"abstractNote": "New US government requirements state that federally funded grants and school programs must prove that they are based on scientifically proved improvements in teaching and learning. All new grants must show they are based on scientifically sound research to be funded, and budgets to schools must likewise show that they are based on scientifically sound research. However, the movement in education over the past several years has been toward qualitative rather than quantitative measures. The new legislation comes at a time when researchers are ill trained to measure results or even to frame questions in an empirical way, and when school administrators and teachers are no longer remember or were never trained to prove statistically that their programs are effective.Experimental Methods for Evaluating Educational Interventions is a tutorial on what it means to frame a question in an empirical manner, how one needs to test that a method works, what statistics one uses to measure effectiveness, and how to document these findings in a way so as to be compliant with new empirically based requirements. The book is simplistic enough to be accessible to those teaching and administrative educational professionals long out of schooling, but comprehensive and sophisticated enough to be of use to researchers who know experimental design and statistics but don't know how to use what they know to write acceptable grant proposals or to get governmental funding for their programs. * Provides an overview to interpreting empirical data in education* Reviews data analysis techniques: use and interpretation* Discusses research on learning, instruction, and curriculum* Explores importance of showing progress as well as cause and effect* Identifies obstacles to applying research into practice*Examines policy development for states, nations, and countries",

"note": "<p>Defining design research</p>\n<p>These design efforts include design of curriculum, software, professional development, school organizations, and school–community collaborations. This new wave of research, characterized by iterative design and formative research in complex real world settings, has been variously called design experiments (Brown, 1992; Collins, 1992), design research (Cobb, 2001), and development research (Richey &amp; Nelson, 1996; van den Akker, 1999). These new efforts pose important challenges for researchers, not because design is entirely new to educational research, but because the relationship between the design and the research is changing, and because the complexity of the designs and their settings present challenges for traditional research methodologies.<br />The conventional role of design in educational research has been as a strategyfor testing theories. Cobb (2001) described this theory testing as a four-step sequence:<br />1. The development of a theory.<br />2. The derivation of principles for design from the theory.<br />3. The translation of the principles into concrete designs.<br />4. The assessment of the designs to test whether they work as anticipated.</p>\n<p>In the recent literature on design experiments and design research, researchers present a different picture of the role of design in their research (Brown, 1992;<br />Kelly &amp; Lesh, 2000; Richey &amp; Nelson, 1996; van den Akker, 1999). They describe a process in which design plays a critical role in the development of theories, not<br />just their evaluation. In this theory development approach, the design researchers begin with a set of hypotheses and principles that they use to guide a design process. Importantly, these hypotheses and principles are not detailed enough to determine every design decision.</p>\n<p>In this way, the design researchers proceed through iterative cycles of design and implementation, using<br />each implementation as an opportunity to collect data to inform subsequent design.<br />Through a parallel and retrospective process of reflection upon the design and its outcomes, the design researchers elaborate upon their initial hypotheses and principles, refining, adding, and discarding—gradually knitting together a coherent<br />theory that reflects their understanding of the design experience. Confrey and Lachance (2000) described this process in the following way: “At points in its evo-lution, the conjecture should feel more like a grand scheme beginning to emergefrom many, previously disparate pieces” (p. 235).</p>",

In addition, participants are not “subjects” assigned to treatments but instead are treated as co-participants in both the design and even the analysis. Besides showing that activity theory transforms how research should proceed regarding language, language learning, and literacy in particular, the authors demonstrate how it is a theory for praxis, thereby offering the potential to overcome some of the most profound problems that have plagued both educational theorizing and practice.",

"abstractNote": "Intended for designers and researchers, Context and Consciousness brings together 13contributions that apply activity theory to problems of human-computer interaction.Understanding howpeople actually use computers in their everyday lives is essential to good design and evaluation. This insight necessitates a move out of the laboratory and into the field. The research described inContext and Consciousness presents activity theory as a means of structuring and guiding fieldstudies of human-computer interaction, from practical design to theoretical development. Activitytheory is a psychological theory with a naturalistic emphasis, with roots going back to the 1920s inthe Soviet Union. It provides a hierarchical framework for describing activity and a set ofperspectives on practice. Activity theory has been fruitfully applied in many areas of human need, including problems of mentally and physically handicapped children, educational testing, curriculumdesign, and ergonomics. There is growing interest in applying activity theory to problems of human-computer interaction, and an international community of researchers is contributing to theeffort.Contributors : Rachel Bellamy. "abstractNote": "This book presents a fresh view of action research as a methodology uniquely suited to researching the processes of innovation and change. Drawing on twenty-five years’ experience of leading or facilitating action research projects, Bridget Somekh argues that action research can be a powerful systematic intervention, which goes beyond describing, analyzing and theorizing practices to reconstruct and transform those practices. The book examines action research into change in a range of educational settings, such as schools and classrooms, university departments, and a national evaluation of technology in schools. The opening chapter presents eight methodological principles and discusses key methodological issues. The focus then turns to action research in broader contexts such as ‘southern’ countries, health, business and management, and community development. Each chapter thereafter takes a specific research project as its starting point and critically reviews its design, relationships, knowledge outcomes, political engagement and impact. Action Researchis important reading for postgraduate students and practitioner researchers in education, health and management, as well as those in government agencies and charities who wish to research and evaluate change and development initiatives. It is also valuable for pre-service and in-service training of professionals such as teachers, nurses and managers.",
