"abstractNote": "In much of the theoretical literature on global broadcast algorithms for wireless networks, issues of message dissemination are considered together with issues of contention management. This combination leads to complicated algorithms and analysis, and makes it difficult to extend the work to more difficult communication problems. In this paper, we present results aimed at simplifying such algorithms and analysis by decomposing the treatment into two levels, using abstract “MAC layer” specifications to encapsulate contention management. We use two different abstract MAC layers: the basic layer of [1,2] and a new probabilistic layer. We first present a typical randomized contention-management algorithm for a standard graph-based radio network model and show that it implements both abstract MAC layers. Then we combine this algorithm with greedy algorithms for single-message and multi-message global broadcast and analyze the combinations, using both abstract MAC layers as intermediate layers. Using the basic MAC layer, we prove a bound of O D log n ϵ log ( Δ ) for the time to deliver a single message everywhere with probability 1 − ϵ, where D is the network diameter, n is the number of nodes, and Δ is the maximum node degree. Using the probabilistic layer, we prove a bound of O D + log n ϵ log ( Δ ) , which matches the best previously-known bound for single-message broadcast over the physical network model. For multi-message broadcast, we obtain bounds of O ( D + k Δ ) log n ϵ log ( Δ ) using the basic layer and O D + k Δ log n ϵ log ( Δ ) using the probabilistic layer, for the time to deliver a message everywhere in the presence of at most k concurrent messages.",

"abstractNote": "In recent years, the IEEE 802.11 wireless network family has become one of the most important set of standards in the wireless communications industry. IEEE 802.11 compliant devices are inexpensive and easier to configure and deploy than other wireless technologies. In an IEEE 802.11 wireless network, wireless terminals can move freely. As a result, when the wireless terminal moves away from its current access point, it must switch to another access point to maintain the active connection. This is known as the MAC layer handoff process. MAC layer handoff latency should be minimized to support real-time applications and to provide mobile devices with seamless roaming in IEEE 802.11 wireless networks. This paper proposes a novel MAC layer handoff protocol over IEEE 802.11 wireless networks by introducing advertisement messages sent from other mobile nodes and from which wireless terminals are able to receive the information of access points in their neighborhood. A mobile node can try to associate with access points based on the prediction before starting the probe process. The experimental results demonstrate that our solution can reduce MAC layer handoff latency to meet the requirements of real-time applications.",

"abstractNote": "In recent years, Multi-hop Wireless Networks (MHWNs) have experienced an explosion of deployment due to the increasing demand for continuous connectivity regardless of the physical location. Internet predominant transport protocols, i.e. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), face performance degradation in MHWNs because of the high loss and link failure rates. Several solutions have been proposed which are based on network state estimation or use information from MAC layer (called metrics) in a cross-layer manner to better comprehend the network state. The first part of this thesis provides a survey and comprehensive definition of common metrics from Physical, MAC, Network and Transport layers and thus provides a multi-criteria and hierarchical classification. After that, the effectiveness in reflecting network information of MAC metrics is also investigated in a systematic way by simulating various network situations and measuring the MAC metrics. Thus, the good MAC metric for congestion control which is coupled with the network contention level and the medium induced losses will be found out. From the results of the effectiveness study, new rate control schemes for transport protocols are proposed which adapt efficiently the source bit rate depending on the network condition provided by some MAC metrics. Through an extensive set of simulations, the performance of the proposed rate control schemes in MHWNs is investigated thoroughly with several network situations.",

"abstractNote": "MAC layer misbehavior due to selfish or malicious reasons can significantly degrade the performance of mobile ad hoc networks. Currently, detection systems for handling selfish misbehavior has been proposed and studied. In this paper we study a new class of malicious misbehaviors that causes transmission timeout of MAC frames at either the transmitter side or the receiver side. A misbehaving node fully cooperates by forwarding packets for other nodes and completely adheres to the proper selection of backoff intervals; however, it maliciously forces the forwarding operation to fail in order to either disrupt the route discovery process or cause damage to the existing flows routed through itself. We design and implement a new detection and reaction system DREAM (a system for Detection and REAction to timeout mac layer Misbehavior) that identifies the malicious nodes through a set of monitoring and reaction procedures. Once a misbehaving node is detected, the system reacts, by adapting simple protocol parameters, to mitigate the negative effects. We describe the detection system and the different reaction procedures for different misbehaviors. We evaluate through network simulations the effectiveness of the system in detecting malicious nodes and improving the network performance.",

We focus on the impact of time-varying radio ranges and of multiple lanes of vehicles, varying in speed and in density. We assess the existence of a vehicle density threshold under which information propagates on average at the fastest vehicle speed and above which information propagates dramatically faster. We first prove that no such phase transition occurs if there is only one lane, regardless of the density of vehicles, when one takes into account real-time radio communication range variations at the MAC layer. We then prove that, on the other hand, a phase transition exists as soon as there are multiple lanes with different vehicle speeds and appropriate densities. We characterize conditions under which the phase transition occurs and we derive bounds on the corresponding threshold as a simple relationship between the vehicle density on the fastest lane and the sum of the vehicle densities on the other lanes. Our results intrinsically encompass a wide range of vehicular network scenarios, including one-way and two-way roads, as well as special cases such as road side units and/or parked cars being used as relays. We confirm our analytical results using simulations carried out in several environments (ONE and Maple).",
