal products. In this study, we present a combined analytical approach, including high resolution microscopic analysis (Digital Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy) together with molecular and isotopic analysis of lipids (GC-MS and GC-C-IRMS) and bulk isotope analysis (EA-IRMS) to further understand the composition of foodcrusts. Eighty-five pottery vessels with foodcrusts were analysed from 13 archaeological sites dating from the 6th to the 3rd millennium BC, of which 58 have allowed for identification of plant tissues, such as wild grasses and legumes, fruits, and the roots, tubers, leaves and stems of herbaceous plants. The results demonstrate that the choice of plant foods was remarkably selective, with hunter-gatherers favouring certain plant species and even their parts over others and combining these with specific animal ingredients. The results also reveal that our knowledge of plant processing in pottery is likely to be grossly under-represented by relying on lipid residue analysis alone.", "publicationTitle": "PLOS ONE", The simulations test the effect of shelf‐wide isostatic changes of sea level by incorporating results from two different crustal rebound models, and the effect of the ocean‐tide variability by setting open boundary values either fixed to the present state or variable according to the results of a global paleotidal model. The use of the different crustal rebound models does not affect the overall changes in tidal patterns, but the timing of the changes is sensitive to the local isostatic effects that differ between the models. The incorporation of ocean‐tide changes greatly augments the amplitude of tides and tidal currents in the Celtic and Malin seas before 10 ka BP, and has a large impact on the distribution of seasonally stratified conditions, magnitude of peak bed stress vectors and tidal dissipation in the shelf seas. The predictions on seasonal stratification are supported by well‐dated evidence on tidal mixing front migration in the Celtic Sea. Additional experiments using the global model suggest that the variability of offshore tides has been caused mainly by changes of eustatic sea level and ice‐sheet extent. The 7.3ka cal BP Kikai-Akahoya (K-Ah) ‘super-eruption’ in south-western Japan was among the largest volcanic events of the Holocene. Here, the authors deploy a multi-proxy approach to examine how K-Ah devastated Tanegashima Island. While local Jōmon populations were annihilated, surrounding communities survived and eventually returned, adjusting their subsistence base to survive in the damaged environment. The usual procedure involves imaging tooth wear surfaces by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Surfaces are characterized quantitatively by measurement of individual wear features (pits and scratches) on photomicrographs. Recent studies of living animals have shown associations between diets on one hand and patterns of dental microwear on the other. Furthermore, patterns on fossil teeth have been used to reconstruct diets in extinct forms. However, conventional methods for microwear analysis are limited. Scanning electron microscopy does not provide a true representation of these surfaces in three dimensions, and identification and measurement of individual features is time consuming, subjective, and subject to high interobserver error. This paper describes a new approach to the analysis of dental microwear using tandem scanning confocal microscopy and scale-sensitive fractal analyses. The instrument used in this study provides three-dimensional coordinates representing surfaces at a resolution equivalent to that employed by most SEM microwear studies. Fractal analyses offer objective, repeatable, quantitative characterization of surfaces. This approach eliminates major sources of error and increases power to resolve differences between species. The Sibudu unifacial and bifacial points, from post-Howiesons Poort assemblages dated between 60 and 37 ka, have been previously identified as spear points; their diagnosis is strongly supported by both morphometric and impact fracture analyses. Our paper shows: a) that the Rose Cottage unifacial points and the Mousterian points from Bouheben can also be interpreted as hand-delivered spear tips; b) that the range of throwing spears has been underestimated, and c) that there is no reason to restrict interpretation of early hunting behaviour to placing the prey in a disadvantaged position and killing at close quarters. We review recent research on the appearance of long-range projectile technology in Africa and in Europe and provide support to statements by John Shea that strong evidence of the use of spearthrower
