A number of the world's leading universities are making their courses freely available via the likes of Coursera and edX. The University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland have recently announced that they will be offering free and open MOOC courses next year.\n1 MOOCs offer real educational opportunities for all. MOOCs are not original in adopting the model of open education. The likes of MIT and Open University have been leaders in this field for many years and the OER University (of which USQ_is a member) is another fine example of open education. However, it is the elite university brands, with quality course content, coupled with an easy to use online learning environment, which will make MOOCs extremely attractive.\n4. Learning, training and development professionals can learn a lot from signing up to a MOOC as part of their professional development. In a recent conversation on ABC Radio National's Life Matters, two academics extolled the virtues of taking a MOOC course outside of their discipline, believing that it gave them new insights into being both a student and a lifelong learner. Signing up for a MOOC is a great opportunity for professional development. The actual subject studied is less important than the opportunity to be a learner again. There is also a chance to see how accessible courses are put together in this new learning environment.\nMOOCs: neither the death of the university nor a panacea for learning.
